Oregonians submit ballot proposal to secede from union

Two Portlanders submitted a ballot proposal for 2018 to have Oregon secede from the union.

On Thursday morning, Jennifer Rollins, a lawyer, and Christian Trejbal, a writer, filed the Oregon Secession Act.

“Oregonian values are no longer the values held by the rest of the United States,” Trejbal said over the phone Thursday.

Those values? “Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness,” Trejbal said, “plus equality.”

“Obviously,” he said, the ballot proposal “came about partially in response to the election results on Tuesday.”

“But,” he added, “it’s been developing over time.”

We can’t be like the ignorant people in Texas, we are better than that. Our actions right now will show who the true Americans are by staying here and fighting for a government who represents all of us. If we walk away or not fight for what is right, rump will have free will to do as he pleases and will make bush’s time in office seem restrained.

      Excellent.

Agreed, the petulant, childish behaviors of the right over the past 8 years is nothing we should try and match. By rising above it, it shines an even brighter light on it.

Yeah but that “when they go low we go high” thing didn’t work out at all for this election did it? It may take much more than just words to stop the fascists….

Especially when they now control the military and most of the police forces. This will not end well.

I know, I just hate the thought of looking like them

          No talk of violence please.

Be prepared for at least four more years of party-before-nation blocking of everything

Only do that if Trump was in power forever, eventually, he will leave office also!

Can we put an end please, to all these secession stories? It’s not happening. It’s wishful thinking by a bunch of people who didn’t like the election results. Well, guess what? We’re stuck with trump for either one term or until he is impeached or quits because it’s too much work. Instead of wasting energy on pointless protests and secession talk, try to figure out how to minimize the damage.

At the least Oregon can claim Texas is to blame for their political idea.

  5. Comicus November 11th, 2016 at 20:51

What is considered a good idea in Texas is usually stupid everywhere else.

United we stand, divided we fall? It would appear there are two Americas. Its only a fantasy scenario, but maybe we should have the red states of America, and the blue states of America. It sure as hell doesn’t look like the United States of America any longer.Since my state,California is dark blue,we could declare California,Washington,Oregon,Nevada, and Colorado the blue western states, and the block of New England states the blue eastern states. Most of the south are already the red states of America,so that would be easy, the red south states of America.States in the middle could vote on which they would like to join,as could Hawaii and Alaska.

Seems to me that would solve a lot of problems. In DC we could do away with repuke and dems, and have blue or red representatives on each side of the aisle, who would still be in charge of the larger national issues, and negotiate treaties of cooperation and co-existence,as well as international issues. If that sounds like a good idea, vote Gary P. In 2020,make America blue and red.Time to take my meds now.

Secession of the West Coast is NOT practical. In order to be successful a Country must have something it can sell to other countries in order to be able to purchase goods the Seceding State can not produce it’s self. The West Coast States have no natural resources left to process and sell. They could not survive without the rest of the country’s marketable goods.

I can understand the reasoning behind this proposal. Oregon is different than the rest of the country and has been for a long time. Oregon values are different than, say, Oklahoma.

There is a reason we are on the “left coast”!

But this idea just wouldn’t work. Maybe if Washington, Oregon and California

seceded together and formed a new nation….

But the states that _I_ would like to see go are those of the old Confederacy. Most of them receive more federal money than they pay in taxes. Plus their regressive values are keeping the rest of the country from moving into the 21st century.
