Evangelicals: U.S. no longer a Christian country

Posted by | June 25, 2016 18:30 | Filed under: Politics Religion

America has lost its Christian identity, say a majority of white Christian evangelicals…

…according to a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute and Brookings Institution. This represents an 11-point jump from 48 percent in 2012. “[They] miss the Reagan era or even the Eisenhower years when, in their view, a more masculine and Christian nation commanded greater respect abroad and reflected their own white Evangelical political and cultural attitudes,” said R. Andrew Chesnut, a professor of religious studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.

It never was a Christian Nation…nope…the old guys who wrote the Constitution were explicit about that…

  2. Mike June 25th, 2016 at 18:35

What a load of bullsh!t…like we ever were a christian country…
Forget the fact most Founders were Deists, Agnostics, and even hostile toward religion…the real proof is simple….
If this were a real Christian country we would do the things Jesus preached…we’d have universal health care, a huge welfare system where no one was left behind, no military bombing and killings millions all over the planet, and a candidate supported by the religious right that is nothing more than a hateful, bigoted, A$$hat…

Now, you are saying that Christ was a Democrat. Right On !

      • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker June 25th, 2016 at 19:48

He sure as hell wasn’t one of today’s republicans.

        • Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 20:04

          So Peter was a Republican?

          • The Original Just Me June 25th, 2016 at 21:18

Would that make him Peter Publican ? :+)

        • The Original Just Me June 25th, 2016 at 21:20

It really gets me how the Republicans put down everything that Christ taught us about how to treat our fellow man.

        • Red Mann June 26th, 2016 at 00:01

          They should review Matthew 25.

      • Mike June 25th, 2016 at 19:48

According to the bible, Christ was a dem on steroids…!!!

      • Dwendt44 June 26th, 2016 at 00:58

Jesus was a liberal and a socialist.

    • fredoandme June 25th, 2016 at 21:52

agreed. and you and i aren’t the only ones.

  3. Obewon June 25th, 2016 at 18:40

But their on message signs worked so well telegraphing evilangelical ignorance!

    • Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 19:57

Jesus would treat her like the poor demented soul she is, and probably try to cast out her demons.

    • Red Mann June 25th, 2016 at 23:58

      Holy nut sacks!

    • Clementine June 26th, 2016 at 11:17

They are getting autographed Jesus pictures above, I’d prefer a framed wall copy of this. :-) Thanks for the laugh.

  4. robert June 25th, 2016 at 18:42

I hope this means we don’t have to live by cherry picked Bible verses anymore

    • bpollen June 25th, 2016 at 23:05

As if they ever cared about facts or consistency…

      • robert June 26th, 2016 at 13:51

Almost forgot to mention the Bible verses were often followed by, Do as I say Not as I do

  5. labman57 June 25th, 2016 at 18:45

America has never been a Christian nation, but it’s understandable that many people assumed it was, as Evangelicals had grown accustomed to throwing their religious mores into the faces of “non-believers” without concern for criticism or blowback.

  6. Long Tom June 25th, 2016 at 18:56

Ironically, this news is worthy of a heart-felt “Hallelujah“.

  7. KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker June 25th, 2016 at 19:12

And they say this like it’s a bad thing!?!

    • Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 20:00

      Bilbo had a better writer.

      • fredoandme June 25th, 2016 at 21:54

and wasn’t killed off in the final chapter.

      • bpollen June 25th, 2016 at 23:04

Well, the bible was written by committee, edited by committee, and then misunderstood by the vast majority.

        • Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 23:11

And translated so many times, over hundreds of years, that no one is sure anymore what the original intent of the authors was.

      • Red Mann June 25th, 2016 at 23:56

And we actually know who the writer was.

  8. The Original Just Me June 25th, 2016 at 19:22

Shssss ! Don’t let them read the First Amendment. This Nation endorses NO particular Religion.

    • Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 20:01

They think the First Amendment gives them the right to shove their (Christian) religion down everyone else’s throats. But no one else has the right to even practice theirs, or to practice none.

