Cop points gun, sucker punches man filming arrest

Posted by | May 22, 2016 15:31 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

The New York cop is now being investigated by Internal Affairs.

It started with a pair of dirt bikes and a Hyundai rolling through Harlem, ABC 7 reports. Two police officers pulled over the car, which had been reported stolen. But police say the bikers created a distraction, allowing the people in the car to escape.

The cops, who belong to the 32nd precinct’s Anti-Crime Squad, chased one of the bikers, 21-year-old Dayshawn Bettway, into an apartment complex lobby.

In video obtained by ABC 7, one of the officers put him in a kimura lock (a jiujitsu move), and screamed at the cameraman to back off. The cop had absolutely no chill, pulling out his gun.

NYC paid out $735m last year….an average size city pays about $54m a year…all taxpayer dollars…
      And it just continues…every year…

and it’s their fault because no one gets punished for it. this pos should have been arrested as well. modified work is b.s.

My ex was an ADA years ago and said a lot of times no charges are filed because the insurance policies don’t cover criminal actions … so for economic reasons bad cops get to walk much of the time…

meanwhile, the city (citizens) ends up footing the bill to the tune of multi-million dollar settlements because they are looking at the damn bottom line (which seems stupid considering) instead of getting rid of the cause. how is keeping them employed a good and sound economic reason. i have a solution, make them carry their own damn insurance. 400.00 coming out of their paychecks to not be an ass is a great start.

And that’s the problem, Mike, it’s taxpayer money, it should get taken out of their budget and maybe that will slow them down!

        • Mike May 22nd, 2016 at 18:29

I don’t know Tommie, that sounds like the people who need the cops would suffer the most…not sure what the fix is but charging them would be the logical first step…there’s no reason a cop who injures or kills another human being should not face punishment.

          • Tommie May 22nd, 2016 at 18:39

True, but they keep getting slaps on the wrist which is frustrating but you are right about the people who need them the most!

Require each cop to maintain liability insurance. Individual liability insurance. The contractor who builds your doghouse has it (if he’s licensed), the electrician who wires up the electricity so your dog house can be air conditioned has it, the doggy doctor probably has it, a number of states require liability insurance to give a massage, smart small businesses make sure they have it. None of those mentioned require you to be armed and authorize you to kill if you can come up with even a remotely plausible excuse for it after the fact.

Hell, I gotta have liability insurance before my car can leave my driveway… well, legally anyway.

Not sure but I think some cops do carry insurance.
Money, money, money…it’s always about the money
That’s kind of the problem, insurance policies can’t indemnify someone who commits a criminal act…
You car insurer won’t pay if you were drunk driving and got in an accident…likewise for cop insurance.
The cities either have a policy or self insure … charging a cop with a crime is a tacit admission of guilt which puts the financial obligation in the city’s court … not charging him/her means the policy can pick up some of the tab.
It’s a vicious cycle and I’m not sure what will fix it, but it has to start with charging cops who commit crimes regardless of the financial implication or exposure.

Charging them with a criminal act may put the on the city’s dime, but they ain’t getting charged the vast majority of the time. They BURY the evidence, blame the victim, circle the wagons, and 99 times out of a hundred, they don’t get charged. But cities STILL pay huge amounts to settle cases even when there are no charges.

So it may dump on the cities if the cities prosecute the cop, but since the vast majority of payouts are for officers NOT charged, it would save the cities quite a bit of money. Maybe they could afford to fix a pothole.

Just make your arrest and move on! Was that person filming something you didn’t want others to see? Well, now you are under investigation and we might get to see what you were doing, anyway!

Criminals or Police, which one is worse? It’s hard to tell these days, call the police and you can flip a coin on weather or not you are arrested, live, die, brutalized or actually protected and served.

We used to have a saying in my house about never calling the cops unless somebody’s dead…and even then, wait an hour.
