Massachusetts college won’t fly U.S. flag

Posted by | November 24, 2016 18:00 | Filed under: Politics

Hampshire College, a school of 1400, will not fly the flag.

We hope this will enable us to instead focus our efforts on addressing racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and behaviors,” Hampshire’s president, Jonathan Lash, said in a statement.

A day after the presidential election, the college decided to lower the flag to half staff  “as an expression of grief over the violent deaths being suffered in this country and globally,” Lash said, but that angered some students on campus and in the community.

Instead, the college will not fly any flags on campus “for the time being.”

    Let the death threats begin.

collected two last week…face to face, even…I’m not overly concerned, as I know these bozos from work…they are all talk…less action…and sucked at their jobs…I still have to be careful, there are other ways to retaliate…I thought I knew these people…this is my biggest concern about Trumpism…it has changed folks…yes, the bad stuff is just below the surface with all of us…but it seems the worst of the worst are Trumpers…

That’s pretty stupid. In my opinion.

    • whatthe46 November 24th, 2016 at 20:02

why? and you know i respect your opinion. as far as my 2 cents are concerned, i’m ok with it. in this climate, that flag DOES NOT represent all Americans. when the RWNJ’s hold open arms to someone like tRump and dismisses racism & bigotry which he represents, especially as a “president elect” clearly we’ve been sent a message. we have law enforcement in various degrees of power, that have openly used their position to discriminate against American citizens, because tRump says it’s ok. there are teachers, in 2 of the latest cases, that have said some really disgusting sh!t to children. grabbed a 5y/o muslim child by the neck calling her a terrorist, another saying if you’re going to hang one black person, hang them all. a judge, as you know telling newly sworn in citizens if they don’t like tRump that they can go back to where they came from. you’ve got a sick twisted POS elected filling his cabinet with the biggest racist and bigots he could find. that flag no longer represents our countries values. the RWNJ’s GOPissers sought to that.

Wah! You’re being mean to me! I’m going to tweet mean stuff about you at 3:00 am!

Seriously, respect their stance, but I’ll not take my flag down for this…this…thing. Fly it upside down, maybe.

      • Buford2k11 November 25th, 2016 at 01:02

Maybe part of the “resistance” is to fly the American flag upside down…this is usually a sign that there are Americans in distress…just a thought…

        • whatthe46 November 25th, 2016 at 01:14

i forgot about that, meaning the upside down flag is a sign of distress. in that case, i suppose hanging it upside down can mean the same as not flying it at all. i think it would also be noticed more as opposed to not seeing it at all. you’re right!

This is the problem when one wraps themselves in the flag. Sometimes it doesn’t fit like it use to.

  4. amersham1046 November 24th, 2016 at 20:37

  5. Dude1394 November 24th, 2016 at 20:37

I guess they do not need USA tax dollars either.

    • arc99 November 24th, 2016 at 21:02

I guess you are unaware of a little detail called the first amendment which prohibits the government from penalizing speech.

    • Larry Schmitt November 24th, 2016 at 21:18

Unless there’s some law they’ve broken that makes them ineligible for whatever payments they would get, you’re wrong. This country doesn’t require that everyone love the government, or even the country. Unless, of course, next year congress passes a law to that effect.

Can you point me at the statute that pegs federal funds to flag waving? Or one that requires that the flag be flown at college?

      • The Original Just Me November 25th, 2016 at 05:00

The Brown Shirts will enforce the “NEW ” Rules.

        • bpollen November 25th, 2016 at 15:46

Did you know that Hugo Boss supplied the uniforms for the Brownshirts and the SS?

    • StoneyCurtisll November 25th, 2016 at 04:57

      You guessed wrong..

    • The Original Just Me November 25th, 2016 at 05:02

It is a Voluntary PLEDGE of Allegiance to the Flag and NOT a Government Requirement.

            • whatthe46 November 25th, 2016 at 10:45

not 5 mil dollars in expenses.

            • whatthe46 November 25th, 2016 at 10:47

and one other thing, she wanted to raise 2.5 mil after she reached that mark, she should have cut off anyone else trying to donate. so, what is she going to do with 2.5 mil not necessarily needed?

Just seeing the headline I knew it had to be Hampshire, having grown up in Amherst. It’s the school where a guy got a degree in Frisbee! https://www.hampshire.edu/library/chapter-8-student-life-and-the-houses#28C
