Georgia town sending deputies to black residents’ homes to challenge voting rights

Posted by | August 1, 2016 14:27 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

The New York Times reports a voter purge directed at black residents is taking place in Hancock County, GA.

the Times reports that the Hancock County Board of Elections and Registration has been “systematically questioning the registrations of more than 180” black residents in Sparta, Georgia “by dispatching deputies with summonses commanding them to appear in person to prove their residence or lose their voting rights.”

The 180 black residents make up roughly one fifth of Sparta’s total registered voters, the Times notes.

A new lawsuit is alleging that the Hancock County Board of Elections enacted this policy to help white candidates win more elections in Sparta, although county attorney Barry Fleming told the Times that the board’s policies have nothing to do with race.

“The allegations that people were denied the right to vote are the opposite of the truth,” said Fleming, who claimed these policies were meant to restore order to the voting process after a period of supposed corruption. “This is probably more about politics and power than race.”

Even if only a small portion of people who were targeted in the probe were purged from the voter rolls, the mere fact that police officers were coming to residents’ homes to challenge their voting rights could still suppress turnout.

What a blatant racial discrimination and voting rights infringement. If these bastards are true to only just performing their duties, then let’s see how many white voters have they similarly accosted and harassed…I’d bet ZERO!

I live in a third world country and don’t witness such kind of tactics in election times… :)

”Georgia Gestapo”, sorta has a nice, proper and truthful ring to it when said.

“Show us your papers!” This is the horror that the right has released upon us and it will only get worse unless all of those who don’t support this perversion of the American culture don’t get their a$$es out and vote. If those on the left exhibit their usual lethargy and stay home, the Orange Baboon could be our next President.

we need Obama to put Lynch on this case and that’s not sarcasm. seriously, there has to be a violation here somewhere. they didn’t go into a community where “illegal immigrants” run rampit. aside from that there’s no voter fraud going on. since fuckin’ when, have we had the police going door to door knocking on the homes of any citizen requesting their appearance before a judge to validate their legal rights as legal citizens to vote in this damn country? no discrimination, then show the number of white people that were approached with a warrant to appear to validate their right to vote. and don’t show me some b.s. numbers that started because of the backlash. when you know you’ve lost and your party is shit, then it’s very clear that the repukes result to what they are best at, CHEATING.

WTF? The GOPKKK must be very concerned that polling shows Hillary could win the state. I hope the Justice Department starts investigating this now. If it is happening in one county, you can bet it’s not the only one.

I assume this is being investigated and will not be allowed to continue. I also suspect the people behind it knew they would get smacked down and didn’t care, so long as they sent a message to the ‘coloreds’.

It gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. It just never ends.
