Push Is On To Impeach Obama
It’s fueled by conservative anger over the president’s increasing use of executive actions on issues such as immigration and air pollution regulations, the exchange of Taliban detainees for the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdhal, and the familiar issue of the Affordable Care Act.
“I submit that Barack Hussein Obama’s unilateral negotiations with terrorists and the ensuing release of their key leadership without consult – mandated by law – with the U.S. Congress represents high crimes and misdemeanors, an impeachable offense,” former Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., wrote on his website in June.
Yeah, make sure you get his middle name in there to remind everyone that he’s got the same name as Saddam Hussein. Must be just as bad, too.
South Dakota’s Republican Party passed a resolution at its June convention calling for Obama’s impeachment for violating “his oath of office in numerous ways.”
“We wanted to have a shot across the bow to the president and Congress that nobody is above the law,” said Dr. Allen Unruh, the delegate who sponsored the resolution. “Our goal is to embolden Congress.”
Unruh said he has a “thick book on impeachable offenses of the president.” So does Andrew McCarthy, who’s been making the conservative media rounds with his recently released book “Faithless Execution: Building the Case for Obama’s Impeachment,” which offers a sort of template for removing Obama from office.
I urge the Republicans to keep doing this. Don’t come up with a better health plan. Keep pretending that it’s President Obama who screwed up Iraq. Continue pouding the impeachment drum. Then look at who the president is after 2016.

I may be cynical but I don’t think this whole “bring-it-on” mentality is a good strategy. If you give the House the kind of broad investigative powers that an impeachment invokes and send them on a fishing trip through the Executive Branch, it will only hamstring and distract the President and America will suffer. I said the same thing about impeaching Bush. Dig deep enough and you will always find something that will appear scandalous to just enough of Americans to throw mud on the office and erode even more support for our government institutions.

You see that’s not how I remember it. As I remember it the GOP held on to majorities in both houses for the next 7 years and even were able to sneak a completely unqualified aristocrat whose father the country had turned out of the Presidency 7 years earlier. The part of the election he stole was minuscule compared to the huge amount of the electorate who voted for him to “bring integrity back to the White House.”
I also seem to remember that within two years of controlling all three branches of Government the GOP was able to undo all the progress made by Democrats in the 90’s and turn a budget surplus into huge deficits. My memory may be wrong but who knows?

Congress and our country would be better off to stand again for respect for the law, especially of powerful people, including the President of the United States.

A conviction in the US Senate requires a two thirds majority of the members present. Even if the GOP takes the Senate in 2014, 66 votes in favor of impeachment is not going to happen. Impeachment proceedings would be a pointless kangaroo court which will accomplish not a single tangible benefit for the nation.
The party of NO ideas cannot win at the ballot box. So they launch voter id initiatives, cut early voting days, close polling places and rant about a replay of impeaching a twice-elected Democratic President.
They are not stupid. They know there is zero chance of conviction. More importantly, I think they also know that the President has not committed impeachable offenses. This is pure partisan politics driven by a rabid, psychotic far right wing base. I am inclined to agree with jasperjava, let these contemptible cretins bring it on. Then as we head into November 2016, their failed charade will be the final nail in the coffin of GOP Presidential aspirations, and we will have a Democratic President selecting Supreme Court justices for at least another 8 years, even if Hilary does not run.

Mr. Combs is correct that it would be extraordinarily dumb politically for the republicans to impeach President Obama. I don’t think there is any chance of impeachment absent significant new information.
But I don’t understand how someone like Mr. Combs declares that conservatives “hate his guts.” There are about 25% of American who declare themselves to be conservative. Why does Mr. Combs accuse so many millions of Americans of hating the president on such a personal basis? I’m a conservative/libertarian and certainly do not hate President Obama. I almost always find him likeable on a personal basis.

You say tat Alan is right and it would be “politically dumb”. I say the important consideration is that no impeachable offenses have been committed and frankly anyone who opposes impeachment only because it is “politically dumb”, is not really different from the zealots demanding impeachment.
Nullifying the votes of over 62 million citizens by impeaching a President for no valid reason is what we should all be concerned about, regardless of whether or not it is “politically dumb”.

I couldn’t stand Reagan, Bush or Bush–but I’m with you. I didn’t HATE them, I hated their policies. I still do, as we are still suffering the results–including (at least in part) the crisis of refugees from Central America that are now flooding our border.
