Christie spins: She plagiarized only 7%

CLEVELAND — Gov. Chris Christie was forced to switch roles from prosecutor to defense attorney on Tuesday morning, defending Melania Trump from accusations of plagiarizing a big part of her speech to the Republican National Convention the night before. Appearing on NBC’s ” Today” show, the governor was asked if, given the word-for-word lifting of lines…

  2. Tommie July 19th, 2016 at 10:49

The speech she gave should have been original in the first place!

  3. William July 19th, 2016 at 10:58

Krispie sold out his dignity, credibility and political future for a shot at the GOP VP slot, he should just quietly fade away.

Just another reason not to vote for Rump!

    • StoneyCurtisll July 19th, 2016 at 11:00

      Do we need another one?…
      I dont..:)

I could see voting for Melania’s “Rump” but not Donald’s.

She only married him for his money. Yes…she is hot!

  5. StoneyCurtisll July 19th, 2016 at 10:59

One would think a “Billionaire” could afford better speech writers for his wife…
But reading the words off of a teleprompter is probably not easy for someone whose hardest job is looking good, and walking the walk in 10 inch heels down the fashion show runway..
I’m sure Malania had no idea that what she was reading partially came from a speech the current First lady said nearly 8 years ago…

    • The Original Just Me July 19th, 2016 at 11:27

They claim she wrote the speech, Yea Right . She isn’t required to have enough brains to do that.

  6. Snick1946 July 19th, 2016 at 11:03

I wonder if Trump was aware what Christie said. Fat boy may have talked himself right out of any important role in the campaign.

    • William July 19th, 2016 at 11:05

Trump was simply using Christie. When Christie was a U S attorney he prosecuted and convicted the father of Trumps son in law. Christie would happily pick up Trumps dry cleaning if ordered to do so. New Jersey really deserves better.

I didn’t know he ever had one. And if he did he lost it when he spoke about melania and down played her theft.

  7. whatthe46 July 19th, 2016 at 11:19

Its only ok when they do it.

  8. labman57 July 19th, 2016 at 11:38

So she only plagiarized Michelle’s speech a little, and Melania did a beautiful job reading from the teleprompter, so it’s all good.

    • TiredOldGuy July 19th, 2016 at 11:46

So, is 7% the magic cutoff? Anything less than that is okay?
How about lies? If we hold Donnie to a 7% limit on lies, how will he communicate?

  9. Suzanne McFly July 19th, 2016 at 11:40

I wish Lauer asked christie how he felt about rumps choice of Pence. That would of been a mess to clean up, but I would of laughed for days.

  10. Chip01 July 19th, 2016 at 11:42

The GOP will write into their platform the most anti-gay agenda, and then celebrate their Dofus by having him crawl out onto the stage playing a song written/sung by a gay man.

Sadly, the GOPs lack of scruples continue to amaze everyone..

  11. Laura911 July 19th, 2016 at 11:50

    AHAHAHAHAHA!
But she plagiarized that 7% almost 100%.

      He. He.

I teach this stuff and, the ugly truth is, only the dumb plagiarists get caught.

    • fredoandme July 19th, 2016 at 13:31

i was told there would be no maths.

  12. Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 11:56

Alan Colmes “forgot” to mention that plagiarizing ONLY occurs when one CLAIMS someone else’s words as one’s own – the mere use of them does not qualify !

WIKI – “Plagiarism is the “wrongful appropriation” and “stealing and publication” of another author’s “language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions” and the representation of them as one’s own original work”

See the ending. “representation of them as one’s own”

I doubt this was a misstep by Alan who is in the professions of writing and editorializing and should know better. But I won’t put stupidity out of the question either.

    • Larry Schmitt July 19th, 2016 at 12:14

She didn’t attribute the words to their source, so the claim of originality is implied.

      • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 12:32

You don’t have to cite the source for every single saying or phrase originally created by others. That’s absurd. How many time have you use the phrase “calling the kettle black” without citing who wrote them ?

How is it implied ? The fact she used them ? Isn’t there at least some proof need that she did actually take the phrases from others and not merely that they were the same ?

        • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 12:42

Oh, c’mon, you are sounding desperate.

Have you heard the two speeches, side-by-side?

It’s not just plagiarism. It’s foolish plagiarism.

          • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 12:49

Well Mensa , you can look up the definition of plagiarism too if you want.

It will NOT say that merely using words or phrases that others wrote (even if you know they are written by others) is plagiarism UNLESS their is claim by you that they are your own.

And I wonder how many sayings you used in your comments before without citing who wrote them even though you knew others did ?

            • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 12:55

You’re splitting hairs like strip mall lawyer.

Why are you defending the indefensible?

Even I am willing to give Melania a pass on this. I can’t imagine she wrote that speech.

Just admit that some speech writer lifted a whole passage from Michelle Obama’s speech and move on.

              • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 12:56

I suspect I know why you won’t just be honest on this one.

Melania’s speech was one of the few speeches that wasn’t ugly, dark and fear mongering.

Why? Because it came from a Democrat!

                • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 13:13

Because people are lying that she plagarized. I will admit she used them and didn’t tell us.

Plagiarism is a far worse claim to make of others

                  • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 13:15

                    Howard,

But this is clear plagiarism. It’s not even a close call.

They aren’t lying when they say that. They are using the word and concept in the normal way everybody does.

