He retired just last week and died Thursday.

Safer’s first season as a regular 60 Minutes correspondent began in 1970 with a story about the training of U.S. Sky Marshals. His final 60 Minutes report — number 919 — a profile of Danish Architect Bjarke Ingels, was broadcast in March. “After more than 50 years of broadcasting on CBS News and 60 Minutes I have decided to retire. It’s been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air,” said the 84-year-old Safer. “But most of all I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast.

It’s too bad he couldn’t remain the honest journalist he started out as. I’d love to see notes of the things he couldn’t tell.

I had a feeling he was going to pass since he was quitting. It seems when the Hollywood types quit their jobs, soon after they pass on.

It really is a curious phenomena isn’t it? So many creative, productive people die soon after retirement. Remember Charles Schulz? Days after the last Peanuts strip, dead. It’d be an interesting bit of research.

I like to think it’s because their work and involvement keeps them running but when that’s gone something strange happens to the mind/body system. To me, the bottom line is keep going ’til you drop.

That’s what I plan to do
