Republican governor says John Lewis should thank white politicians and understand history

That would be Maine’s ignorant Paul LePage.

Asked about the dozens of House members who are boycotting Trump’s inauguration, Gov. Paul LePage (R-ME) fulminated that Lewis should be thanking Republicans instead of protesting against them.

“How ‘bout John Lewis last week, criticizing the president? I will just say this. John Lewis oughta look at history,” LePage said in his weekly radio interview with local station WVOM. “It was Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves. It was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant that fought against Jim Crow laws.”

“A simple ‘thank you’ would suffice,” the governor added.

Can’t do too much damage in Maine

Now would be a good time to tear up that resume unless the south is hiring

  3. halfwayin January 17th, 2017 at 15:45

It only took the south seven years to erase the results of the Civil war

These people are completely tone deaf.

Every state at some times gets to have shame and embarrassment. It’s Maines turn. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/287cf5f05cb3ee1247fccfb69b570b92acbea0ebec6b5d63257776a046ef234a.jpg

    ‘Lincoln freed the slaves’.

I swear I actually heard a radio ad with that theme some years back, apparently from some local GOP organization, I think during the 2008 campaign. I was so stunned I couldn’t believe it, but that is the extent of GOP outreach to Black voters. Tell them something that happened 150 years ago and expect them to be SO grateful.

Boy! What an ingrate! Instead of getting down on his knees and thanking the WHITE MAN for freeing the slaves that were enslaved by the WHITE MAN, he’s embarrassing the GOP with historical facts. Besides, facts are overrated. Ask tRump and Fox “news”.

John McCain should thank the North Vietnamese for giving him his freedom.

  8. Mensa Member January 17th, 2017 at 18:11

LePage thinks that John Lewis hates whites as much as he hates blacks.

  9. Mensa Member January 17th, 2017 at 18:14

Too bad those type of Republicans aren’t around anymore.

The oppression of African Americans didn’t end with slavery, perhaps the governor is the one who needs to understand history

Paul LePage , congratulations, you have just won the George Wallace Humanitarian Award

Republicans? Lincoln, yes. But can you point out any civil rights icons that are Republicans since say… 1963?

    • bpollen January 18th, 2017 at 08:30

Just for ships and grins, I googled “republican civil rights icon.”

Got two results, both from some far-right 4chan lover’s twitter account.

      There’s a message for ya.
