THREE POLICE OFFICERS, ONE SUSPECT DEAD IN BATON ROUGE

Posted by | July 17, 2016 11:24 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

Three officers are dead.

— One suspect is dead, and two others may be at large
— Police are looking for anyone wearing army fatigues, all black or possibly a mask

Seven officers have been wounded.

Police received a call of “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle,” the source said. When police arrived, the man opened fire.

The remaining officers are hospitalized in critical condition, the source said.

The search is on for those responsible.

Kip Holden, mayor of East Baton Rouge Parish, told CNN that “three officers are feared dead.”

A witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Police closed the streets between the police department’s headquarters and Interstate 12.

WAFB-TV reported officers were shot along Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway, but didn’t specify the number of police.

Michael Vinsanau of WBRZ tweeted that more than a dozen marked and unmarked police cars have sped to the scene, and that a SWAT team is on location. State police armed with rifles are posted blocks away, Vinsanau tweeted.

    Sadly…wash…rinse…repeat…

  2. Mensa Member July 17th, 2016 at 11:44

We have a sheriff here in Oregon (John Hanlin) who is against gun control. I wonder how he sleeps at night his fellow cops are getting slaughtered by military-style weapons?

    • crc3 July 17th, 2016 at 12:49

      Some people have no conscience…

  3. StoneyCurtisll July 17th, 2016 at 11:52

Sounds like the the shooting of police that happened in Las Vegas…
Anti Government and Tea Bagger placed Gadsdan flag and Swastika on officers they killed, then went to Walmart, murdered again, and were killed by police…
This is the TEA party fanaticism…

Where is the Trump outrage over domestic terrorism?

    • amongoose July 17th, 2016 at 11:57

3 dead, 4 injured by local reports.

Maybe you better wait for a little more info before you jump.
Pray the perps are white, this is what will cost you the election if they aren’t.

        >> Pray the perps are white, this is what will cost you the election if they aren’t.

Thanks for at least admitting that Black Lives Matter are making a valid point.

        Sorry Goose…
        I don’t pray…

      • StoneyCurtisll July 17th, 2016 at 12:32

Yeah 3 dead others wounded by a white couple who were anti-government TEA party extremist…
Not only did they kill cops, they also killed a “good guy with a gun” who tried to intervene…(good guy with gun dead)….
If only there was a good guy with a gun….(that didn’t/did take 5 bullets in the ribs from the bad girl) maybe only 3 people would have died, and not the total of 5

    • Ron Theison July 17th, 2016 at 13:11

Don’t try to change the subject. None of these cop killings in Dallas and now Baton Rouge were done by Tea Partiers. They were done by radical blacks egged on by many in authority. The fact is, Alton Sterling was a convicted felon with a gun, he did not submit to arrest and he got his ass shot. That as they say, is the end of the story.

Where do you send things to, when your heart aint got no room?

    • Mensa Member July 17th, 2016 at 12:15

      For me, it’s God.

No snark. I’m serious. (I know this isn’t for everybody.)

  5. Mensa Member July 17th, 2016 at 12:20

Well, I gotta go but I’ll leave with this —

I have compassion in my hearts for all victims of gun violence. Not just cops. Not just blacks. Not just people I like. All victims.

It’s why I’m for gun control. Gun violence is out-of-control and unacceptable.

  6. Obewon July 17th, 2016 at 12:22

Everyday in the USA 92 are killed by gunslaves. “33,636 U.S. firearm deaths were recorded in 2013 — or 92 a day, on average.”-True HRC. https://everytownresearch.org/gun-violence-by-the-numbers/

2/3 of all homicides are caused by the mere 22% of Americans personally owning a firearm, down from a high of 31 percent in 1985. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/gun-ownership-declining-general-social-survey-shows-n320666

A plurality of 46% Americans now know more guns make USA Less Safe. GOP are ignorant. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1418423c17ed6d23d4c383b64c32d7b68d66dae5751ca732bfdaae54f5a161d8.gif

    • Ron Theison July 17th, 2016 at 13:20

When seconds count, the police are minutes away. There is no legal requirement for the police to protect the individual citizen. You want to rely on the police fine, but don’t try to take away other people’s right to defend themselves with a firearm.

