Johnson beats Trump among millennials

Posted by | July 11, 2016 16:54 | Filed under: Politics

Among millennials, Hillary Clinton is polling at 47%, Gary Johnson at 22% and Donald Trump at 21% in a Pew survey.

Hillary Clinton holds an identical nine-point edge over Trump in a head-to-head general election question (51%-42%) as well as in a general election question that names libertarian candidate Gary Johnson (45%-36%; 11% support Johnson). Patterns of support for Trump and Clinton across demographic groups are similar in both versions of the general election preference question. Johnson’s strongest performance is among younger voters: 22% of 18-29 year olds say they would vote for him when his name is offered. By comparison, just 6% of voters 50 and older would back Johnson.

As a young punk I too was a libertarian. I was naive, I thought folks could generally be counted on to do the right thing. Life taught me that big groups of people like to jack with small groups of people, powerful people like to jack with non powerful people and thus reasonably robust government is necessary to protect the little guy.

I suspect many of these Millennials will grow out of their Libertarianism too. A pretty high percentage of them are libertarian because of drug policy. With the changes to the D platform (thanks Bernie!) on cannabis policy the Democrats may even be able to snag a bigger percentage of these ‘Libertarians’ than represented in this poll.

I informed a few Millennials about the new stance the Democratic party adopted and I am pretty sure I gained a few new votes for Hillary :)

I can’t afford to give you a prize for your good deed.

        This I can afford: ???

I appreciate your acknowledgement, that is something you can’t buy.

Well… maybe we could make a deal? ?

Teenage Libertarians are perfectly understandable – they tend not to see shades of gray, only black and white. The really sad ones are the adults. Need I point out that one of the Losers of the Libertarian Convention did a strip tease in protest? Think Chris Christie with a beard and Speedo…

He’s a great speaker, sounds reasonable and open minded…and of course there’s the weed thing…what’s not to like…???
But it’s a kind of like rich republicans on steroids when you get down to it…sorta like ” I used the system to get where I am, but I could have done it anyway…now you should struggle to build character” ….no thanks

Yeah, he seems like a likeable guy…

But he’s on the left of Hillary on a lot of social issues, while simultaneously being waaaaaaaay to the right of the Republicans on the economy. The usual “I got mine, screw you” economic posture. As he himself said, he wants “Uber” everything. So, marijuana would be legalized, but nobody would be able to afford it. Take the current state of inequality, kick it up a couple notches a la Emeril, and you are approaching Libertarian Economic Zen.

And all the poor and middle-class Libertarians are going to be saying “This is NOTHING like the brochure!”

all ya have to do is legalize weed…they would forget Johnson in a second, they would get the munchies and move back into mom and dad’s basement…like my kid did…oh wait, that was me…the years have not been kind…
