Christmas Open

We’re not putting up much new content Christmas Day. Please use this post to put up your own, to wish each other good tidings, and to enjoy your fellow Liberalanders.  Christmas is the birth of Jesus, but it also transcends religion. It’s a time when we take pause, think about what’s important, and assume a spirit that is too often lacking the rest of the year. It’s a good time to reflect and to just enjoy the beauty of being.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. This is a time for love of family, friends and your animal babies, embrace the time and your loved ones, and forgive your “enemies”.

    A GOP XMAS

    ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
    everyone felt shitty, even the mouse!

    Dad at the whore house, Mom smoking grass,
    and I just settled down for a nice piece of ass.

    Then out on the lawn there rose such a clatter,
    I sprang from my piece to see what was the matter.

    He came down the chimney like a bat out of hell,
    I knew right away that fat f***er fell.

    then he filled all the stockings with pretzels and beer,

    He rose up the chimney with one hell of a fart,
    that son-of-a-bitch blew my chimney apart.

    He swore and he cursed as he flew out of sight,
    “Piss on you all and have one hell of a night.”

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
    Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
    With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

    The New York Post ran a piece today about a passenger being booted off a plane at La Guardia because he lost his shit when a flight attendant wished him a merry Christmas.

    It’s got everything you’d expect and is perfectly fitted to match the “war on Christmas” narrative being constantly put forth by the aggrieved right wing, so much so that I only wonder how long it will be before it is shown to be false.

    Most telling is that no one is identified by name and there are no statements from airport security or the airline.

    Have a look and see if you smell a tuna also.

      “Don’t say, ‘Merry Christmas!’ ” the man raged before lecturing the attendants and the pilot about their faux pas.

      that will get you tossed on any given day

      The man was waiting to board American Airlines Flight 1140 to Dallas

    Last Christmas add–

    Just saw the Chuck Jones animated “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and was pleasantly reminded of the remarkable Basso Profundo that was Thurl Ravenscroft, who memorably performed the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch” for the production.

    You’ll probably know him best as the voice of Tony the Tiger in innumerable Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes commercials (they’re Grrrr-reat!), but Ravenscroft was a prolific voiceover artist with decades of work behind him by that time.

    I had the privilege of meeting him by virtue of winding up next to him on a barstool at Nickodell’s, a little club on Melrose, back in the eighties, and recognized the voice almost immediately, it was that distinctive.

    We chatted for a bt, and he reminisced about his career for a while and I asked him what was the most fun thing he’d ever voiced and he laughed and said “the dog pound chorus in Lady and the Tramp, hands down.” He got to howl and yowl and bark, and he and the rest of his fellow “dogs” (“The Mellomen”) had a tough time doing a take without breaking into laughter.

    he was gracious Old Hollywood all the way; wore an ascot, even. You can listen to him backing up Peggy Lee in the Dog Pound Chorus here (Thurl’s the tall one with the ‘stache/ the bulldog):
