Supreme Court could decide on states’ right to ban assault weapons

Posted by | June 19, 2016 10:45 | Filed under: Politics

Gun advocates are challenging the right of states to ban assault weapons.

The Connecticut and New York laws prohibit semiautomatic weapons like the one used by the gunman who fatally shot 49 people at a gay night club in Orlando in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The Supreme Court will announce as soon as Monday whether it will hear the challenge brought by gun rights groups and individual firearms owners asserting that the laws violate the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment guarantee of the right to bear arms.

I thought Republicans believed in States Rights? Oh, my bad, they only believe in it when it suits their purpose.

The SCOTUS has already spoken …WTF are you talking about …???
These are Scalia’s own words …
    2) Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons. It means the assault weapons ban by Connecticut and New York has been challenged by gun rights groups. SCOTUS will announce Monday wether it will hear the challenge.

Wont do them any good. Most gun owners here know an AR-15 is worthless
as far as hunting is concerned. No more excuses other than a silly ruling about how many bullets per clip… but they will keep trying cause SCOPE and the NRA have a big influence here and local “county mounties” AKA sherrifs have said they will not help enforce it. (and I have to pay for these assholes).