      • Larry Schmitt July 17th, 2016 at 13:26

The overwhelming majority of gun owners never have occasion to use them for self-defense. They are much more likely to “accidentally” shoot themselves or someone else. And since many of them have no training, they have no idea what to do with their guns in an emergency.

      • Obewon July 17th, 2016 at 13:31

Obviously you’re too dim to understand that your NRA enables terrorists.
Clinton42’s Assault Weapons Ban was supported by living presidents Bush Sr, Reagan, Ford and Clinton. An AWB isn’t a ban to “take away other people’s right to defend themselves”-Delusional faux news believer. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/647ab52c11f24f318c12be947974dbd085c4044821af91e9481651c6e1751b13.jpg

      • granpa.usthai July 17th, 2016 at 14:55

maybe police officers should be allowed to carry firearms then?

      • Red Mann July 17th, 2016 at 15:14

Much more often than not people with guns to “protect” themselves end up killing innocent people, like a family member coming home late, someone at the wrong house, or some kid finds their gun laying around, loaded, with safety off and kills themselves or someone else. Only deluded fools think that owning a gun is a good form of protection.

    • Suzanne McFly July 17th, 2016 at 13:27

If guns made us safer, we would be the safest country on the planet. However, guns do not make us safer (obvious in the graph you posted), and therefore America is one of the most violent “first world” countries to live in. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0c3a9bf0dc964971055c4708a90ac711459279a43cbac11f88ed1be602103440.jpg

      • Larry Schmitt July 17th, 2016 at 13:27

More guns = more opportunities to be shot.

        • Suzanne McFly July 17th, 2016 at 13:30

Why doesn’t the NRA or the republican party realize this? How are lives less important than the money they make off gun manufacturers? How much damn money does a gun manufacturer have anyway? How can they afford to own the richest country in the world? It does not add up to me.

          • Red Mann July 17th, 2016 at 15:07

Because, for far too many, money is the ONLY thing.

            • Suzanne McFly July 17th, 2016 at 17:13

What a waste of a life.

              • Red Mann July 17th, 2016 at 17:45

One of the few things in the Bible I wholeheartedly agree with is:
                1 Timothy
6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows

  7. Tommie July 17th, 2016 at 13:02

This isn’t helping, it’s just going to make the cops more likely to shoot more people and will get more time paid off! They will say “Look what’s going on out there they are shooting at us, how will we be able to perform our jobs?” It also could be people who want to start trouble but cops do need to start respecting citizens because some do fu*k up! Imo!

    • Suzanne McFly July 17th, 2016 at 13:21

Exactly Tommie, I feel sick. We could of done something about this blue on black crime organization but then Dallas happened and the Black Lives Matter message was lost again. I can’t help but wish the suspects in this crime are white. We need to stay on focus on the original message which is cops do not have the right to assume a person of color is guilty and they will be justified in murdering them.

  8. Ron Theison July 17th, 2016 at 13:07

It is time President Obama comes out unequivocally on the side of the police here in America. We do not need any more excuses from him on behalf of the people who are committing such deeds. No more references to slavery or Jim Crow laws and the negative rhetoric from him, other black “leaders” and groups like BLM must stop. All that stuff does is breed more hatred and eggs these cop killers on. Enough is enough!

    • Larry Schmitt July 17th, 2016 at 13:07

And of course that will magically stop the shootings of police.

      • StoneyCurtisll July 17th, 2016 at 14:18

        “thanks Obama”…..:)

“It is time President Obama comes out unequivocally on the side of the police here in America…”

It’s time right-wing demagogues stop blaming the elected president for acts of violence by people he had clearly condemned. We don’t need any more excuses from these hateful radicals on the far right. No more ridiculous references to “tyranny”, no more “Obama is coming to take away your guns”, no more “Obama is anti-cop”, etc., this stuff must stop. All this rhetoric does is increase more hatred and egg on right-wing extremists who have killed roughly the same number of Americans as jihadists since 9/11. Enough is enough!

