Military prefer Trump to Clinton

Posted by | May 9, 2016 21:00 | Filed under: Politics

Could it be they have a problem with a female Commander-in-Chief?

In a new survey of American military personnel, Donald Trump emerged as active-duty service members’ preference to become the next U.S. president, topping Hillary Clinton by more than a 2-to-1 margin. However, in the latest Military Times election survey, more than one in five troops said they’d rather not vote in November if they have to choose between just those two candidates.

But given only those choices, 21 percent of the service members surveyed said they would abstain from voting.More than 54 percent of the 951 troops Military Times surveyed said they would vote for Trump, the presumed Republican presidential nominee, over Clinton, the Democratic front-runner. Only about 25 percent said they would vote for Clinton in that matchup.

    ‘k

    • Gina Bousquet May 9th, 2016 at 21:03

Hi Alli! What does ‘k mean?

      • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:26

        Short to for “OK,” maybe?

Although both have two characters to type.

        • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:34

you seem to be catching on.

          • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:37

Are you damning me with faint praise?

            No matter.

People often use short-hand or acronyms, assuming everybody knows what they mean when, in fact, they are not commonly used.

I’m not too vain to ask them what they are trying to say.

            • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:42

no. there were times when you would ask what something meant. now, you seem to have caught on. nothing bad about it. not at all. i’ve had to ask as well. don’t take every comment so personally.

              • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:49

                >>don’t take every comment so personally.

Are you suggesting I’m thin-skinned and insecure?

Besides, wouldn’t the abbreviation for OK be ‘K rather than ‘k?

                • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:58

                  i just go k

                  • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 22:01

I tried just “k” but Disqus requires at least two characters.

                    So:

                    ‘K

                    • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 22:13

you’re right. i mostly use “k” in my text. not here.

                • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 22:36

                  lol.

                • CandideThirtythree May 10th, 2016 at 11:02

Pfft! you should see my kid’s texts, I asked if they were being charged by the letter instead of the text…no capitals, no punctuation and everything abbreviated…I teased them about getting a better phone plan LOL.

        • Gina Bousquet May 9th, 2016 at 22:39

That’s it. Thank you! Too coloquial American for my knowledge of English

      • allison1050 May 10th, 2016 at 06:26

Hi Gina! It means okay or ok. In this instance, I needed to use at least 2 characters in order to post. Since the story was actually a “space filler” (a story about nothing in other words) I typed ‘k. I feel that sometimes a white screen would be better in some instances. Sometimes when I read a story with no true meaning or intent I’ll write zzzzzzz just to mix things up a bit. :o)
Is it starting to cool down yet?

        • Gina Bousquet May 10th, 2016 at 18:33

I love it when you write zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :) Sorry for my lack of colloquialisms, I should have figured out it meant ok. It’s already darn cold here for our standards, a cold autumn in the mountains.

          • allison1050 May 10th, 2016 at 19:28

I remember that our seasons are reversed. There’s nothing for you to apologize for my friend. ;o) Stay warm!

            • Gina Bousquet May 10th, 2016 at 19:32

              I will! Thanks dear! :)

  2. Gina Bousquet May 9th, 2016 at 21:02

“NOT a scientific poll of military preferences…” Oh, alrighty then…

  3. Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:03

Do the troops really want another three-trillion dollar needless war?

  4. mea_mark May 9th, 2016 at 21:12

If I was in the military, I would prefer tRump over Hillary also. I sure wouldn’t want to fight one of Hillary’s unnecessary wars. Hillary will go to war, tRump may or may not. tRump talks big, but what he will really do is an unknown. I am guessing his military advisors would probably get their way with him. The best generals know that war is not something to be desired, it is something that occasionally needs to be executed and avoided when possible.

    • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:14

tRump with a finger hovering over a button and the codes to nukes, i think not.

      • mea_mark May 9th, 2016 at 21:16

I really doubt he would push that button. He loves himself too much and would be afraid of the consequences it would bring to his image.

        • wpadon May 9th, 2016 at 21:18

I think Trump would get mad and nuke someone just to prove he has huuuge hands

          • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:25

What could go wrong between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump — two hot-headed, thin-skinned reactionaries with nuclear weapons?

            • CandideThirtythree May 10th, 2016 at 10:57

Yea but Kim can’t even get a missile off the ground without it blowing up, he is no threat to anyone but his own people.

        • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:27

          >> would be afraid of the consequences it would bring to his image.

If nuking somebody would make Trump seem “strong” his supporters would love him even more for it.

          • mea_mark May 10th, 2016 at 16:31

He would be absolutely despised by so many though and his name would forever be in the history books as someone who murdered many for questionable reasons. It just goes against his narcissistic nature. He wants more people to love and admire him, not less.

    • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:32

      >> Hillary will go to war

She is too hawkish for me but how can you be so sure?

Of course, every president in modern times has done something militarily. But it’s the Republican presidents who get us into spectacularly expensive wars and throw billions, even trillions, at the military.

      • CandideThirtythree May 10th, 2016 at 10:55

Did you hear her freak out in the debates over even talking to anyone she considers an enemy? She kept saying over and over that she would not even consider talking…she wants to go straight for the throat because she thinks it makes her look tough.

She is dying to start a war and she doesn’t much care who with as long as it makes her look badass like a man.

      • mea_mark May 10th, 2016 at 11:38

Look at Hillary’s record and what she has pushed for as SOS.

    • burqa May 9th, 2016 at 21:41

Given his penchant for flying off the handle and not thinking things through, I think Trump is far more likely to get us unto a war .

      • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:46

        I could not agree more.

Add to that, his simplistic understanding of the world.

Hillary, in contrast, has a very nuanced and in-depth understanding of international affairs.

