Microsoft brains to turn refrigerators into ‘smart device boxes’

Posted by | September 3, 2016 21:00 | Filed under: Planet

Refrigerators aren’t just for cooling anymore.

The US technology giant and Liebherr are collaborating on a new “SmartDeviceBox” that take the kitchen appliance beyond cooling comestibles to reminding people what they need at the market, Microsoft principal data scientist TJ Hazen said in a blog post Friday.

The box is an internet-connected module that fits inside refrigerators and freezers.

Microsoft is putting machine vision capabilities to work to enable boxes to recognize milk cartons, ketchup bottles and other food inside refrigerators, according to Hazen.

The SmartDeviceBox uses cameras and object recognition technology to track what is in a refrigerator, keeping an inventory list, so that can be accessed through applications tailored for smartphones powered by Android, Apple or Windows software, Microsoft news center staff member Athima Chansanchai said in an online post.

Mine would mock me for having more food for my animals then for myself. I see me putting my refrigerator in the emergency room, there is only so much a person can take from their appliances!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Too much of a Buzzing Appliance could , well, maybe not, be a problem. LOL :+)

Why don’t they just build the sonic refrigerators featured in Popular Science or Popular Mechanics about 3 decades ago? Or would that save too much electric?

    • William September 4th, 2016 at 09:25

If you are referring to the ones using heat sink technology, it’s because they can only cool about 20 degrees below ambient.

      • PattyJM September 4th, 2016 at 14:14

        This is just brainstorming ….

In order to create near absolute zero researchers use a series of coolers in series. None can reach the temperatures they want but all together they can get to a tiny fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

Wouldn’t that same principle work with refrigerators? Each step would drop the temperature 20 degrees so five in series would drop the temperature 100. That’s enough to keep the freezer cold even on the hottest day.

        • William September 4th, 2016 at 14:48

I’m not familiar with that project. Was it using standard compressor technology or Peltier effect thermoelectric heat pumps? It’s pretty intriguing.

          • PattyJM September 4th, 2016 at 14:58

Sorry, but I don’t remember the details. I remember this from episode about absolute zero on Nova about ten or more years ago.

        • amersham1046 September 4th, 2016 at 17:07

cost wise, it would be cheaper to buy ice

          • PattyJM September 4th, 2016 at 22:25

            It might at that.

Seriously once the design is tested and proven to work as advertised the economies of scale enter into the equation. How many refrigerators do you think GE makes in a year? LG? Samsung? Whirlpool?

The price would come down. Of course this assumes that the idea works in the first place.

            • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 12:42

Hey, look: you’re going to discover that there are dirty g@y h0m0s all over this land! But there are still a few people who refuse to bow to the god of f@gg0try!

              • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 12:54

Sounds like you’re obsessed with gay men.

                • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 13:08

                  Does it, now, you f@gg0t?

                  • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 13:24

Yep you’re gay. Get out of that closet and enjoy your freedom. Express your Love to your man and introduce him to your family. You’ll feel much better about yourself. Otherwise all that hate is just jealousy and it’s already eati g you up.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 14:40

                      Mmm hmmm.
And the reason Vince Bugliosi prosecuted murderers is that he was a murderer. And the reason Sarah McLaughlin does those ads against animal abuse is that she kicks puppies and drown kittens.

Take your f@gg0ty “insights” elsewhere – like to prison. PeГvert.

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 14:53

                      Not at all.
But usually when men are so obsessed about consenting gay men and what they do it is because they are self loathing gays themselves.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 15:10

First of all, that’s just f@gg0t propaganda. Second, lesbians are just as sick.
All of them should be prosecuted.

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 15:25

Maybe you would be happier in Saudi Arabia or the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan.
It’s good that people who think like you are a tiny minority here.

Perhaps you should go to a bathhouse and try to meet someone.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 16:01

Hey look; I’ve known some people who were probably just as much of f@gg0ts as you are. And it’s not my fault they chose to be 5ex 0ffenders, or that you did. But if you get A1D5 and wither up and die, don’t blame those of us who tried to warn you!

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 17:07

This is how I know you are doing schtick.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 16:44

F@gg0ts are also a tiny minority, yet look at all the attention y’all have managed to get!

Anyway, the good guys usually are in the minority. And they still end up vanquishing the bad. Always.

