Sanders: ‘I will do everything I can to prevent’ a Trump presidency

Posted by | May 7, 2016 09:19 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews

Senator Bernie Sanders was on my radio show Friday night and, while he didn’t say he’d endorse Hillary Clinton should she be the nominee, he vowed to do all he can to prevent Donald Trump from being president. We discussed is path to victory and what his plan b is.

COLMES: Given that is the case is there a plan B and so conversely would you endorse and will you whole-heartedly endorse Hillary Clinton if she is the nominee?

SANDERS: Well plan A is in the next 5 or 6 weeks to do everything we can to win the nomination if that plan does not work out than obviously we will take a look at plan B but what I can assure you and your listeners is that I think a Donald Trump presidency would be a disaster for this country and I will do everything that I can to prevent that from happening.

Sounds like Sanders is keeping all his options open until after the nominating convention. That is something all the delegates at the convention should keep in mind.

    • DownriverDem May 7th, 2016 at 09:34

Bernie needs to go. We all know it’s Trump v Hillary. That should be our focus. Infighting is only going to hurt our chances in November.

      • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 10:27

Well I won’t be infighting. I will be firmly in the Green Party camp if Hillary gets the nomination. The new center right democratic party of war will be the enemy.

        • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker May 7th, 2016 at 10:54

And that will accomplish nothing for our nation.

          • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 11:01

I disagree. I am fighting for what I believe is right and just. The fight alone, is an example of what we should all be doing. Going along for the sake of practicality as we are led to the harvest by the oligarchy is nuts.

            • Budda May 7th, 2016 at 12:46

By not voting for the Dem you might be helping the true enemy…the reactionary Republicans

              • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 14:11

No, it is the people voting for the dems and not the green party candidate that are helping the republicans. The dems want to work with the oligarchy just as much as the republicans do. The real enemy is the oligarchy.

                • Budda May 7th, 2016 at 14:17

I’m sorry, but I don’t see it that way. You do have a point about the oligarchies however, a vote for a third party is , unfortunately, a wasted vote.

                  • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 17:25

Until the conventions are done, I’m keeping my options wide open.
November is still a long ways away. Political strategy takes time and a good sense of smell… ;)

                • Kick Frenzy May 7th, 2016 at 15:09

I’d argue it’s the votes for Hillary that are helping Republicans.

Bernie is running as a Dem, but if he got the nomination, there wouldn’t be a seething hatred fueling the Republican voter base.
(And he isn’t part of the oligarchy.)

                  • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 15:47

That’s pretty much my assessment. Well, and of course some of Hillary’s position on issues are in accord with the republicans. It’s almost like voting for a republican.

                    • Kick Frenzy May 8th, 2016 at 01:37

Hell, she pretty much agreed with George W Bush on a disconcerting amount of decisions!

                      For instance, from 2006:

“Upon examination, Hillary Clinton turns out not to be what her supporters wish she would be. Increasingly, her political stances are moving toward the right. It started with support for Bush’s tax cuts for the rich, then into Clinton’s vote in favor of the Patriot Act, though she never even read the legislation before voting on it. Then, of course, there was Hillary Clinton’s support for the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Senator Clinton didn’t just support the Iraq War at the beginning. She still supports it, and still refuses to admit that she made the wrong choice. Since that pro-war vote, Hillary Clinton has gone sliding further and further to the right, supporting initiatives to mix religion and government, supporting Pro-Life candidates, and even voting for a law to end free speech as we know it by making flag burning a crime. Time and time again, Hillary Clinton has failed to stand up to George W. Bush. When Russ Feingold called for the censure of George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton left him hanging.”

“The real enemy is the oligarchy”

sounds like someone doesn’t like global capitalism. china and cuba are communist, maybe you should consider moving there. not trying to be a jerk, just saying, if you hate capitalism so much, you can leave.

          • StoneyCurtisll May 7th, 2016 at 11:25

            Exactly~!

        • libpatriot May 7th, 2016 at 15:05

I very much wanted Bernie to win the nomination, but I’ll have to support Hillary rather than let any Republican get the White House. At least she’ll do right on the social issues.

        • Homosexual May 8th, 2016 at 13:45

“The new center right democratic party of war will be the enemy”

Also the party of mainstream america. Hence Obama’s 2x election, his view HRC is his chosen heir, and HRC clinging to Obama.

It’s like the SNL skit…. where kate mckinnon as HRC says, you got crazies on the right, loonies on the left, and you’re stuck in the middle with me!

          aint that the truth.

