House Speaker John Boehner refused to accept $33 billion in cuts in existing budgets to reach an agreement to keep the government open. President Obama says if Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can’t reach an agreement today, he’ll meet again with congressional leaders tomorrow.

The president also noted that he and the Democrats are offering $73 billion in budget cuts, including “programs that we care deeply about.”

On the other hand, Obama said he will not cut programs that are essential to growing the economy and creating, including education, infrastructure, and research and development. He said nobody can expect to get “100% of what they want.”

In criticizing “ideology,” Obama criticized Republican attachments to budget bills that would changes to abortion policy and the enforcement powers of the Environmental Protection Agency.

“We can’t have a ‘my way or the highway approach’ to this problem,” Obama said…

Boehner’s statement referenced the fact that most of the Democrats’ $73 billion involves budget items that have never passed; the cuts from existing budgets are more like $33 billion.