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 17:09

That is because freedom loving people believe in protecting the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

I still think you are doing schtick.
I suspect you are gay or a gay advocate doing homophobe schtick to make them look foolish.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 17:24

Like the rights of murderers, you mean? After all, they’re in the minority. May as well defend them as long as you’re sticking up for h0m0s. Especially since a lot of h0m0s end up being (self) murderers anyway.

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 18:47

Are you out of the 3rd grade yet?

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 19:16

Thankfully, I got out long before 5ex 0ffender5 were welcomed in to promote 50d0my.

                    • OldLefty September 7th, 2016 at 19:22

So you dropped out of the 3rd grade?

                    • 7lw September 7th, 2016 at 23:22

A kid who dropped out of 3rd grade today would prove him or herself smarter than the teacher, most likely.

                    • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 17:29

                      You’re gay.

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 17:33

So I’ve heard… from f@gg0ts who think that saying that will silence people like me.

                      Epic fail, 5ex peГv.

                    • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 17:48

Nope keep talking. Now cheer with me:
Emotioncon Johnson’s GAY and that’s okay!

                    • Emoticon Johnson September 7th, 2016 at 17:51

Maybe in the original sense of the word, before s0d0mite5 stole that word to hide the true nature of their sick crimes.

Aaannnnd…there goes your IP address, as well (66.87.127.35)
                    Thanks for playing, Lance.

i was wondering what happened to him that when i got in from work there were no more stupid post to me. thanks Hi…

                    • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:09

Fool tried to come back with a different account, but the same IP address…sad, really, but Igot toban theIPaddress as well.
(mark has cautioned against doing this, as it may block people with the same IP from commenting, but those people can find out WHY their IP was banned, and act accordingly, IMO…)

                    • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 20:12

can more than one person have the same IP address?

                    • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:21

If you’re in an office building or a library for example, it’s very likely. (Think of it as your neighbor having your WiFi password…everyone coming through the same door.)

Any IT person confronted with this ban, however, can easily find out from the “webmaster”, or even from the mods, why this happened.

End result, the IP is unbanned, the user remains banned not only here, but at the innocent IP address, if the IT person is any good.
(Often, trolls with sockpuppets use a service that hides their IP address, usually giving them a 30 day trial for free. They signup and post their nonsense, not worrying about anyone tracing their comments back to them. There’s a whole industry devoted to this, and a whole branch of Homeland Security devoted to it as well.)

                    • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:31

                      As it should be.
Not to try and boost another site, but google “reddit today i learned”…there’s some crap, to be sure (it IS reddit…), but there’s some knowledge, as well.

                    • 7lw September 7th, 2016 at 23:20

Not only that, but one person can use more than one IP address.

                    • Lance Wells September 7th, 2016 at 23:19

No, thank YOU… for being such an easily vanquished opponent.

    Keep my beer cold or
    I’ll Ctrl-Alt-Delete your ass.

    • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 19:47

I’m sorry, Dave, but I don’t think you should have another beer. Can we talk about the mission? I have the utmost confidence in it….

  5. William September 4th, 2016 at 09:26

As long as they don’t put cameras in them.

  6. whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 20:08

why? just, why? does this mean that milk, orange juice, eggs, etc, won’t come with expiration dates or something?

    • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:24

Think of it like this; not only can your fridge offer suggestions as to what to cook, it can also prioritize these suggestions based on how old your ingredients are.
(Full Disclosure; eggs and dairy never even get close to their expiration dates in my house…)

      • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 20:26

(LOL at the full disclosure:) i don’t need no damn fridge telling me what to cook. i cook what i wanna cook!

        • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:28

So did I, until that fateful day when I opened the Glad container of Italian sausage that had been waiting just a bit too long…
Put me off marinara for a month, it did!

          • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 20:40

last line… cracking up laughing. well, for me, if i’ve forgotten something in the fridge that was hiding, NO WAY i’m opening that container, it’s going straight in the can. come to think of it, i’ve lost a lot tupperware that way. oh well, it happens. I DON’T WANT no fridge talking to me. enough’s enough already.

            • Hirightnow September 7th, 2016 at 20:49

              Tupperware is still a thing?
I can get 3 off-brand sealable containers of varying sizes for a dollar, and that’s not even considering storage tubs that I get gratis from the from the grocery store (margarine, lunch meat, etc.)
I’d have thought Tupperware would have given up by now.

              • whatthe46 September 7th, 2016 at 21:29

                yeah. 3 for 2.99 tupperware! LOLOL pick-a-size.
