Koch Brother: ‘I’m A Social Liberal’

David Koch spoke to Barbara Walters on a special called “The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2014”.

“I’m basically a libertarian, and I’m a conservative on economic matters, and I’m a social liberal,” Koch told ABC News’ Barbara Walters during an interview for her special “The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2014″…

Koch, who supports abortion rights and gay marriage, said he isn’t concerned with candidates he supports who don’t share some of his views. He said his primary concern when choosing a candidate to support is their fiscal policies.

“What I want these candidates to do is to support a balanced budget,” he said. “I’m very worried that if the budget is not balanced that inflation could occur and the economy of our country could suffer terribly.”

His words and his actions don’t match at all. How does he explain, for example, his and his brother’s willingness to steal from Native Americans, or to pollute so extravagantly that they’ve had to pay millions of dollars in fines; his opposition to “big government” but his willingness to accept millions in government subsidies? How does he explain his opposition to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid; his willingness to privatize virtually everything, including schools, and his drive to kill unions and collective bargaining?

I believe him when he says he is a social liberal. Unfortunately, I do not think those issues are as important to him as his bottom line. That is our biggest problem in America right now. We place economic issues above societal issues. We create laws to boost our economy regardless of how bad it hurts society. To be a social liberal and an economic conservative is an oxymoron. One is not sustainable while the other exists.
