Here’s how Clinton could wind up in the White House

Posted by | November 10, 2016 16:30 | Filed under: Politics

Albeit highly unlikely, electors who can’t bring themselves to vote for Trump could toss it to Hillary Clinton.

…there is technically nothing stopping any of the electors from voting their conscience and refusing to support the candidate to whom they were bound, or from abstaining from voting altogether.

There’s even a name for it: becoming a “faithless elector.”

The idea of electors reversing their vote is rarely discussed — and was most recently bandied about after the incredibly close 2000 election in which George Bush narrowly beat Al Gore. And electors going “faithless” is exceedingly rare.

Well over 99 percent of electors throughout American history have voted as pledged, according to an analysis done by the New York Times.

It does happen, though.

I’d love to see a ton of ‘faithless electors’ casting their votes for Hillary Clinton in the wake of the horrifying racist attacks which we’re suddenly seeing. But what would THAT result in?

      The right thing.

You mean attacks like this one?

this is never okay, but there are more incidents going in the other direction.

        • Robert M. Snyder November 11th, 2016 at 08:47

          How do you know that?

          • Carla Akins November 11th, 2016 at 11:32

            You’re kidding, right?

            • Robert M. Snyder November 13th, 2016 at 17:39

Nope. It was a serious question. I watch CNN, Fox, and MSNBC. I also watch Sky News and Al Jazeera. And I have looked at FBI crime statistics. Please tell me where else I need to look, because I’m not seeing “more incidents going in the other direction”. What kind of incidents are you talking about?

              • Carla Akins November 14th, 2016 at 04:29

First, the incident above is a road rage altercation and has nothing to do with politics. Btween FON & LL, four were reported here.

All of the news agnecies below reported these incidents, plus thousands of lesser ones. ABC, CNN, Time and Fortune

I’m not even going to waste my time debating this with you. If you think that video was a road rage incident, you are obviously blinded by partisanship. Have a nice day.

It’s not my opinion, it’s what was reported in the news.

                    • Robert M. Snyder November 14th, 2016 at 11:25

I know exactly where that Vo Tech school is located in York PA. My nephew lives in York, and I spoke with him over the weekend. He said that there were two students carrying a Trump sign and a third student, off to the side, shouted “White power”. I watched the video, which is very short. I don’t know what happened before or after that video was taken, but my nephew’s account sounds plausible. But let’s suppose that the students carrying the sign were the ones chanting White Power. Big deal. No punches were thrown. Nobody got hurt. And the students were suspended, so there were consequences.

In the video that I linked, a group of young men are punching and kicking an older man while someone is repeatedly shouting “You voted Trump” and “Don’t vote Trump”. It is not clear whether the people who threw the punches were thinking about Trump, or whether that was just coming from the onlookers.

So in both videos, the words are apparently coming from onlookers while the people shown in the video may be motivated by other factors.

But in one video, there is a lot of physical violence. In the other, there are two students holding up a campaign sign. I realize that free speech rights can be restricted in public schools. But what those two students did (carrying a campaign sign) would be considered as protected free speech in a public place. What the people did in the other video is a clear case of assault and battery.

You are attempting to equate protected free speech with the crime of assault and battery. Only in Liberal Land would that kind of logic fly.

“While it’s clear Wilcox was assaulted, it seems from initial police reports and his own statements that the assault stemmed from a traffic incident. Bystanders are heard taunting him for voting for Trump, but that’s not what the impetus for the beating was.”

Okay, so if a 50-year old black man causes a traffic accident in a white neighborhood, and several young, white guys start beating on him while some young white women shout “You voted for Obama” and “Don’t vote Obama”, you’re going to tell me that the beating was not political because the assault “stemmed from a traffic incident”?

Give me a break. You’re grasping at straws.

If only that were true! Six months ago I gave up my lifelong habit of drinking several soft drinks per day. Now I am nearly ten pounds heavier! LOL

HFCS consumption, effects more than just weight issues bob.

                    • Robert M. Snyder November 14th, 2016 at 12:41

It’s amazing how many products have HFCS on the ingredient label. Soybeans are another example (estrogen?). If you drive across northern Ohio on Route 80, it looks like a checkerboard of corn/soy/corn/soy.

My physiology is strongly affected by the season. I gain a lot every Fall and lose it again in the Spring. This would be a wonderful thing if I were a bear living in the woods.

If we were smart, we would invest in companies that sell comfort food. The combination of winter weather and political uncertainty will probably result in record sales of chocolate, potato chips, etc.

    • Carla Akins November 11th, 2016 at 05:07

Agreed. Sure, it would be great if Trump could be denied office but does that do to our system, the American process?

      • Blogvader November 11th, 2016 at 07:28

It would set a pretty bad precedent.

  2. arc99 November 10th, 2016 at 16:38

It would be a scenario more fitting a movie script than the transition of power in the United States. But if the electors voted for Hillary and Tim Kaine, it would be quite a mess.

I bet all those “strict constructionists” would not care if the whole thing was entirely Constitutional.

At the end of it all, Hillary and Kaine could immediately resign for the good of the nation and let the GOP led by the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan clean up the mess. Remember, the Speaker is next in line after the VP.

Wouldn’t that be delicious, the Speaker the Trumpers love to hate as President, and not their guy..

“There’s even a name for it: becoming a “faithless elector.” The idea of electors reversing their vote is rarely discussed — and was most recently bandied about after the incredibly close 2000 election…”

??? It was discussed FOUR DAYS ago, when two Washington state Democratic electors were on the fence about voting for Hillary… here’s the relevant text from the article:

Two Democratic electors from the state of Washington are considering bucking tradition and refusing to vote for Hillary Clinton, even if the nominee wins the popular vote in the state on Nov. 8.

One — a man named Robert Satiacum, who is a member of Washington’s Puyallup tribe — has promised that he will absolutely not be casting his ballot for Clinton, telling the Associated Press in an interview that “she will not get my vote, period.”

“She doesn’t care about my land or my air or my fire or my water,” Satiacum, a Bernie Sanders supporter, said of Clinton.

The Puyallup tribe, according to the Seattle Times, is one of the state’s largest contributors to Clinton’s presidential campaign, and the Democratic candidate even visited the Puyallup reservation back in March, just before the state’s primary caucuses.

Washington state has 12 Democratic electors, and while it’s rare for “faithless electors,” as they’re called…

      • lageorgia November 11th, 2016 at 01:17

no. if an impeachment occurs then it would be Pence. if its the EV vote then it can be voted for Clinton.

        • dewired4u November 11th, 2016 at 15:38

robert said pence was found to be mentally unfit so it would be ryan, we’re still screwed.

          • lageorgia November 11th, 2016 at 15:47

Yep and since the next down the list after Ryan is a Republican…they’re all damn Republicans we have nothing.

      • robert November 11th, 2016 at 12:15

I don’t think the public or world could put up with Paul Ryan’s days off ” for family time ” the public eats his bs but I had him Disqualified since he took the job as SOTH or a state representative for that matter….

Just another demonstration of how ludicrous your “electoral college” system is, America. It made a small amount of sense back when you were first founded, and the only way for information to move from A to B was by horseback, but there is literally no reason to have an electoral college system in this day-and-age.

ah G, we had a program on tv that explained the system – 59million french viewers are still saying, with our delightful accents, “huh?”
