Now you can block that troll you can’t stand. Hopefully our great mods to most of this work for you, but Disqus has added a blocking feature for users. It’s all explained here.

As always, we welcome your comments, suggestions and not-so-much complaints.

Alan here’s some advise from an arm chair talk show host when doplerson refuses to answer a question or talks over you just turn him down like you do some other callers untill he does because he ignores you and talks over you making for a lop sided confusing conversation. Al is from Oakland CA he was a frequent caller to KGO AM 810 before they banned ask him if he knows that Barney Ward is getting out of prison soon.

  5. Hirightnow June 23rd, 2016 at 17:58

I saw that, but I’d rather be aware of the idiocy than ignorant of it.
(I DO wonder if, after blocking a user, one can see the replies to that user’s OP…)

    • Clementine June 23rd, 2016 at 18:52

I agree, it’s always better to know what is going on, even if it is awful stuff. That is a good question. If the one you block is a prolific commentor and generates a lot of chatter from interesting posters, you would miss some really good stuff. Throwing out the baby with the bath water if you will. ;) If you can see the replies, it would be better to see it in context anyway.

Clem, sorry to butt in….can ya give me a hint where I know you from?

        • Clementine June 24th, 2016 at 06:13

Don’t fret, you don’t know me from anywhere. I saw what the sock was doing to you and felt the need to step in and say something. It looked like you didn’t know who was stalking you. My connection was knowing that sock and what she does, not knowing you. :-) I never talk to or respond to the sock. Cocoa puffs, if ya know what I mean.

          • 17 June 24th, 2016 at 07:35

Cocoa Puffs? You don’t know tha half of it! Thanks again.

          • clemans June 24th, 2016 at 07:51

I am not bothered at all by trolls….so I don’t have any problem talking to them. It isn’t likely that I would ever exchange my beliefs for theirs or agree to let them define who I am, or take any of them seriously. Most are larking about and sounding childish, immature, and just can’t be taken seriously in any critical thinking way. I get tired and bored dealing with 13 yr olds, but I find too many of them on the liberal side too. And it just makes me wonder what are we teaching our children about maturity, common sense and civility.

That is curious! I thought “sudden conscience?” then thought it more likely that mom stood at the basement steps yelling “what are you kids doing down there!” Hahaha I do wonder if the recent enforcement of TOS rules around the web has any effect, people are finally getting it that not “anything goes” with free speech. There are responsibilities (and lots of bannings) , and yay for that when needed . :-)

I do like the new feature on the Disqus moderation panel in the deleted comments section. It is nice they have now added the additional information that a user deleted their own comment(s). Why someone would post over 100 comments only to delete them all is strange.

      • 17 June 25th, 2016 at 15:41

Perhaps you are new to this, but whaen someone deletes their disqus account, all their comments across many sites disappear. You’d know that if you’d ever acknowledged my emails to you.

is this saying that anyone, liberal or conservative or in between can post any idiotic post using a 13 yr old mentality, and anybody posting a comment pointing out how lacking in critical thinking a post is, that they can be blocked so the idiotic post stands unchallenged?

If so, that will ruin the reason for having apolitical forum. Might as well ban politics and world affairs and we solely chat about plants, cooking, movies, vacations, and fun things….all things good, but only that changes the entire forum. So I hope I am wrong on what this will do.

    • mea_mark June 24th, 2016 at 09:11

Everything will always be subject to moderation.

      • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 08:25

which still comes down to posters being babysat….as adults….

If you want the Wild Wild West of the Internet with virtually no moderation to speak of, there’s always Mediaite.

          • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 16:17

that isn’t what I want. What I want is for liberals to realize we aren’t weak and we can beat trolls using facts, logic, and critical thinking and we can take responsibility for our own actions…..we do not have to read or respond to any post we choose not to. I want the power within us, not the job of a childminder.

Look at the mess this nation is in, mostly due to the fact that conservatives are batshit crazy and liberals sit on their backsides and don’t get out to vote…..we wouldn’t be in this mess if liberals saw themselves as having power. If WE got out and reclaimed our inner strength, got educated and informed, and then acted from there, trolls and their nastiness would mean nothing.

