Push Is On To Impeach Obama

Posted by | July 6, 2014 23:20 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

Conservatives are more forcefully than ever talking about bringing impeachment proceedings against President Obama. Forget about how this will affect the perception of a party and a Congress bereft of ideas. Forget about how this will be perceived, given that President Obama, committing no high crimes or misdemeanors, is our first black president. They hate his guts. They have Obama Derangement Syndrome.

It’s fueled by conservative anger over the president’s increasing use of executive actions on issues such as immigration and air pollution regulations, the exchange of Taliban detainees for the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdhal, and the familiar issue of the Affordable Care Act.

“I submit that Barack Hussein Obama’s unilateral negotiations with terrorists and the ensuing release of their key leadership without consult – mandated by law – with the U.S. Congress represents high crimes and misdemeanors, an impeachable offense,” former Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., wrote on his website in June.

Yeah, make sure you get his middle name in there to remind everyone that he’s got the same name as Saddam Hussein. Must be just as bad, too.

South Dakota’s Republican Party passed a resolution at its June convention calling for Obama’s impeachment for violating “his oath of office in numerous ways.”

“We wanted to have a shot across the bow to the president and Congress that nobody is above the law,” said Dr. Allen Unruh, the delegate who sponsored the resolution. “Our goal is to embolden Congress.”

Unruh said he has a “thick book on impeachable offenses of the president.” So does Andrew McCarthy, who’s been making the conservative media rounds with his recently released book “Faithless Execution: Building the Case for Obama’s Impeachment,” which offers a sort of template for removing Obama from office.

I urge the Republicans to keep doing this. Don’t come up with a better health plan. Keep pretending that it’s President Obama who screwed up Iraq. Continue pouding the impeachment drum. Then look at who the president is after 2016.

Bring it on. These idiots are digging their own political grave.

    • Eric Trommater July 6th, 2014 at 23:44

I may be cynical but I don’t think this whole “bring-it-on” mentality is a good strategy. If you give the House the kind of broad investigative powers that an impeachment invokes and send them on a fishing trip through the Executive Branch, it will only hamstring and distract the President and America will suffer. I said the same thing about impeaching Bush. Dig deep enough and you will always find something that will appear scandalous to just enough of Americans to throw mud on the office and erode even more support for our government institutions.

      • tiredoftea July 6th, 2014 at 23:50

They will give it to themselves. All they need do is bring a resolution to the floor of Congress and get most of the fringe rightie votes. As if by magic, Impeachment proceedings!

        • Eric Trommater July 7th, 2014 at 00:04

It may be inevitable but that doesn’t mean we should welcome it.

          • tiredoftea July 7th, 2014 at 00:10

It is the conclusion to the fringe right talking amongst themselves for such a long time and not indulging themselves in reality. I don’t welcome it, per se, but if they go down this road, they will come out the other end with the same low(er) public perceptions as the Gingrich, Delay and others who, ultimately, helped Clinton get a few things done.

            • Eric Trommater July 7th, 2014 at 00:12

Or use it to throw just enough mud to sneak in and take over all three branches of Government like they did in 2000.

              • tiredoftea July 7th, 2014 at 00:21

They have two out of three. They don’t really need to take a chance on impeachment proceedings.

                • Eric Trommater July 7th, 2014 at 00:24

Law of unintended consequences. They would have had no chance in 2000 if they hadn’t thrown just enough mud on Clinton to steal enough votes from Gore to sneak in their guy.

                  • tiredoftea July 7th, 2014 at 00:35

The FL fix was in with Jeb and Katherine Harris stirring up enough doubt about election procedures for the fringe right SCOTUS to step in and give the victory to W. Gore had more popular votes, overall and FL would have put him over in the electoral votes.

                    • Eric Trommater July 7th, 2014 at 00:51

Florida would have been meaningless if Gore had been so muddied by the Clinton Impeachment that he couldn’t even carry his home state of Tennessee.

                    • tiredoftea July 7th, 2014 at 01:01

Daddy Gore’s favors were called in long before Al was the Dem candidate. The Gore name was not much use to him.

          • mea_mark July 7th, 2014 at 10:28

We aren’t really welcoming it. We are saying we are prepared for it and we are going to make you pay accordingly for it. If it damages the reputation of our government institutions then maybe we need to change our institutions so that stupid stuff like this doesn’t happen.

      • AnthonyLook July 7th, 2014 at 00:05

It’s coming, whether we like the idea or not; there is no reasoning with the tea party birther racist House, even President Obama has finally learned this.

    • tiredoftea July 6th, 2014 at 23:48

They crawled in it immediately after the failed Clinton attempt.

      • Eric Trommater July 7th, 2014 at 00:02

You see that’s not how I remember it. As I remember it the GOP held on to majorities in both houses for the next 7 years and even were able to sneak a completely unqualified aristocrat whose father the country had turned out of the Presidency 7 years earlier. The part of the election he stole was minuscule compared to the huge amount of the electorate who voted for him to “bring integrity back to the White House.”
I also seem to remember that within two years of controlling all three branches of Government the GOP was able to undo all the progress made by Democrats in the 90’s and turn a budget surplus into huge deficits. My memory may be wrong but who knows?

Oh I reread your comment with my sarcastic voice and now it makes sense. Sorry. The first time I read it I had Morgan Freeman’s voice in my head dictating it and it was all serious.

