Oklahoma governor vetoes bill that would have made abortion a felony

Posted by | May 20, 2016 19:00 | Filed under: Politics

Mary Fallin did the right thing.

…Fallin on Friday vetoed a bill that called for prison terms of up the three years for doctors who performed abortions, saying the legislation “would not withstand a criminal constitutional legal challenge.”

The bill, which was approved a day earlier in the Republican-dominated legislature, would have made performing an abortion a felony and also called for revoking the licenses of any doctor who conducted one.

A Republican who knows something about the Constitution? Who woulda thunk it? ;)

    • George Kaplan May 21st, 2016 at 01:17

More of them know something about it than they let on.

They just ignore that knowledge, when it becomes Politically Expedient.

And thus ended Mary Fallin’s short-lived stay on the short list.

So we can dock the pay of he politicians who signed the bill since all they did was waste time?

    • 17 May 20th, 2016 at 23:04

You’d almost think the majority of their pay doesn’t come from the taxpayers, eh?..

      • Suzanne McFly May 21st, 2016 at 06:35

Yeah I know, but it still would be nice to let them know that we see what is going on and taking away some of their money will be step one.

    • Buford2k11 May 21st, 2016 at 10:29

If you look too closely, you will find who is really paying these guys…Their wages, taxpayer money, is a drop in the bucket for some of these folks…they get their real wages when they leave office…

Since abortion isn’t illegal, how can they put doctors in jail for performing a abortion?

    • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker May 21st, 2016 at 07:06

The republican’s strategically uses legal abortion as a wedge issue to rally rubes to vote. They don’t care about the citizenry nor do they care about abortion at all.
They care only about power and profiting from it……period.

    • starskeptic May 21st, 2016 at 10:56

      Good point!
I think it’s that – since Christians consider it immoral – that should trump any pesky legalities…

      • Dwendt44 May 22nd, 2016 at 16:21

And yet the bible doesn’t mention abortion at all, and doesn’t consider a person a living soul until it draws its first breath.

        • starskeptic May 22nd, 2016 at 16:27

          Another good point!
And since most Christians never read much of the Bible – it doesn’t really matter what it says…

This would have been a clear violation of Roe v Wade. The first federal court would throw it out. Then the Repubs would spend millions of taxpayer dollars defending it all the way to the Supreme Court level

    • Comicus May 21st, 2016 at 14:13

For them, only the 2nd Amendment counts, All the other parts of the Constitution are just kinda suggestions and filler.

  7. CandideThirtythree May 21st, 2016 at 02:45

The republicans can’t outlaw abortion because then they would have nothing left to scare the rubes into voting for them…they have had like 40 years of using that worm o lure in the stupidest people in America into voting for people who have destroyed their lives and killed them by the millions…latest medical news is that the people dying the earliest are generally the ones who vote republican the white working class who live in republican states.

For some strange reason (or maybe not so strange) the women get off scott free. Yet if I hire a hit man to bump off my rich aunt, I got to prison as well, right?
Hiring someone to commit a crime is a crime in and of itself.

      • CandideThirtythree May 21st, 2016 at 13:44

It’s republicans…you can’t expect any thinking out of them they are all drooling idiots.

    • PattyJM May 21st, 2016 at 13:51

Don’t worry. They still have transgender women peeing in the lady’s room to scare the troops into sending in money.

Seeing how the law was totally unconstitutional, what other choice did she have?

    • bpollen May 21st, 2016 at 16:15

Those on the right have a different version of the Constitution – with cross-outs and additions in crayon in the margins.
