Congressman: Whites ‘contribute more to civilization’

Iowa Congressman Steve King showed his white bona fides on MSNBC.

King, a former supporter of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), said he believes Trump has “modified” himself in this way.But Esquire’s Charles Pierce, who was also on the panel, noted the GOP convention didn’t have much diversity.

“If you’re really optimistic, you can say that this is the last time that old white people will command the Republican Party’s attention, its platform, its public face,” Pierce said.

“That hall is wired by loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people,” he added.

But King pushed back: “I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about?

“Where did any other sub-group of people contribute more to civilization?”

When MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes pressed King, asking if he meant “white people,” King said: “Than, than Western civilization itself.

“It’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That’s all of Western civilization.”

” “It’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That’s all of Western civilization.” ” — White Christian people keeping ‘others’ beaten down. – I don’t call that contributing to civilization, that’s more like a hindrance. Just think where we could be now if we had been cooperating and promoting equality instead.

He’s preaching a theology I’ve heard in Evangelical circles for decades. It’s a highly-spiritualized version of Manifest Destiny. I think I first heard it from Francis Schaeffer.

It’s the most shallow kind of history revisionism: they argue that democracy came from the Bible rather than Greece and Rome.

This statement could easily be a plank of the Republican platform.

Clearly, world history is not King’s strong suit, as he is clueless about the importance and positive impact of ancient Egypt, China, and the Muslim world on modern civilization.

Everybody contributes — some just do it better.

    Blacks: BB King
    Whites: Pat Boone

    Blacks: Martin Luther King.
    Whites: Ted Cruz

    Blacks: Jazz
    Whites: Hair Metal

    Blacks: jambalaya
    Whites: hot dish

    Blacks: Maya Angelou
    Whites: Ann Coulter

    I could go on…

Seriously: this is such a ridiculous debate. Yes, of course, Europeans have contributed the most to their own culture – some very bad and a lot very good. (Most of us — not so much)

But to interpret this as white supremacy is just idiotic.

If we lived in sane times, this congressman would resign in shame.

It’s a laughable rewrite of history that I have heard for decades in Evangelical circles.

They claim that democracy originated in the bible, not Greece and Rome.

Don’t get me wrong — I love the bible. I’ve literally spent years studying it.

But it’s not democratic! It’s theocratic.

China was already civilised when most, if not all, other human beings on earth were still living in the caves over a thousand years before.
