Robots could replace migrant workers

This could be yet another fallout from the Brexit vote.

According to a new report from the Resolution Foundation, shortfalls in the human workforce could lead to a surge in robots to take their place.

It highlights that key industries which could see an increasing rise of the machines could be agriculture, food manufacture and food and drink services – all of which are large employers of low skilled workers from the continent.

Close to one-third of workers in the food manufacturing are EU migrants, according to the Financial Times, with more than one in eight employed in areas such as warehousing and textile manufacture.

While the ramifications of the UK’s exit are unclear, they could see restrictions placed on the movement of workers.

The Think-tank report says that such changes could potentially offer new opportunities for automation to counter economic disruption and boost the UK’s flagging productivity.
