Blood donations needed, but many gay, bi, trans people banned from giving
The FDA bans many LGBT persons from donating blood at a time it is urgently needed.
Click here for reuse options!In 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration lifted its three-decade lifetime ban on all men who have ever had sex with men, as well as transgender women, from donating blood.
The ban, however, wasn’t completely lifted: instead of the lifetime ban, it now stands for men who have had sex with another man in the previous year. This classification is also applied to transgender women, which has been a distinct fight all its own.
Women who have sex with a man who has had sex with another man in the last year are also banned from donating…
Even the nation’s biggest blood banks, the American Red Cross and America’s Blood Centers, have called the bans “medically and scientifically unwarranted.”

Things like this point out how poorly we prune our laws and statutes. There are many many obsolete laws on our books. Some knee-jerk reactionary group gets a bug up its butt and gets their current cause enshrined in a law that applies so specifically that it never really does anything except gum up the works. Kinda like BH2 et al. While it may take a year or two to enact a law, it seems it takes an ice age to repeal poorly written, obsolete, overly-specific laws.