        • mea_mark May 10th, 2016 at 16:32

Yet is often wrong when it comes to war. It’s like she has some strange fixation on the idea that she is a great general or something.

      • mea_mark May 10th, 2016 at 11:37

Going to war takes time and planning, it isn’t something you just do.

    • Budda May 9th, 2016 at 21:53

Have you gone over to the dark side?

      • mea_mark May 10th, 2016 at 16:33

Been there and came back. Didn’t really like it over there.

    • granpa.usthai May 9th, 2016 at 23:41

spoiled pampered blowhards like trump will be the first to go to war – it “proves” their manhood, and if it’s not their sore footsies in the boots on the ground, they don’t really care (ref: illegal Iraq invasion/military occupation. PLUS – war has become extremely profitable for the insiders who risk nothing and reap trillions of dollars that go into their unregulated offshore bank accounts.

      • CandideThirtythree May 10th, 2016 at 10:52

But Clinton is always pushing for wars because she thinks it makes her look tough…like a man and that is why she is dangerous because she wants to prove that she is has the balls to do what men do.

  5. Suzanne McFly May 9th, 2016 at 21:25

Seems like they polled only the ones who look forward to combat pay.

    • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:34

how many were hispanic, black or muslim?

      • Mensa Member May 9th, 2016 at 21:44

I have known lots and lots of “troops” and vets.

Some turn anti-war, after their service. Many are skeptical about the politics and profiteering behind war. Many aren’t white, conservative Christians.

I’ll guess that very few of those subscribe to Military Times.

        • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 21:59

but, in this case we’re talking about tRump.

      • Suzanne McFly May 10th, 2016 at 06:20

        Or female

  6. Red Mann May 9th, 2016 at 22:06

The military leadership is heavily biased against Democrats whom they perceived want to weaken the military and are “surrender monkeys”. The military also attempts to instill an authoritarian mindset in the troops; don’t ever question orders or authority. Also there is a large number of fundigelicals in leadership positions who boldly proselytize to the troops. Being exposed to this environment for years can definitely shift political positions. I joined the Navy nearly 50 years ago and many of the guys I served with were more or less liberal and somewhat anti-authoritarian, now many are knee-jerk right wingers (who don’t talk to me anymore).

    • whatthe46 May 9th, 2016 at 22:12

      wow.

    • granpa.usthai May 9th, 2016 at 23:32

but if sore footsies weaken a blow hard pampered panzy commander – ….?

seems to me that would do a lot more damage than a commander who was attempting to avoid conflict in the first place.

    • CHOCOL8MILK May 10th, 2016 at 02:32

Ummm…fyi, it’s the military, they have to instill an authoritarian mindset….the military isn’t a democracy.

      • Red Mann May 10th, 2016 at 11:25

Ummm, no kidding, I spent 24 years in the military, well it was the Navy which is not so military. We didn’t have to give up all, or even most, freedoms nor did we have to buy in to the authoritarian mindset as long as we didn’t cause too much trouble. I was just pointing out some possible reasons for the poll results.

        • CHOCOL8MILK May 10th, 2016 at 12:17

Navy is military in my opinion. I was in the Air Force, I joined in 1997…so perhaps that is why we may have different perspectives, age differences and experiences. The leadership issue you mention makes sense. Sadly, a lot of young impressionable kids are just that… impressionable and can only go by what they see on the news when they have time at the AOR. Regarding those who are stationed state side, there’s no excuse for being ill-informed.

    • CandideThirtythree May 10th, 2016 at 10:49

Yep, I noticed the same thing in my military family. Except that the younger ones were more liberal to start with and stayed that way. My children were both in the military and the youngest has only been out a couple of years, their friends from the military are also more liberal. One of their complaints was that they would be punished for not going to church every Sunday. Even though most of the dog tags say ‘none’ in the space for religious preference now, the military still punishes the ones who don’t go by making them paint rocks or clean toilets or something else stupid, they will not give them a break to do what they want during that time.

      • Red Mann May 10th, 2016 at 11:29

In my time, ’64 – ’88, I never saw any coercion to go to church, of course the Navy might have been a little more lax on this. The only time I had to go to church was when I was in the Bluejacket Chorus in Great Lakes where we were the base chapel’s choir.

  7. granpa.usthai May 9th, 2016 at 23:27

exactly why the Constitution places the military under civilian rule.

  8. bpollen May 10th, 2016 at 04:28

    Half the military is chanting:
    What do we want?
    More dead troops!
    When do we want it?
On day 1 of Emperor Donnie The First’s reign!
    “Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant”

  9. robert May 10th, 2016 at 07:06

funny how the military almost favors bernie more then trump

    Imagine that

    • amongoose May 10th, 2016 at 09:50

      Not surprising at all.
Like the rest of American they are tired of endless war for profit.
Either of those candidates would be less likely to send them into combat.

      • robert May 10th, 2016 at 20:54

i was thinking our troops are not at all convinced ISIL would be wiped out quickly as trump claims, your right not surprising at all

  10. Charlie Seivard May 10th, 2016 at 08:37

Lemmings in uniform anxious to die in new places.

  11. Jimmy Fleck May 10th, 2016 at 09:31

I thought Trump was the one most against our war in Iraq. I don’t see him as throwing US troops into conflicts around the world. Hillary would definitely be more likely to commit US troops to a conflict in my opinion. That being said I don’t care for either of these two to be elected president and won’t be voting for either of them.

    • Obewon May 10th, 2016 at 09:58

Trump contradicts himself with 2+ positions on every issue, often minutes apart. Schoolyard bully Donnie’s tiny hands cause his constant overreactions, proving he has no accurate understanding of anything. ‘I’d nuke Europe!’ Your kids are cannon fodder because Trump believes Faux news parroting ‘War is inevitable.’
