‘Depressed’ Paul McCartney turned to booze after Beatles breakup

Posted by | May 24, 2016 14:42 | Filed under: Media/Show Business

Paul McCartney hit the bottle to deal with the breakup of the Beatles 46 years ago.

“I was so depressed. You would be. You were breaking from your lifelong friends,” the 73-year-old singer revealed during a taping of BBC radio’s “Mastertapes” (via The Guardian). “So I took to the bevvies. I took to a wee dram. It was great at first, then suddenly I wasn’t having a good time … I wanted to get back to square one, so I ended up forming Wings.”

Unfortunately for McCartney and wife Linda, who also joined Wings, the group never gained the same success as the Beatles.

“We were terrible. We knew Linda couldn’t play, but she learned, and looking back on it, I’m really glad we did it … I could have just formed a supergroup, rung up Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and John Bonham,” he said. “But you still remember the names of the people who gave you really bad, vicious reviews: Charles Shaar Murray shall ever be hated!”

“We were terrible. We knew Linda couldn’t play, but she learned, and looking back on it, I’m really glad we did it …

From the articles ive read linda wrote most of the songs and her musical talent ( in my opinion ) was just as good or better then paul’s

care to try again paul ?

Linda a better songwriter and musician than Paul? Uh yea, whatever you say.

      • robert May 24th, 2016 at 15:19

i don’t remember paul as a big song writer with the Beatles or am i mistaken ?

        • Hungryman May 24th, 2016 at 15:36

Yes, you’re mistaken. Both Lennon and McCartney contributed equally.

          • robert May 24th, 2016 at 15:44

so Mccartney goes on his own and their was no way to form a band no where near the beatles because other talent cant be found ? Excluding wings … correct ?

The fact is that none of the Beatles had the same level of success in their solo careers as they did with the band.

What?? You don’t remember “,Yellow Submarine”??

          • robert May 24th, 2016 at 16:03

i remember a dorky song about a sub. Is this what you call hof material ?

        • Roctuna May 24th, 2016 at 16:12

Um, yeah, very mistaken. Beatles songs were credited to Lennon/McCartney or McCartney/Lennon depending on who had the most influence on the tune. Perhaps you’ve heard of All My Loving, All Together Now, Another Girl, Back in the USSR, Birthday, Can’t Buy Me Love, Carry That Weight, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Drive My Car, Eleanor Rigby, Fool on the Hill, Golden Slumbers, Get You Into My Life, Hey Jude? Need I go on? There are many more. Linda was a great photographer and the love of Paul’s life but musical talent? Not so much.

that make no sense unless each of the 2 didn’t want to take credit ? it also doesn’t explain why paul’s writing abilities dried up or unable to form another band and it looked like he was in no hurry to do so after leaving the beatles. Even Neil diamond made a fortune without taking the stage with his own band by only writing songs. Sorry im not buying this bs with paul I still think he’s the cry baby who found a case a booze to hang out with for a while

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are still together, yet their best songwriting work came over 40 years ago. You are entitled to your opinion. But to say McCartney was not a major songwriter with the Beatles does not square with the facts as I know them, and as I mentioned, when it comes to the Beatles, I know the facts as well as anyone…

              • robert May 24th, 2016 at 16:44

im not going to drag the rolling stones into this because all 4 members are still performing, No comparison. No matter what some ” opinion writer ” says, to say 2 writers took credit for songs written could suggest paul to this day is unable to come close to prove he was a big influence on the Beatles. I can name a few bands that have lost key musicians and successful writers have gone on to create just as good or better music on their sole ability on what they always knew…sorry people im not buying paul’s sob story

                • arc99 May 24th, 2016 at 18:18

don’t buy into it then. ignore the fact that it was Paul who played lead on some memorable tracks such as TaxMan. I could care less about uninformed opinions.

as an amateur Beatles historian myself, I can only repeat that you are entitled to your opinion, inaccurate as it may be

Some folks are just stubborn. I don’t remember where I read that bit about album credits, which is incorrect. I checked several albums as soon as I got home today. Nonetheless ol’ Robert is way off base on this and he never did answer my inquiry about his wild hair.

                    • robert May 24th, 2016 at 19:48

You might want to check what’s called the Beatles catalog but I’m not the expert here ..remember ?

And this isn’t the first time Paul has gone public with his sob stories He’s pulled this PR stunt before BTW I don’t hear Ringo star moaning about his life Who took more crap then all 3 band members put together

            • Roctuna May 24th, 2016 at 16:29

              Wiki documents it quite well
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_recorded_by_the_Beatles

Why the wild hair up your a$$ about Paul?

              • arc99 May 24th, 2016 at 16:39

and maybe I am oversensitive about his criticism. I was 12 years old when the Beatles made that appearance on Ed Sullivan in 1964. It is because of McCartney and Jimi Hendrix that I, a right handed person, play the guitar left-handed. Those two will always have a special place in my heart and memories for the music they gave to me and the rest of the world.

people are entitled to their opinions. but at least base those opinions on actual events.

              • robert May 24th, 2016 at 16:48

i have nothing personal about paul & i know there has been some tragedy but perhaps his mind took a trip and isn’t coming back could be another explanation ?

            • Hungryman May 24th, 2016 at 16:43

How old are you? Serious question.

        • arc99 May 24th, 2016 at 16:25

very mistaken. ever hear of “Scrambled Eggs”? That was the original working title for Yesterday.

Even as early as the release of Yesterday, the lead singer of the track was a good indicator of who the primary songwriter was, even though all the tunes were credited to Lennon/McCartney.

So just think of all the songs where Paul sang lead. Odds are he was the primary songwriter. Certainly others had input. In an interview, Paul pointed out that the distinctive guitar riff that defines a song he sings lead on (“And I Love Her” ) was contributed by George. But to say Paul was not a big song writer during the heyday of the Beatles is a mistake of the highest order.

Beatles history is a hobby of mine, down to the serial numbers of many of their guitars. I do not claim to be an expert in much of anything. But when it comes to the fab 4, I will pit my knowledge against anyone’s. That Hofner violin bass of McCartney’s was purchased in Hamburg Germany in 1961 for about 30 pounds (maybe $90)according to McCartney..

Today, be ready to fork over about $2K if you want one just like Sir Paul’s

I can see this. When Paul formed Wings he would pop into small venues like colleges, and then pay the band in cash (Ala’ Band on the run). Perhaps trying to recreate the good old days when it was all about the music, the Cavern club and Hamburg (until they got booted when it was discovered that George was underage).

The team of Lennon McCartney didn’t write music that was particularly difficult, but each song was unique, and at the perfect time in musical history.

I find it interesting that George Harrisons writing abilities seemed to have been stifled, yet today his art enjoys as much or more air time than the music of Lennon/McCartney. Something, Here comes the sun and as my guitar gently weeps.

I’ve studied this phenomenon at length and the more I learn about the Beatles, the more I find how much I don’t know.

The of course there was the lost Ringo tunes.

Who are those weird guys who like to hang out with musicians in the band? Not roadies but …..? The beat gets no respect.

We who have even a casual association, prefer to call music a living thing, and the percussion the heartbeat.