            • tiredoftea July 7th, 2014 at 00:25

The rest of those Tea Baggin’ morons all need to be voted out in November. Get out and vote people!!

“a long list of impeachable offenses”
They could make a good case by listing the drone program, killing American citizens without trial, Guantanamo, torture, renditions, warrantless spying …

But no, they’re fine with all that, they list giving us health care and clean air, bringing our troops home, avoiding wars. And they expect us to take them seriously!!?

Of course this is coming; It’s an African American president, after all; has there ever been any doubt that they would throw everything they could to see what would stick. Their lies and fake scandals all have been received with a loud thud of failure. Even this Benghazi committee witch hunt is obvious to them is a losing proposition; on issue after issue the pulse of America eludes the Republicans. Now that the inevitable results from their signature epic lie of war debacle are manifesting in Iraq and the American people (and the world) are resoundingly pointing the finger of deserved blame at their Republican feet, as they churn at the visuals of their failures; they have no recourse but to go nuclear- IMPEACH. The final self inflicted Republican deathblow that will have the result of a ferocious solidarity against all things tea party, against all things Republican. BRING IT ON !

It doesn’t work that way unfortunately. Give the GOP that kind of investigative power and it’s just open season on the POTUS and the Executive Branch. If he had an afair on his wife 10 years ago it will be the lead on every news cast. Every nut ball conspiracy theory will suddenly be given credence. It will be a chance for his detractors from both parties to throw mud on him, disgrace the office and reinforce the meme that “all politicians are crooks.”

      • fancypants July 7th, 2014 at 00:15

I do but the answer is no one knows. Remember Clinton’s Impeachment started as an investigation into White Water. Eventually they expanded and expanded the investigation until they backed him into a corner, on a completely unrelated matter, and forced him into a place where he had to either tell the world and his wife he had cheated on her or commit perjury.

These people in the GOP who want to push this process are pure evil and are doing so with the main goal of eroding the office. Kucinich would have just been playing into their hands.

  11. arc99 July 6th, 2014 at 23:57

A conviction in the US Senate requires a two thirds majority of the members present. Even if the GOP takes the Senate in 2014, 66 votes in favor of impeachment is not going to happen. Impeachment proceedings would be a pointless kangaroo court which will accomplish not a single tangible benefit for the nation.

The party of NO ideas cannot win at the ballot box. So they launch voter id initiatives, cut early voting days, close polling places and rant about a replay of impeaching a twice-elected Democratic President.

They are not stupid. They know there is zero chance of conviction. More importantly, I think they also know that the President has not committed impeachable offenses. This is pure partisan politics driven by a rabid, psychotic far right wing base. I am inclined to agree with jasperjava, let these contemptible cretins bring it on. Then as we head into November 2016, their failed charade will be the final nail in the coffin of GOP Presidential aspirations, and we will have a Democratic President selecting Supreme Court justices for at least another 8 years, even if Hilary does not run.

It amazes me how willing the GOP is to commit political suicide just to score a couple brownie points with the lunatics.

Mr. Combs is correct that it would be extraordinarily dumb politically for the republicans to impeach President Obama. I don’t think there is any chance of impeachment absent significant new information.

But I don’t understand how someone like Mr. Combs declares that conservatives “hate his guts.” There are about 25% of American who declare themselves to be conservative. Why does Mr. Combs accuse so many millions of Americans of hating the president on such a personal basis? I’m a conservative/libertarian and certainly do not hate President Obama. I almost always find him likeable on a personal basis.

Alan was offering his opinion on the motivations of the people advocating impeachment. I wholeheartedly agree with his opinion. The accusation is not directed at anyone conservative or otherwise who agrees that there are no legitimate grounds whatsoever to draft articles of impeachment,

On the other hand, If trumped up accusations of impeachable offenses from people who are convinced that the birth certificate is a fake, is not indicative of irrational hatred, I don’t know what is.

You say tat Alan is right and it would be “politically dumb”. I say the important consideration is that no impeachable offenses have been committed and frankly anyone who opposes impeachment only because it is “politically dumb”, is not really different from the zealots demanding impeachment.

Nullifying the votes of over 62 million citizens by impeaching a President for no valid reason is what we should all be concerned about, regardless of whether or not it is “politically dumb”.

Kansas city: considering that the house is run by the tea-party i don’t think they’ll let a lack of evidence prevent them from voting to impeach. the problem is that impeachment is not removal from office–only the senate can do that, and that’s not going to happen. so all this impeachment talk is just more political theater.

It’s just a shiny thing to dangle in front of the rubes for the midterms.

I couldn’t stand Reagan, Bush or Bush–but I’m with you. I didn’t HATE them, I hated their policies. I still do, as we are still suffering the results–including (at least in part) the crisis of refugees from Central America that are now flooding our border.

All of the failed ODS birther nuts sob ‘why don’t that GOP Boehner impeach them fellers fer being uppity?’ These loons are so ginned up by repub politicians repeating every entertainers delusion of GOP Leader Rusty the misogynist Racist, and his Limbaughtomized marionettes Hannity, Beck, jihadi Jones and Birther-U’s Wing Nut Daily. Had delusional’s been capable of paying attention, a tether to reality would have been Issa’s “0 indictments” following 50 weeks of hearings per year.

if they understood the constitution they’d know they are wasting their time–and doing nothing to help the citizens of this country.
