House Republicans Abandon Their Own Border Bill Due To Lack Of Party Support

Posted by | July 31, 2014 16:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

House Republicans leaders scrapped a planned vote Thursday afternoon on immigration legislation after it became clear they did not (again) have the support of their own party to pass it.

So sad. USA Today reports:

House Republicans were scheduled to meet privately later today to see if they could salvage the legislation.
In a joint statement, GOP leaders said they would continue to work toward a solution to the flood of unaccompanied children detained at the U.S./Mexico border and put the onus on President Obama to act on his own.

“There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries,” read the statement.

The decision to reverse course on a $659 million emergency spending bill to address the surge of undocumented minors was an embarrassing end to the legislative agenda before the month-long August recess. The GOP bill would have also dispatched National Guard troops to the border and changed a 2008 law to make it easier to return children home to Central America.

Republican leaders tried to allow a separate vote on a measure that would block President Obama from any further executive action in order to stop the deportation of refugee children coming to the U.S. to escape violence.

Ted Cruz met privately with Republicans in order to garner support for its passage.

Message being sent to Obama from Congressional Republicans:
“The House Republican caucus is not going to work toward solving any of the nation’s problems, and we’re going to make damned sure that the POTUS can’t either.”

Where’s the vote on the President’s $3.7 B funding for the December 2008 laws? Even the GOP have figured out whatever Cruz is for always fails including Ted’s $659 M for bus passes to Tijuana.

To avoid the embarrassment of another bill passed with Democratic support, the GOP babies took the ball and told the USA, “Screw you guys, I’m going home!”

This should be, but likely won’t, the last straw for Boenher as leader. He is neither an effective politician nor an effective manager. I’m not sure what is more aggravating, the disarray shown in the House today or the fact that a bunch of part-time employees were groaning about having to stay longer into their recess. It would be almost tolerable if when they went back to their districts, they worked at meeting with constituents (you know those pesky little people who hired and pay you) instead of vacationing from a job that is largely a vacation to begin with.

But, but, there’s all those fundraising dinners to go to!

      • Jeff Allen July 31st, 2014 at 17:22

There is only so much filet mignon they can consume before they really need to go to a townhall meeting eat some beef on weck, potato salad, and be answerable to those of us who gave them their job.

I hope that “beef on weck” is a bad thing! But, yes, these clowns ignore the electorate at all times other than their highly scripted appearances during election season. There should be a requirement for office that holding meaningful meetings, regularly, with their constituents is a part of their duties.

Beef on Weck is a very good thing. Thinly shaved roast beef simmered in aus jus and then served on a salted and seeded kimmelweck roll and slathered with prepared horseradish. It is a regional treat.

Sounds too good for a politician!

    • arc99 July 31st, 2014 at 17:44

      For once we agree.

There are clear signs that Mr. Boehner is not a competent Speaker of the House and that is apparent, regardless of which side of the political aisle you call home.

Love or hate Nancy Pelosi or Newt Gingrich, they knew how to do their jobs. No floor vote was planned unless and until they knew they had the votes.

it is true. there is no Constitutional requirement that the Speaker of the House must be a sitting member of the House, or even a member of Congress.

In fact, if Hilary Clinton is elected President and the Democrats re-take the House of Representatives, there is no Constitutional reason why Bill Clinton could not be elected as Speaker of the House, and third in line to the Presidency.

Right wing heads would surely be exploding over that one.

I’m about to have to make an appointment with my primary care doctor to be treated for RW whiplash.

On the one hand, when the president uses executive action to do the things the House won’t/can’t do, they accuse him of being ‘lawless’ and vote to sue him.

On the other hand, when Boehner can’t pass anything in the House because of Cruz’s meddling and his unruly, ignorant caucus, he then says President Obama can act alone!

I guess Boehner is now a three-pack a day smoker, and a three fifths a day alcoholic beverage imbiber.

It has got to suck to be John Boehner today.

    • tiredoftea July 31st, 2014 at 17:09

With all his Golfing around, I’ve never heard ‘The Boehner one holed it!’

Let me get this straight, Congress does absolutely nothing so once again Obama has to pass executive orders to get anything done and this is what Congress is suing him for because he did this in the past? If they want him to really stop using executive actions, shouldn’t they just do their job?
