House Republicans Abandon Their Own Border Bill Due To Lack Of Party Support

House Republicans leaders scrapped a planned vote Thursday afternoon on immigration legislation after it became clear they did not (again) have the support of their own party to pass it.

So sad. USA Today reports:

House Republicans were scheduled to meet privately later today to see if they could salvage the legislation.
In a joint statement, GOP leaders said they would continue to work toward a solution to the flood of unaccompanied children detained at the U.S./Mexico border and put the onus on President Obama to act on his own.

“There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries,” read the statement.

The decision to reverse course on a $659 million emergency spending bill to address the surge of undocumented minors was an embarrassing end to the legislative agenda before the month-long August recess. The GOP bill would have also dispatched National Guard troops to the border and changed a 2008 law to make it easier to return children home to Central America.

Republican leaders tried to allow a separate vote on a measure that would block President Obama from any further executive action in order to stop the deportation of refugee children coming to the U.S. to escape violence.

Ted Cruz met privately with Republicans in order to garner support for its passage.

Boehner grouses: There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries

That’s rich, coming from the guy that cries like a little girl whenever Obama issues an executive order.

Did you see Harry Reid’s priceless reply? Since they have no problem with the president acting on his own, will they be dropping the lawsuit?

Cru(d)z would be there beating Boehner with a bat.

Just before leaving office, on Dec. 23, 2008, George W. Bush signed into law the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act. This bipartisan measure, named for a 19th century British abolitionist, was aimed at extending and beefing up efforts to prevent and prosecute human trafficking and protect the victims of trafficking. More importantly, it described exactly how unaccompanied children crossing the border must be treated.

At the time, the changes were intended to prevent immigration officials from inadvertently sending kids back to pimps and drug violence. The bill passed with remarkable speed – introduced Dec. 9, 2008, passed the House and Senate on the 10th and signed into law 13 days later.
