Ex-GOP Candidate For Gov Starts ‘Shooting Indiscriminately,’ Shoots Neighbor, Kills Horse

Posted by | August 9, 2014 20:38 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

A California man who campaigned for governor this year has been arrested in connection with the shooting of his neighbor and the shooting death of a horse Thursday afternoon, according to The Fresno Bee.

48-year-old Tye “Glenn” Champ was taken into custody around noon on Friday without incident, after a Tulare County sheriff’s deputy caught up to him on a traffic stop.

According to the Bee, Champ previously served a prison term for manslaughter, has several convictions for weapons offenses and is also a registered sex offender. But since then, Champ claimed to have “found the Lord.”

A “neighbor dispute” over work being done on a road led to the shooting, according to witnesses.  On Thursday afternoon, Champ first approached a 13-year-old boy.

“Champ was angry at the 13-year-old and slashed the tires on the ATV that the child was riding,” Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said. “The parents came to the scene and confronted Champ and that’s when the father was shot, then other witnesses — including the victim and the 13-year-old — ran away as more shots were being fired at them from Champ.”

A horse in a pasture was hit and killed. Mims said Champ was “shooting pretty indiscriminately … it’s fortunate no one else was hit.”

The Fresno Bee reports:

The 40-year-old father was shot in the stomach and underwent surgery at Community Regional Medical Center. He was in serious condition on Friday afternoon but his wounds are not life-threatening, Mims said.

Mims said, “There may have been prior disturbances over the road — I understand it was being retarred in the area — however, that’s no excuse for attempting to murder somebody.”

Champ then took off in a blue, four-door Volkswagen, but was arrested about 10:15 a.m. Friday, Mims said.

Champ was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, willful cruelty to a child, willful cruelty to an animal, and felon in possession of a gun. Bail was set at $500,000.

Raw Story notes that Champ came in fifth in the gubernatorial primary in June with over 76,000 votes.

Watch as he’s taken into custody:

See what happens in a state run by Democrats. An overcrowded prisons system now under US Justice Dept. control (ha ha) … that can’t keep obviously dangerous people like this and yet fills the jails and prisons beyond capacity with non-violent Drug Felons.

My sincere wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to the injured man, and condolences to our fallen equestrienne friend.

Why didn’t you or your GOP do any research on Champ’s 1-2 decades ago incarceration for his 1992, 1993 & 1998 convictions?

A: Repubs have nobody & that’s why they ran this ex-felon after Champ served more than a decade in Prison: Court records show that in 1992, he pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed firearm. In 1993, he was convicted of two counts of assault with intent to commit rape and as a result was placed on the state’s sex-offender registry.

In March 1998, he accepted a plea deal on a charge of loitering to solicit a prostitute; later that year, he pleaded no contest to a voluntary manslaughter charge after hitting a man with his vehicle, for which he was sentenced to 12 years in state prison, according to court records. http://www.governing.com/topics/elections/california-gop-gubernatorial-candidate-glenn-champ-Is-a-registered-sex-offender.html

Oh! Looks like I hit the left nerve. Since you answered your own ridiculous question … I’ll run it by my GOP at first chance, I stand by my statement, yet might better qualify it, “pro-Drug War Democrats.”

        • Obewon August 10th, 2014 at 04:32

The War on Drugs are Reagan & Nixon policies. What have repubs ever done for anybody but Big Oil Corporate welfare queen Billionaires & Privatized (CCA) Prisons? Zip!

You can disagree with clean renewable energy and social safety net Dem successes, but their progressive policies save lives, reduced record GOP Great Depressions and recessions, GOP deficits and all the GOP Iraq and other wars.

When was the last GOP success? A: Nixon’s resignation to save the presidency.

The War on Drugs are Reagan & Nixon policies.

            …and unabashedly supported by Democrats.

Actual, it was under Franklin Roosevelt when the first federal “anti-drug” agency, Federal Bureau of Narcotics, opened for business. And it’s been a riot and a rout ever since. And, of course you must know, it’s not really a war on drugs. Is it? If Democrats have not figured that out by now…

            • Obewon August 10th, 2014 at 05:10

Your single issue war on drugs is oversimplified to put it mildly…

I believe Progressives are attempting to end the “drug war”. It’s conservatives that fear all change that oppose these attempts…but are slowly losing: see Colorado and Washington.

                  • carowe August 10th, 2014 at 15:44

conservatives don’t so much fear the change as they want to protect their moneymaking interests in all those private prisons.

