Richard Spencer: Trump has benefited the #Alt-Right

Richard Spencer, who created the term AltRight, talked to me on radio Wednesday night. Spencer told me that the #AltRight movement has definitely been bolstered by not just the candidacy of Donald Trump, but also by Hillary Clinton’s criticism. He said it’s a difficult time to be a “white male in America,” and that Donald Trump is not a “white nationalist” but an “American nationalist:”

SPENCER: I don’t think Donald Trump is a white nationalist. I think Donald Trump is an American nationalist. I’m looking at, and I think all of the #AltRight is looking at, where is that arrow pointing? Is it pointing towards the left? Or is it pointing towards the phony right…

Trump has been good for our movement. Trump has brought nationalism into politics that wasn’t there before. He’s brought it in a real visceral sense. So yes, I think the Trump phenomenon is a great phenomenon. So far the Trump movement has benefited the #AltRight.

Of all the racists Alan has interviewed recently, Richard Spencer came across as the most reasonable. He even made a few legitimate points.

Which makes him all the more dangerous.

Spencer’s “rationality” is based in disputed or debunked theories of race.

For starters, the whole concept of “race” is dubious.

I, personally, believe that “race” is an unhelpful over-generalization about culture and ethnicity.

Secondly, Spencer (and his movement) misunderstand racial distinctions like intelligence.

IQ tests, for example, measure only one kind of intelligence. And, unhelpfully, it measures the kind of learning that is highly valued by western civilization. This gives euro-Americans a huge home field advantage in academics.

Lastly, the racists blow-off individuality which is a core American value.

For example, there are endless different types of black people. Yes, many prefer to hang with other black people.

But many African-Americans excel in the white-majority sub-culture. (And many white people fail in their own white culture! For some reason, they all call Alan’s show. ;-)

It is a core American value that these exceptional people have the freedom to find a place where they can pursue happiness. Racial segregation denies them this fundamental right.

OK — this is nuanced stuff. The racist message is much more simple. But don’t fall for it.