No offense, but it sounds like you need to get on the side of your president who has unequivocally been on the side of LEO first…any statements you allude to were simply made after the facts were a bit clearer.
You are in essence asking the president to do what you refuse to do … not judge something before it happens…

He did come out in support of cops, the good ones, the ones that don’t get away with murder. The lies about BLM are getting old, tiresome and annoying. You think that we can just wish away hundreds of years of the abuse of blacks and everything will be all better? You pathetic, ignorant fool, it is people like you that are the problem.

    • OldLefty July 17th, 2016 at 15:45

You have to come out on the side of law, no matter who that favors.
That is what Obama have always done.
And by the way, Dallas is what a ‘2nd Amendment remedy’ would look like.

If the nra bought politicians hadn’t blocked his way (completely unlawful disregarding his 2nd Amendment Right to keep and bear Nuclear Arms)
the shootings would most likely had never taken place.

just goes to show what happens when people are misinformed as to their REAL Constitutional Rights by a bunch of money grubbers acting strictly for nra profit!

  10. StoneyCurtisll July 17th, 2016 at 13:32

If this was in Texas… The “open carry with an AR-15 ” would just have been another person walking down the street”…Right?

    • granpa.usthai July 17th, 2016 at 14:39

depends on how colorful the skin they were wearing.

    • Um Cara July 17th, 2016 at 16:39

No, it would be very unusual to see a person walking down the street with an AR-15. I live in Texas, and I’ve never seen a person doing it (in real life, I have seen it on the news).

      • StoneyCurtisll July 18th, 2016 at 10:49

Thank you for setting me straight….
What I see on the internet my only reference point….:)

  11. eyelashviper July 17th, 2016 at 13:35

The entire country is flaming hot, not just in temps, but in anger, which has been fanned to the flash point, and continues daily. Words have power, and along with our first amendment right to free speech, there are responsibilities and consequences to words; the rhetoric coming from the Trump campaign has been nothing short of inciting people to commit violent acts.
Throw in massive armaments, available to anyone with a pulse and cash, and we will only see more and more of this…Perhaps everyone should do a little review of history, especially the 1960’s, and see how well such hatred and violence worked out for our country.

    • FDRliberal July 17th, 2016 at 13:46

“The entire country is flaming hot, not just in temps, but in anger, which has been fanned to the flash point, and continues daily.”

In this climate, I feared that the Dallas killings might be repeated. These reprehensible cop killers are not only murdering innocent people doing their jobs, but gravely harming a peaceful protest movement and those who want to fight police brutality.

In this climate we must have leaders who call for calm. I am thankful Obama is the president, but unfortunately the Republican nominee is a racist demagogue who will no doubt further fan the flames of hatred in order to gain more votes.

      • eyelashviper July 17th, 2016 at 13:58

Agree, Obama has been the calm one, the adult in the room, while the rage from the right has encouraged people to act out their anger and disagreements. The actual words of Trump are outrageous, irresponsible, and he needs to be called out by all good people, starting with the impotent press.

  12. Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 14:06

Sounds like the occupying army in Baton Rouge is taking some fire in today’s War on The People. Couldn’t have anything to do with their fascist response to protesters, could it? Or could it be because of their repeated killing of citizens with no accountability? Doesn’t really matter anymore.
    Which side are you on?

    • Um Cara July 17th, 2016 at 14:20

      Which side are you on?

I’m definitely not on the side of people who kill police officers in these united states, so easy choice.

      • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 14:53

and I applaud your altruism and smile and shake my head at your naivete.
I wonder, would you feel the same if it had been your son or daughter killed by these fascists?

I applaud your altruism and smile and shake my head at your naivete.

          Shake it baby, shake.

I wonder, would you feel the same if it had been your son or daughter killed by these fascists?

If my son or daughter were killed by one or more police officers, I doubt I would have much sympathy for the officers who killed him/her. I also doubt I would support killing random police officers in retaliation for the act. But then, I’m not a violent kook.

          • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 17:42

            ah, an ad-hominem attack.
the great refuge of minds that wish things to be simple. always encourages further discourse. .
I’ve been fighting for peace for longer than you’ve probably been alive. I do not advocate violence and murder, but neither do I call it something else when I see it.

            • Um Cara July 17th, 2016 at 18:10

              ah, an ad-hominem attack.