So, a convicted violent sex offender is able to get their hands on firearms and almost kills a man. This is the type of situation that just screams background checks. I do wish that the reporter had at least attempted to find out where someone with this criminal background obtained a firearm.

Am I surprised that the GOP ran a man like this? Why should I, they let Issa in.

    • Roy Austin Smith August 10th, 2014 at 16:33

Makes sense, background checks , which are illegal, do little good at all. Thugs will always get guns.

      • Naithom August 10th, 2014 at 20:44

Actually, background checks are not illegal. I refer you to Justice Scalia’s statements in the Heller decision:

“Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. [United States v.] Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.

        http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/07-290.ZO.html

As for them doing “little good”, I refer you to the Johns Hopkins study of the repeal of Missouri’s background check which found:

        1. Missouri’s 2007 repeal of its permit-to-purchase (PTP) handgun law contributed to a fourteen percent increase in Missouri’s murder rate through 2012 (updated from sixteen percent; first paragraph of press release).

        2. The law’s repeal was associated with an additional 49 to 68 murders per year in Missouri between 2008 and 2012 (updated from 55 to 63 additional murders per year; second paragraph of press release).

        3. The repeal of Missouri’s PTP law was associated with a twenty-five percent increase in firearm homicides rates. (updated from twenty-three percent; sixth paragraph of press release).

        http://www.jhsph.edu/news/news-releases/2014/repeal-of-missouris-background-law-associated-with-increase-in-states-murders.html

In 2010, about 99 percent of people who apply to buy a firearm are quickly cleared. But about 1 to 2 percent are denied, mainly because the records show that he or she has a felony indictment or conviction. The data also show that about 5 percent successfully appeal their denials.

        Applications: 6,037,394

        FBI denials: 72,659 (1.2 percent)

        Appeals 16,513 (22.7 percent)

Successful appeals 3,491 (4.77 percent of denials)

The main reason listed for a denial is a felony conviction or indictment. Here are some of the key reasons:

        Felony: 34,459 (47.4 percent)

        Fugitive: 13,862 (19.1 percent)

State law prohibition: 7,666 (10.6 percent)

        Drug use/addiction: 6,971 (9.6 percent)

        https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/bjs/grants/239272.pdf

So, in just one year, the background checks prevented over 70,000 felons, fugitives, drug addicts and other prohibitive individuals from obtaining a gun. That’s hardly, doing nothing at all. It stopped them and notified the authorities that they were attempting to obtain a firearm.

    • Shades August 10th, 2014 at 08:46

I’m only surprised he didn’t win.

    • BanditBasheert August 10th, 2014 at 12:38

Hey as far as I’m concerned, he deserves life in prison just for killing the horse. Animals shouldn’t be dragged into our fights.

    • Roy Austin Smith August 10th, 2014 at 16:33

Makes sense, background checks , which are illegal, do little good at all. Thugs will always get guns.

      • Rene' August 10th, 2014 at 20:44

Is it possible that this man may actually spend some time in jail for real???? Or does his Jebus conversion indemnity him from punishment?
Jailhouse conversions are common and totally meaningless.

76,000 votes!?!?!?!? Who would vote for a registered sex offender?? Have Fox and Rush done a great job or what? We have become a nation of morons.

    • Cosmic_Surfer August 10th, 2014 at 17:07

76,000 out of 18,055,783 registered voters (2/2013) works out to just about .42% or 42/100 of one percent. California has a population of about 35 million residents.

      • Roy Blankenship August 10th, 2014 at 18:55

That is 75,999 votes too many, presuming he voted for himself.

76,000 people is the population of Upland or Redwood City, a mid-sized town. I would be interested in knowing what the criteria was that caused these people to vote for a felon. Maybe it was his
“conversion to Christianity”. Yeah. How’s that working for you, “Glenn”?

      • whatthe46 August 10th, 2014 at 19:57

why would anyone other than his immediate family vote for him in the first place. did no one do their job. LOL!

        • Cosmic_Surfer August 10th, 2014 at 20:34

32,000 registered sex offenders in CA plus the back country survivalists and then there are the skinheads, Neo-Nazis and KKK…That is enough to get him elected

          • whatthe46 August 10th, 2014 at 20:38

i just shivered. no one who is a sex offender should be out of prison to begin with. of course i’m not talking about the 18 y/o with the 16 1/2 y/o girl friend.
