Press for release Trump’s video testimony in Trump U lawsuit

Posted by | July 13, 2016 13:42 | Filed under: Politics

Media organizations are pressing for release of Donald Trump’s videotaped testimony in the Trump University lawsuit.

Lawyers for Trump are resisting public disclosure of the videos, warning that such a move will make them fodder for use in the presidential campaign and could undermine Trump’s fair trial rights by making it hard to find an impartial jury.

Beyond the question of the videos, the Wednesday afternoon hearing in federal court in San Diego will be the first court session devoted to the Trump University suits since late May, when Trump used a campaign rally in the same city to deliver a 12-minute rant against the judge overseeing the suits.

Trump referred to U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born in Indiana, as “Mexican” and “a hater of Donald Trump.” The presidential candidate also called for an investigation of the judge and for him to recuse himself, although Trump’s lawyer has brought no motion to do that.

Many Democrats and even some top GOP leaders publicly rebuked Trump over his verbal attacks on the judge, bluntly calling them “racist.”

I think they have a good chance with this argument. Releasing a deposition during an election would have nothing but a disruptive effect. It’s practically common knowledge that whatever is in the depo is going to destroy him.

The fact that he went on a cross-country judge-bashing tour makes me think the argument isn’t apt to carry much weight. How can you claim that the case you have spoken extensively about AS a presidential candidate, characterizing it as an unfair trial BECAUSE OF YOUR STATED POLICIES TOWARD ANOTHER COUNTRY IF YOU WERE ELECTED, should be protected from people talking about it WHILE you are a presidential candidate? He injected the case into his campaign, and now is trying to immunize his campaign from the case he himself injected into the campaign.

Trump opened the door, but thinks only HE can go through it.

You may be right. We’ll have to see. I certainly would love to see it go forward right now.
