Obama: Trump not a populist; it’s ‘nativism’ and ‘xenophobia’

Posted by | June 29, 2016 19:00 | Filed under: Politics

President Obama took a square shot at the idea that Donald Trump is some kind of populist.

Obama did not mention Trump by name during his self-described “rant” that seemed to hit the GOP candidate because he has “never shown any regard for workers, has never fought on behalf of social justice issues” and instead has “worked against economic opportunity for workers and ordinary people.”

“They don’t suddenly become a populist because they say something controversial in order to win votes,” Obama said at a press conference.

“That’s not the measure of populism. That’s nativism, or xenophobia, or worse. Or it’s just cynicism.”

Obama said his fight during his eight years in office for better healthcare and education for the underprivileged and his push to reform Wall Street shows he is the true populist.

“I care about people and I want make sure every kid in America has the same opportunities that I had,” the president said.

Great rant O…and yeah, you earned it…

The only thing Obama has cared about while in office was the “fundamental transformation” of this nation and every action he took was to that end. From gay “marriage”, to men using women’s bathrooms, to uncontrolled illegal immigration, to bringing in almost one million Muslims, to going after Christians, President Obama has regrettably achieved his goal.

Only with the election of Donald Trump as President do we have a chance to turn many of these detrimental things around. And for those to say that can’t happen, you just need to remember that most people didn’t think there would be a Brexit. There is a great silent majority in this country who are sick and tired of the elites like Obama and Clinton who claim to be “for the people” but in reality are only out for themselves. This coming November should certainly be interesting

    • OldLefty June 29th, 2016 at 20:36

      What is with this “pending”???

The only thing Obama has cared about while in office was the “fundamental transformation”

      _____

      Back to the Founding principles.

(Remember he said that Reagan also transformed the nation).

Funny how Obama is both a better Christian and a more patriotic American than most of his critics. Thank God we had a grown up in the White House.

      • Ron Theison June 29th, 2016 at 21:52

The Founding principles? Ever more Federal control at the expense of the individual states has nothing to do with our founding principles, nor is a President trying to make laws by himself not one of our founding principles either.
A better Christian, so when was the last time he attended Christian worship services? If he is such a great Christian, why has he let in Syrian Muslims by the score, but very few Christian Syrians? And why has he gone after the Little Sisters of the Poor? He is not much of a Christian if you ask me.

          Article VI, Clause 3
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Aside from the fact that your are simply parroting RW lies, Mr. Obama’s religion is irrelevant.

          • Ron Theison June 30th, 2016 at 09:18

Hey, I’m not the one who made the point that Obama was a “good Christian”.

        • fahvel June 30th, 2016 at 03:18

as one reaches the bottom of comments, yours get more moronic and become echos of people with whom you have nothing in common other than their blind sick hatred of a dark skin in a white house – racist bsterd is an effective word for ya.

        • OldLefty June 30th, 2016 at 08:05

          Of course.
The balance between states and the federal government was an ongoing controversy between the Founders, hence the supremacy clause.
Remember how Reagan expanded the federal government?

“President trying to make laws by himself “???
I have a long list of executive orders in which presidents, Eisenhower, Reagan, Bush and Bush were accused of EXACTLY the same thing.
When THEY did it, their supporters called it prosecutorial discretion.
That’s the only difference….in what you call it.
So yes, I think that Obama has kept more in the spirit of the founders than his Republican predecessors.

          Church services???
What in the world does THAT have to do with being Christian???
It is the U.N. High Commission for Refugees who does the screening.
Meanwhile, many Christians in Syria are going to Lebanon (high Christian population), while many Christians feel more protected in the Alawite strongholds.

The Little Sisters of the Poor???
By asking them to fill out a form to exempt them from the law ?

That is a part of THEIR religion that I don’t believe is very Christian, but the Obama administration tells them that all they have to do is fill out the form to be exempt.
Perhaps their refusal to do even THAT is not very Christian.

Church establishment and the Pharisees have very little to do with Christianity if you ask ME.

          • Ron Theison June 30th, 2016 at 09:26

Oh I see, it’s the UN that is doing the screening. And who on the ground is doing the actual screening? That’s right, locally employed Muslims, so it’s no wonder Christians are being excluded. But hey, I know, President Obama is just an innocent bystander in all of this and has no say in who we want to take in, right?

            • OldLefty June 30th, 2016 at 13:32

Yes it’s the UN to whom the refugees turn.
And it is not the Christians who are fleeing as much as the Muslims.
And many of the Christians DO go to Lebanon, where they are very comfortable with the Shia and the other Christians.
And it is not Obama’s job to discriminate by religion.
His job is to say how many we can take.

        • Obewon June 30th, 2016 at 09:54

All refugee applicants have their background checked repeatedly while they’re screened for 2 years+.
As you’ve been proven before: Less than 1% of refugees are approved for U.S. entry. https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2015/11/20/infographic-screening-process-refugee-entry-united-states

Just over 1,800 refugees have been admitted to the United States since the civil war in Syria began. They have been placed in about 35 states, according to a New York Times analysis. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2015/nov/19/politifact-sheet-5-questions-about-syrian-refugees/

      And by the way, Brexit has turned into Regret-xit, as the voters show us a sample of Trump voters;

Thursday; “I VOTED TO LEAVE THE EU!!!!”

      Friday; “What’s the EU?????”

            • Red Mann June 30th, 2016 at 00:40

Above is another example of what has been happening, the first comment about Ronnie’s stupidity disappeared, then reappeared.

              • whatthe46 June 30th, 2016 at 00:44

laughing. oh goodness. that’s been happening for a few days now. i’ve seen others complain.

  3. OldLefty June 29th, 2016 at 20:39

    Trump;

A billionaire trust fund baby who grew up New York City and went to elite private schools, an Ivy league college, who schmoozes with the rich and famous, including politicians, and a guest of guest of George H.W. Bush at the 1988 Republican National Convention posing as an genuine outsider”???

No wonder his scams worked so well.

  4. OldLefty June 29th, 2016 at 20:42

Why do some comments, that have no bad words, no links and are not long have to “wait for approval”?

    • whatthe46 June 30th, 2016 at 00:40

yeah, i’ve had that problem tonight as well. one was posted with no problems, then disappeared. then i asked about it and it came back. i posted “test” and it went into moderation. must be a glitch somewhere.

  5. Hirightnow June 29th, 2016 at 21:05

Into moderation because of the word “guest”.
WTF is wrong with Disqus I do not know.
    Repeat comments deleted.
    Sorry, OL.

Say, a good trick, if you use Windows, is to use the “Character map”, to replace a letter that resembles another…

            • OldLefty June 29th, 2016 at 21:19

              ??
I use a mac, (and not very well).
              I am a luddite.

              • Hirightnow June 29th, 2016 at 21:23

                Character Palette.
You get to it via Edit > Special Characters, or check its box in system prefs/international/input menu.

                Or, http://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharx/

                • Hirightnow June 29th, 2016 at 21:25

But replacing the “i” with an “!” will always work when typing “sh!t”

                • OldLefty June 29th, 2016 at 21:37

That is SO far out of my league!!!!
                  (But thanks for trying.)

                  Good night.

          • Hirightnow June 29th, 2016 at 21:12

Use this knowledge wisely…use it in peace.

    • Gina Bousquet June 29th, 2016 at 21:40

I once posted about my cats and said some of them lived in the gu!st house. I typed it in three different ways before I noticed they were pending because of that word.
