Lesbian couple still threatened 3 years after trying to buy cake

All Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer wanted to do was buy a wedding cake.

…the lesbian couple became faces of the marriage equality movement, culminating last year in the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling, which legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

The Oregon couple approached Sweet Cakes by Melissa in 2013 seeking a wedding cake, but were refused service. The bakers, Aaron and Melissa Klein, said they refused to do so due to their Christian religion, which propelled them to something of a martyr status in the conservative religious community.

In the end the state forced the Kleins to pay a total of $136,927.07 — $135,000 plus interest — for emotional distress they caused the Bowman-Cryers.

But the Bowman-Cryers just wanted a cake, according to the Oregonian. Instead, three years later, they are still bombarded with death threats and hate-filled messages and haven’t yet been able to cash out on the fine the cake makers owed them because it’s hung up in a government account.

The couple continue to receive ugly messages and threats:

“I am buying up my ammo right now you filthy, ugly, disgusting, fat, stupid, cruel, anti-Christian piece of liberal scum,” Rachel read aloud. “I am getting ready for the war so I hope you have a good hiding place, you sick, disgusting, miserable, piece of degenerate lesbian scum.”

Another read, “Filthy dirt bag. You are ruining this country, and we will not let you do it.”

I can’t imagine what it would take to influence me to threaten someone with death. Even when I have no intention of carrying it out. And certainly this isn’t enough. But the other expressions of pure hate are just as disturbing.

It takes very little if you’re stupid. It’s happened to me on Yahoo a couple of times.

Yes, we see pure hate from radical gays towards Christians all the time. Why couldn’t these two respect the Christian bakers?

Personally I don’t understand why they didn’t just leave and find a baker who would serve them. But if everyone did that all the time, nothing would change. People would continue to get away with discrimination. And that doesn’t excuse the death threats the couple were receiving.

    Christian tolerance at it’s best.

      Gay tolerance at it’s best.

I am guessing you are completely unfamiliar with this story. The couple had done considerable business with the bakery in the past, including a wedding cake. The couple did not sue, they filed a complaint with the state’s regulating agency as the refusal was based on discrimination and completely illegal in Oregon.

The bakery publicly outed the couple, damaging their chances at an adoption and made the couple’s life a living hell. The bakery held a business license, was fully aware of the law and chose to discriminate anyway. The couple did go to another bakery.

The real question here would be; do you think this is appropriate behavior for adults? You think it’s acceptable to threaten others with death if you disagree with their private, legal lives?

Lesbians killed Jesus, you know! Or was that Romans? Jews? Political Correctness?

Hard to keep track of the villain du jour.

“Emotional distress”, oh the poor babies! The Christian bakers messed up, they should have baked them their cake, a cake chock full of “special” ingredients mixed together just for them.
