Brexit vote emboldens racists

Posted by | June 26, 2016 13:34 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

A spike in racism has followed the Brexit vote.

“I’ve spent most of the weekend talking to organisations, individuals and activists who work in the area of race hate crime, who monitor hate crime,” says Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, a former co-chair of the Conservative Party who served as Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 2012 until 2014. “They have shown some really disturbing early results from people being stopped in the street and saying look, we voted Leave, it’s time for you to leave.”

Baroness Warsi added that “they are saying this to individuals and families who have been here for three, four, five generations.”

I used to think the Brits were sophisticated pouffy shirt wearing, pinky finger tea sippers with the saucer held under the cup, kinda people..

But in fact there is a large constituency of soccer hooligans that can’t really speak English.

It almost feels good that we don’t have all the bigoted racists, it just seems like it.

    This is no surprise.
The old rural conservatives are fearful xenophobs just like the ignorant hillbillies in red states that we have to support with federal funds for decades.
When the EU subsidies stop for the old and rural areas, they’ll complain just like our wingnut base.

We all always knew they were here, but this vote and rump has given them the idea we now accept them. We need to beat them back into their closets.

Discontent and anger emboldens everybody. This is the main problem in a world with so much inequality. If you don’t like how some people vent their anger, you should try and keep the people happier. The oligarchy and the rich just don’t care about the masses and their anger issues. The rich just want more riches and more power. This seems to be a cycle that just keeps repeating throughout history. As long we let wealth and power get concentrated in a small percentage of the population, anger will arise and the dark side of human nature will show itself.

It’s time to burn the castle down and Eat The Rich.

      it does seem inevitable.

this is so disturbing on so many levels.

If you don’t look like me, you must be a furriner. Even with a British accent, that sounds racist.

We should prepare for this ourselves…win lose or draw, we’ll be a country with a very large population of angry racists…if they win, they will be unstoppable and probably drag civil rights back to the 60’s when we dealt with the “colored” by using dogs and water hoses…if they lose, it could be even worse …

    • Larry Schmitt June 26th, 2016 at 15:43

I don’t think they have enough self-awareness for that. They’ll just go back to drinking PBR in front of the tee-vee.

      • Mike June 26th, 2016 at 15:50

        You hope…

        • Larry Schmitt June 26th, 2016 at 15:51

Well, none of them were active before Drumpf came along, so I think they just slink back to their holes when he’s done.

They’re a mob now, they don’t need a leader anymore.

            • Larry Schmitt June 26th, 2016 at 15:56

But mobs without some kind of leader usually dissolve and wander away. They need someone to goad them into action.

Not sure where you live Larry but it’s a bit different in Florida…
I was in line at Walgreens last month when an impatient old a$$ redneck started screaming ” Hurry up you goddamn niqqer bitch I don’t have all day…” Mind you, I was in Riviera Beach (it’s like Harlem)
I pushed his stuff off the counter and onto the floor and asked the girl to ring me up…She did…He went off on a rant calling me a slimy spic while my son and another customer pushed him out the door…
Extreme…??? Yeah, but not all that out of the norm down here…he was the only white person in the store but felt confident enough to speak that way

It’s like the Tea Party: they were the continuation of the racist lynch mobs that were known as “McCain-Palin rallies”. They had an effect on US politics, but not as deep or long-lasting as we might have feared. History marches on, leaving the knuckle-dragging troglodytes behind.

      • mea_mark June 26th, 2016 at 15:50

That’s assuming they didn’t break the tee-vee when they were all mad and fired up.

Until we deal with inequality things are just going to get worse.

the key to all the rhetoric here is job creation & inexpensive education with affordable housing weather some or all agree. Countries have to start taking care of themselves so we don’t have to do it for them, i see this movement being more positive then negative
