Pope Francis met with met the grand imam of Cairo’s Al-Azhar Mosque Monday.

The first Vatican meeting between the leader of the world’s Catholics and the highest authority in Sunni Islam marks the culmination of a significant improvement in relations between the two faiths since Francis took office in 2013.

“Our meeting is the message,” Francis said in a brief comment to a small pool of reporters present at the start of his meeting with Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb.

In a statement on the trip, Al-Azhar said Tayeb had accepted Francis’s invitation in order to “explore efforts to spread peace and co-existence.”

Kudos to Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmed.

It’s sad but it takes guts for top leaders to do this. Both are probably going to get fatwas against them from right wingers in their own religious communities.

A lot of ultra-conservative Protestants already thought that, and always have. To them, being Catholic is worse than being atheist. But Catholics can be just as narrow-minded about anyone who’s not Catholic. It goes with the territory.

The Pharisees were the Religious Right of Jesus’ day.

        And they loathed him.

        Some things never change.

Maybe if more Americans visited a Mosque and learned something about Islam it could solve a lot of misunderstanding

I would be more impressed if Mr.Ahmed made better efforts with religious gang conflicts in the middle east but what the hell, might as well have a chat with the pope

They have more in common than they do dividing them. They worship the same Gawd.