They are only as powerful as we choose to let them be. Their posted opinions only matter if we are foolish enough to surrender our power and decide to exchange our beliefs for theirs. I don’t believe we have to.

Somebody needs to make liberals mad enough to get them thinking for themselves and acting…..that is how Rove got conservatives to take a stand, only he discouraged knowledge and facts. We can do better. But not if we don’t believe in ourselves.

    • Hirightnow June 24th, 2016 at 09:28

Blocked comments will be blocked for YOU, not others.
Ready Robert posts “I want to have Trumps baby, I love him so much!”
You reply that Trump likes women, and foreign ones at that.
Ready Robert blocks you, because why should you ruin his dreams?
      Meand_Marco sees both posts
      Heyyouthere sees both posts
      YOU see both posts.
Ready Robert sees his post only, and feels safer in a world soon to be populated with lil Trump babies.

Kudos on the best explanation of the disqus blocker…..ever.

      • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 08:18

thanks, that at least is somewhat better than what I feared…..I still don’t like it much but that might be something I could adjust to. It still seems like a troll will get off easy, they can say any idiotic thing, block responses, and not really know how many people disagree with them. They won’t be challenged and will still operate in a tunnel so dark they can’t see.

        • Hirightnow June 25th, 2016 at 11:53

Which is where the mods come in. Most of your garden variety trolls do it for the responses, anyway, so I doubt they would be the ones doing the blocking.

          • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 16:20

sadly, most of the blocking will come from liberals who see themselves as being too weak to hear opposing views, even from other liberals. And we will become as weak and ineffective as the conservatives want us to be. And the rich will keep winning.

    • eyelashviper June 24th, 2016 at 10:06

Open Forum….assuming that most people are adults, somewhat responsible, and open to discussion and exchange of ideas.
This is also a place to post something that is not already covered in one of the articles already posted…
Is this really so difficult to understand?

      • oldfart June 24th, 2016 at 14:23

In this country, people (also) have the right to remain stupid.
Why deprive them of their right to prove it ? ;)

      • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 08:09

yes, in a site for liberals who ought to be in favor of free speech, it is very hard to understand….I would expect his place to be one for adults who have free will to decide for themselves what to read or not read, and who to reply to and who not to. Don’t see a need for change.

Free speech means there should be times when people say things one doesn’t like to hear…..I assume none of us are hothouse flowers and won’t wilt. And there is no exchange if people can just click a button and shut someone up.

Yes, it is very difficult to understand adult support for this, and it isn’t in keeping with American values to me either……imagine someone having the right to silence the people who pushed for independence…..that was a very unpopular idea when it first turned up.

        • Clementine June 25th, 2016 at 14:34

Your inability to comprehend the optional program is causing you the vapors, or you are manufacturing drama because……why?
I have the perfect forum for you. Go here:
          http://thebannedroom.tumblr.com/

It is a group of a couple dozen like minded people who have been banned from every site with basic rules for behavior, decency, and respect for other posters. (Including this one.) They started their own site. They go here to whine about how unfair it was that they were banned for their rude an unacceptable behavior. Please go to their TOS page first. It will take you about an hour to read, it would seem that they are picky as to just how much free speech anyone is allowed, especially on their site. I’m going to make a guess that you are intimately familiar with this site anyway, but do check it out and see if it’s more to your liking. No one likes unhappy campers. Have a great day. :-)

          • 17 June 25th, 2016 at 15:27

Clemans wouldn’t last ten minutes at that site. The dynamic duo who run it are very particular about what sites they permit their users to visit, and what content they are allowed to post. Everything is spelled out clearly in their TOS, and yet they deny they are promoting censorship. They are also fond of removing posts selectively, depending on the “the color of one’s hair”, as was explained to me once.

            • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 16:10

So far, I have held my own and no troll has gotten to me or beat me. I don’t go to any troll site because I am not interested, not because I am frightened…to date trolls have said they wanted to kill me, find my home and do damage to me, told me to shut up, die, leave the nation, made fun of the nearly 25 yrs of my husband’s military service, said I was weak, stupid, called me a communist, socialist, a Marxist, and said they were sorry for my kids…..and that my kids should die, they have called me gay, said I love blacks and Mexicans….and one called me wretched….with feeling. Can you think of something else they could say that wouldn’t fall within that range…..Not only have they not been able to raise my blood pressure, but I am still laughing and bragging about being called wretched. They have also mocked me for taking college classes, reading books, traveling, then said I have never traveled….you name it. No weak knees here, no tears….mostly they say stupid things that make no sense and have no possibility to them….can’t do much but wish we had fact-based education and feel sorry for them. There is far too much to do in the world that is enjoyable, and being rude, immature, and unimportant is what they limit themselves too.