                  • whatthe46 July 19th, 2016 at 18:07

Guess not only do you not mind a hateful pos like tRump in the WH but having an ex-porn star and immigrant as first lady is fine as well.

                  • bpollen July 20th, 2016 at 03:30

“I will admit she used them and didn’t tell us.”

Weird… you both ADMIT and DENY plagiarism in the same post. Makes me think of a phrase that, unlike Melania, I attribute to the author:

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

                    – Lewis Carroll

He could be writing about you.

                • fredoandme July 19th, 2016 at 13:27

oh, i am so applauding you right now.

              • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 13:11

That’s because words have meaning ! And if you are willing to tweak the meaning merely for your political benefit, then that is a very sad commentary on you.

She did write the speech, didn’t she ? whether she cited others or not.

                • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 13:17

                  >> That’s because words have meaning

And “plagiarism” is the correct word for this speech.

Did you go to college? If you had been caught doing this, you would have been busted for plagiarism. Not some other word.

                  • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 13:21

Then any time you have used the expression “calling the kettle black” without citing who wrote it is also plagiarism !

                    Now that is obviously absurd

                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism

                    You can read the article.

By reading this persons post, I find it hard to believe they passed high school. I have worked in high schools and we show students multiple times and in multiple ways what is considered plagiarism, and they know how to cite the statements and what would require a citation. It seems as if Howard does not understand this simple concept.

            • Larry Schmitt July 19th, 2016 at 13:02

“the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.”
Some of the key phrases were almost word for word from someone else’s speech. Not a common phrase used by everyone.

              • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 13:07

Even your definition says “the practice” implying an intent to steal other’s words rather than merely borrowing them.
It also states “passing them off as one’s own” … implying the actual claim that they are yours. There is a big distinction between using someone else phrase and passing them off as one’s own

The mere use of them is not plagiarizing. I can’t count the number of time I’ve heard democrats use the Kennedy phrase “ask not..” without mentioning Kennedy at all or saying it was written by someone else.

                Read the WIKI link.

                • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 13:20

                  >> rather than merely borrowing them.

A am having a hard time taking you seriously on this one.

She didn’t “borrow” a word, like “values” or “hope” or something. She lifted a whole passage, phrase-for-phrasew, sentence-for-sentence.

That is what everybody calls plagiarism, regardless of what a a wiki might say.

                • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou July 19th, 2016 at 13:25

“Read the Wiki link.” I think I’ve found your problem.

                • Larry Schmitt July 19th, 2016 at 13:25

When you “borrow” someone else’s words, you credit the source. When you don’t credit the source, it’s stealing, aka plagiarism. And the fact that she gave a speech that was widely assumed to be hers, she was “passing it off as her own.”

              • Mensa Member July 19th, 2016 at 13:13

                Larry,

I’m not kidding when I say this — I really do teach plagiarism avoidance.

This is not even a close call — it’s blatant plagiarism.

(In the academic world, you need to cite your source even if it’s paraphrased.)

Too bad Trumps speech writer didn’t take my class. In a non-academic setting like this convention, it would have been so easy to borrow the tone of Michelle Obama’s speech, without using the exact words, and avoid all of this.

Honestly, it makes me wonder about the basic intelligence of whoever did this.

        • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou July 19th, 2016 at 13:21

You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. No, no citation is needed for “calling the kettle black.” One, because it is an idiom in wide use. Two, nobody knows who said it first.
Melania Trump’s speech went much further than appropriating a simple, often used phrase.
And if no citation is given, it is assumed that the author is presenting it as their original work. People with educations, the kind not retrieved from the bottom of a cereal box, are well versed in these matters. Hell, any freshman English 101 student knows more about the issue than you do.

But she claimed SHE wrote the speech in an interview with Matt Lauer.
Trump also claimed she wrote it and tweeted out that it was HER speech…
The speech was published on the RNC site, Trump’s campaign site, and countless news sites claiming it was HER original work…it wasn’t…:(

      Now what…?

      • Howard Pearce @HAPlibertarian July 19th, 2016 at 13:24

Mike, she DID write the speech … didn’t she ? Are you saying that statement means ALL sayings and phrases she used she is claiming as hew own ?

        Over-reach

        • Mike July 19th, 2016 at 13:30

So you’re now admitting she did indeed plagiarize the speech but are now also accusing Trump of being responsible…???
          Ok, if you say so…

  13. Larry Schmitt July 19th, 2016 at 11:56

Reminds me of the old joke. Guy asks a woman, “Would you go to bed with me for a million dollars?” “Sure,” came the enthusiastic reply. “Would you go to bed with me for a dollar?” “Of course not, what kind of woman do you think I am?” “We’ve already established that, we’re just haggling over the price.”
So now Christie admits she plagiarized, but only a little.

This has been fun but I gotta go.

Here is the loose end of this kerfuffle:

    Who wrote that speech?

If it was a staffer, no big deal. Just fire the person and move on.

But why the bluster and denials? Something doesn’t smell right.

(and, to avoid plagiarism, Thom Hartmann mentioned something similar although I did wonder about this earlier. Obviously, Melania is not to blame for this. And, I can’t imagine Donald writing something so coherent. So why the embarrassing denials?)

  17. amersham1046 July 19th, 2016 at 18:13

She only plagiarized 7%, the other 93% she just copied
