Until “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” debuted in September 1955, most TV Westerns — “The Lone Ranger,” ”Hopalong Cassidy,” the singing cowboys’ series — were aimed at adolescent boys.

“Wyatt Earp,” on the other hand, was based on a real-life Western hero, and some of its stories were authentic. (The real Earp, who lived from 1848 to 1929, is most famous for his participation in the 1881 “Shootout at the O.K. Corral” in Tombstone, Arizona.)

Critics quickly praised it, and it made O’Brian a star.

I remember the old Wyatt Earp show. As I recall, Bat Masterson starring Gene Barry was on either right before or right after Earp. When I was younger, those were the last shows of the evening I got to watch before my bedtime.

The life and times of the real Earps have been a bit of a hobby for me. I watched the movies. Read some historical pieces and I still have no idea if they were the celebrated heroes as seen on television. Or if the Earp brothers and their accomplice Doc Holliday were little more than the mafia with badges.

For a bit of trivia, Wyatt Earp is buried in Colma, California. Colma is an unusual town just south of San Francisco. It consists almost entirely of cemeteries. It is adjacent to another San Francisco suburb, Daly City. That is the home of football coach John Madden. It is a small world after all.

    RIP Mr. O Brien..