I am too intelligent to spend 10 minutes there. I would hope that most liberals would be too bored going there.

Liberals are supposed to embrace independent thought. FOX has dumbed us down, convinced us that we are too weak to take care of ourselves, and made us too much like conservatives….we should rejoice the fact that liberals don’t have to walk in step like conservatives do. We don’t need to force each other to be a round peg fitting into a round hole. THEY shut out opinion not like their own. We shouldn’t try to be like them.

                • clemans June 26th, 2016 at 11:40

if you aren’t able to hear other people’s opinions or ideas that might be different from your own, maybe it is you that needs to go elsewhere. This is supposed to be an open forum for adults. And I have been civil and haven’t said anything that should make me have to leave.

Maybe with conservative ideas, you might feel more at home on another site.

                • clemans June 26th, 2016 at 11:45

an echo chamber is a dangerous place to put one’s mind, liberals should be embracing the flow of ideas and opinions. We are supposed to be the party of inclusiveness …..it is the conservatives who ban free thought and don’t want others to be different.

                  • mea_mark June 26th, 2016 at 14:07

Nobody has any desire to be part of some drama going on at another website. If it continues people will be banned. That is the general consensus.

                    • clemans June 26th, 2016 at 20:51

I don’t have any idea what you are talking about. I am not having an issue on any other site and my remarks have been made concerning this topic. On a story I found here.

If others are trying to argue and include me, that is not my doing and I am not involved in that. My argument is over free speech and people being responsible for themselves and for uniting and beating Trump using rational thoughts, logic, and adult reasoning.

.If some are carrying over problems from elsewhere, I am not part of that.

            • mea_mark June 26th, 2016 at 09:33

Please take this conversation elsewhere. It’s annoying.

          • clemans June 25th, 2016 at 15:58

if you are seeing vapors, than that is something you might need help with, maybe critical thinking class…not sure. I don’t have any vapors. I disagree with censorship. I have been consistent on that since I was about 11 yrs old. If someone posts things I see that might be threatening I turn it over to the FBI or to someone my spouse knows in Homeland Security. Short of that, I can police myself, I don’t need babysitters, and I don’t require somebody to protect me from idiot trolls. I have no interest in going to their sites, and I am not sure what happens here does anything to them there. Here, I can take care of myself. I have no need to think or act like a troll or a conservative. I don’t need to double down on what they do or outdo them…however anybody would want to phrase it.

And you would be guessing wrong again if you think I have been to their site. I am a liberal, supporting liberal values, and the values that our nation was created on, free speech being one of those things. I am just strong, assertive, and I choose how much energy I will spend on trolls. And I choose not to exchange my opinions for theirs. I am not going to be the puppet at the end of their strings.

We have more power within than most of us seem to realize, and that is why we have republican governors and the trouble with trolls and Tea Party types. Liberals need to look within and stand up and solve our own problems. Not sit back and see ourselves as weak, needing others to protect us. We can do anything we want to, and trolls can’t hurt us unless we give them permission to. I won’t do that.

            • Clementine June 26th, 2016 at 08:34

Oh dear. So much wordage is indication of a non existent issue looking for a solution. Here ya go:
              1. If you do not wish to block anyone, don’t.
              2. If you don’t want others to block you, sorry, you do not get a vote. That is their right not to pay attention to you.
              3. If your liberal assertiveness chops are only sewn by being an internet warrior, there is a flaw in your plan.
              4. There is nothing wrong with having good manners on public sites where we are guests. You seem confused about the difference between censorship, polite behavior, and the rights of individuals to not be bombarded with abusive posters.
Now, I am in agreement with you, in that I choose not to block anyone. I prefer to see every ding dong, cockamamie yammering on by any and all oddballs, because I am both easily amused, and glad to be able to know people by their limp (as we Irish like to say.)