Negatory, no ad-hominem attack on you. I think folks who shoot random police offices are violent kooks. I think folks who support the killing of random police officers violent kooks.

I am almost certain you are not in the first category, and no information that you are in the second category.

I was just answering your question. You seem pretty sensitive, I’d offer you a hug and a cookie if you were near by. (((virtual hug))) (((virtual cookie)))

              • whatthe46 July 17th, 2016 at 18:19

those who shoot random cops are violent kooks and cops who shoot random people of color, or rather, execute random people of color are violent kooks as well. quite frankly it’s easier to identify the violent “cops” the department is complicit in the murders and execution of the citizens when they do absolutely nothing to get rid of those they know have issues.

                • Um Cara July 17th, 2016 at 18:21

Lots of violent kooks among we humans. No doubt.

      • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 14:39

This is not a public police force we are dealing with, it is an occupying army who is out there to support only the 1% and kill the 99% if they object. And it has been for a very long time.

          • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 15:36

You shut down all possibility of discourse when you assume my position and put words in my mouth. I NEVER said shooting back is a solution, but I DID SAY I can understand it as a reaction. Your jump to an erroneous conclusion is indicative of one of the major stumbling blocks to getting us over this extreme polarization. You read, but only comprehend what you already want to comprehend.
When a foreign force occupies your neighborhood and murders people with impunity, shooting back seems like a logical response to me. Not a solution, just a sad reality. Such is war.

That’s not his position I gather.

                    • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 16:13

you are not reading with comprehension then; that is EXACTLY my position.

i think he’s just very upset, but i can say he’s not for shooting cops.

            • Gina Bousquet July 17th, 2016 at 15:53

You’ve been advocating war since your first comment, EVEN ASKED WICH SIDE OF THE WAR WERE WE ON, you got the nerve to say I’m putting words in your mouth.

              • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 15:58

No, you mistake reportage for advocacy. I SEE war where it already exists. It seems YOU however are polyanna-blind to it because it doesn’t fit in with your privileged upbringing to believe the good ol’ US of A could be anything but just. Well wake up and smell the coffee: we the lower classes are under attack and have been for a long time.

                • Gina Bousquet July 17th, 2016 at 16:01

What you’re doing is not reportage, which side are you on leaves two choices– killing cops or siding with them– that’s what your speech is offering. BLM for instance is neither. You want war.

                  • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 16:03

how very Aristotelian of you to only see two diametrically opposed choices. All black and white, no grey at all, huh. Must be nice to have a life that is so well defined. Oops, your privilege is showing!
Asking a question is NOT advocacy!

                    • Gina Bousquet July 17th, 2016 at 16:06

You don’t know what you’re talking about, I don’t have a life of privilege. BLM is the opposite of diametrically opposed choices, BTW

                    • Guy Lauten July 17th, 2016 at 16:07

then I will have to explain it with ignorance. My error.

          • whatthe46 July 17th, 2016 at 15:50

i don’t think he believes that random shooters are a solution, but you cannot be surprised when these things happen. they are going about it the wrong way, but, for some enough is enough. and it has nothing to do with the BLM movement, these are lone individuals who have take it upon themselves to target an institution that seems to not want to or just don’t care to change the way their departments are ran or how murdering cops are handled. when there is clear cut video taped evidence of an execution and suspension with pay is the punishment and often, too many times, not even charges are brought against them, that just might piss the wrong person off. and when it happens within 24 hours of one another, then you’ve got yourself a problem.

Let’s keep it in perspective, people. The media always sensationalizes these events. The fact is that a typical American is twice as safe today as they were in 1993.

Not being surprised with the occurrence of escalating violence is one thing, asking us to take sides is another. I don’t side with murderers on either side of that situation.

    • crc3 July 17th, 2016 at 16:53

Cops need to be treated with respect HOWEVER I have zero respect for any of them that kill an unarmed or nonthreatening individual then is given special treatment or immunity from prosecution. In fact, if anything, cops who do such acts should be prosecuted more severely than a normal citizen would be…

      • whatthe46 July 17th, 2016 at 17:05

it has become their fault that they are not respected by a great deal of people. if you continue to cover for bad behavior, then you ARE THE PROBLEM not the people you’re suppose to protect.

        Agreed!
