Obama commutes sentence of Chelsea Manning

President Obama has commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning.

The White House says Manning is one of 209 inmates whose sentences Obama is shortening.

Manning is more than six years into a 35-year sentence for leaking classified government and military documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. Her sentence is now set to expire May 17.

She was known as Bradley Manning at the time of her 2010 arrest and attempted suicide twice last year.

Obama is also pardoning 64 people, including retired Gen. James Cartwright, who was charged with making false statements during a probe into disclosure of classified information.

There are much better people to pardon President, such as Marcus Garvey.

I think this is a preemptive pardon, after her 6 year sentence is served.

We already know that will happen. Which cabinet position do you see him being given?

damned right – token pardons are cute and unjust jail times are cruel.

Commuting and pardons are different animals. Pardons essentially wipe the crime slate. Commuting a sentence means the conviction and all that it entails stands, just that they are released on either time served or a preset time different from the original sentencing.

According to WAPO he’ll be set free in May, 2017.

That’s what my local news reported, Leavenworth is just down the road from me. Folks are losing their minds over it, you know, the same folks that were fine with David Petraeus getting 18 months probation.

          • Gina Bousquet January 18th, 2017 at 07:05

Absolutely! Petraeus slap on the wrist.

      • Suzanne McFly January 18th, 2017 at 10:36

Honestly, I don’t think Chelsea should be pardoned. I don’t have a problem with commuting her sentence. She did leak top secret information and that should not be dismissed in any way. I don’t know all the details of why she did what she did, but I know she seems to be dealing with some monsters (tried to commit suicide twice) and I think she just needs help. Having said that, Petraeus leaked top secret information about undercover agents, he deserves to be in prison.

Agreed. It could all be in my had but it feels like Manning was unduly influenced by Assange and the military should never have placed in that position without further psychological testing. He committed a crime, a big one and I get it but the average sentence for other whistle blowers/paper sharers is 18 months. They just don’t like the trans thing. If Obama had not commuted his sentence, there is no way it would have happened.

Bo bergdahl didn’t make the first cut It’s not looking good for him.

I’m glad the trumpster agrees to this decision and who knows Maybe Julian assange will keep his promise and fly himself to the USA for trial.

Then the party will start on who finked on who

“The decision by President Obama rescued Ms Manning from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated in a male military prison.”

Suddenly the deplorables are outraged and shocked over a Mannings treasonous relationship with WikiLeaks.