    • Red Mann June 25th, 2016 at 23:55

Wrong! It clearly says that Fundigelical Christians and Tealiban Republicans have the right to say anything they want and no one has the right to criticize or contradict them!!!111!!!

      • The Original Just Me June 26th, 2016 at 06:30

As long as they don’t holler FIRE in a crowed theater, or try to use OUR government to shove their ideas own my throat.

    • bpollen June 26th, 2016 at 16:12

Look for the parts written in crayon.

  9. jamesboyle63@gmail.com June 25th, 2016 at 19:54

“Evangelicals: U.S. no longer a Christian country.” Thank god!!!

    • PattyJM June 25th, 2016 at 21:24

It never was a “Christian country”. Its a country with freedom of religion written into its most basic governing body.

      • whatthe46 June 25th, 2016 at 21:25

        tell them that.

        • PattyJM June 25th, 2016 at 22:39

I do. Every chance I can.

      • Red Mann June 25th, 2016 at 23:53

Nonsense, the highly trained historian, David Barton, ensures us the Constitution was taken, verbatim, from Gawd’s own Holy Word. Also we have actual pictures of Jesus Himself handing down the Constitution. I believe it was after 40 days and 40 nights on Mount Vernon.

        • PattyJM June 26th, 2016 at 00:53

Really? Do you think I could get an autographed picture of Jesus?

          • Red Mann June 26th, 2016 at 00:57

Contact David Barton, I’m sure he has some for sale. He keeps them with all his proof America was meant to be a Christian Nation.

          • Dwendt44 June 26th, 2016 at 12:38

A few years back, you could get an autographed copy of the bible.

        • Larry Schmitt June 26th, 2016 at 06:22

That is an amazing collection of “information.” It’s an illustration of how someone can twist the facts to back up what he believes. Barton should always be referred to as a “historian.” He’s a fabulist, just like Aesop, and his fables can teach us something too. To be wary of people like Barton.

While fasting the whole time. Low blood sugar can do strange things to you.

      • Dwendt44 June 26th, 2016 at 00:55

And that includes Freedom From Religion as well.

        • Larry Schmitt June 26th, 2016 at 06:23

Especially the freedom from having other people’s religions shoved in your face.

          • The Original Just Me June 26th, 2016 at 06:33

Anyone for their praters in OUR schools ?

        • The Original Just Me June 26th, 2016 at 06:34

          Definitly

  10. Larry Schmitt June 25th, 2016 at 19:56

He’s been listening to Betty Bowers again. And as with the Onion, some people don’t recognize a joke when they see one.

  11. Chip01 June 25th, 2016 at 20:11

Evangelicals and Republicans got together and fornicated…they had a “Rosemary Baby” and named it Donald Trump.

    • whatthe46 June 25th, 2016 at 20:17

that’s some funny $hit right thar.

    • The Original Just Me June 26th, 2016 at 13:15

  16. bpollen June 25th, 2016 at 23:00

Really, that’s just a new take on an old lie. premised on the lie that our country ever was a Christian nation in order to recently become non-Christian.

Just wait until Evangelicals get to the 20th Century.

    • Guy Lauten June 25th, 2016 at 23:20

yes, it scratches their martyr itch to think their “christianity” is special and under attack. whereas in reality they are just another generation of whining, spoiled brats who think they invented this shit.

  17. spacegod June 26th, 2016 at 00:38

    Lord.

    • Clementine June 26th, 2016 at 11:09

      Amen.

      • The Original Just Me June 26th, 2016 at 13:14

Amen ? But I’m not finished yet. :+)

  18. Warman1138 June 26th, 2016 at 01:23

    Idiots…….and still delusional.

  19. granpa.usthai June 26th, 2016 at 01:25

so the ‘christian’ leaders in America will have to answer to God for losing the whole country?

    DAMN !!!

  20. PattyJM June 26th, 2016 at 04:03

The part that gets me is how the Christian right cannot see any connection between their hateful speech and the number of people leaving their religion.