      • jybarz May 7th, 2016 at 11:49

        Really?
        We all know?
Do you know how far in time Hillary went in 2008 Primary?
        http://www.politico.com/story/2016/04/hillary-clinton-bernie-sanders-delegate-quit-222503

Do you know that super delegates don’t officially get counted till the convention? Hillary’s count of super delegates are mostly from last year before Sanders was on the way up? Do you know that Super delegates can change their votes till the convention like they did for Obama in 2008?

Do you know that Bernie is polling well ahead of both Hillary and Tramp with the independents and this fact might sway the super delegates if Bernie comes close to Hillary in pledged delegates?

Downriver? Sounds like the place in Michigan where I grew up.

      • Obewon May 7th, 2016 at 18:35

Exactly! May 17 HRC becomes the presumptive nominee via pledged delegates and Superdelegates polled monthly by (AP)

Pledged delegates HRC 1,705, Sanders 1,415.
Superdelegates HRC 523, to Sanders 39.
Bernie lags in all tallies with HRC 2,228 to Sanders distant 1,454. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Hillary+clinton+delegates+won&eob=m.09c7w0/D/5/short/m.09c7w0/

    • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker May 7th, 2016 at 10:22

I think it’s time for Bernie to rally his followers for the betterment of our nation.
I’m glad he ran but the numbers don’t work and I don’t want him to be humiliated.

      • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 10:40

Starting out with a snowballs chance in hell, sparking the imaginations of millions and culminating with the opportunity to address the DNC convention because of his ideals and his supporters…humiliated ? hardly.

        • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker May 7th, 2016 at 10:49

Like I said, I’m glad he ran; but it’s time to understand reality.

          • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 10:57

I get the math. It’s the message.

    • Mike May 7th, 2016 at 12:47

Hill will have to take more than 75% of the remaining votes to win by pledged delegates alone…so the super delegates will decide the nominee…
If Bernie can produce a string of victories like Indiana, he might change some minds…right now, that’s the only hope…

      • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 14:07

Or maybe something like this happening will become more frequent … POLITICSIt’s Official — the First Democratic Convention Just Abolished Superdelegates … http://usuncut.com/politics/maine-democratic-party-just-got-rid-superdelegate-system/

        • Kick Frenzy May 7th, 2016 at 14:43

          YAY!!!
Thanks for posting that… I was wondering how that vote was going to go. :)

(I have to agree with them that it would’ve been nice if it went into effect this year, but that it’s smarter to have it go into effect in 2020.)

          • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 15:45

Hopefully it will make the superdelegates reconsider their position more carefully.

  2. Budda May 7th, 2016 at 09:28

He sounds like he is really interested in the best for America.

    • robert May 7th, 2016 at 21:05

no doubt about it and the wins to back it up

  3. DownriverDem May 7th, 2016 at 09:33

Really Bernie? Then leave with class, grace and dignity. You will then have a major role at the Dem Convention. All you are doing now is helping Trump. Time to go Bernie.

  4. oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 09:39

Of coarse the Donald would like nothing more that the Democratic party to split third party in the general. I agree with our President, let the process play out.

    • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 17:27

      >> I agree with our President, let the process play out.

Oh, absolutely. I defend Bernie’s right to stay in the race.

But by staying in the race, he’s not “doing everything” to defeat Trump.

He’s damaging Hillary which is helping Trump.

      • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 17:50

Ask yourself why our president is staying out of this one.
Prove your damage, Bernie has not changed Hillary’s negatives that she hasn’t had all along. Wait for the friggin convention and if you don’t like what I comment on, don’t reply, I got it and you wont care what I say anyway. We do not need to stress each other out…yet ;)

  5. mistlesuede May 7th, 2016 at 10:39

Well, you haven’t done so up until now, so there is no need to listen to you anymore.
You are long past your expiration date.

  6. StoneyCurtisll May 7th, 2016 at 11:23

    Dont worry Uncle Bernie…
You have half the republican party working with you~!

  7. granpa.usthai May 7th, 2016 at 14:00

start campaigning with a lifesize Melanija Knavs Trump nude cutout with a fake zerman accent voice saying I’m mit Bernie?

  8. DogsRgoodpeople May 7th, 2016 at 14:34

    From politico:

    Hillary forces target Bush donors

Their message to moderate Republicans: She represents your values better than Trump.

    Read more: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/hilary-clinton-bush-donors-222872#ixzz47znYhNHi

we will get fed the same plate of crap daily. SCOTUS appointments will be moderates that are pro corporation and1%r’s, but will vote progressive on social issues. status quo but better than religious zealots.

if bernie hangs in,( and he will thankfully), he can get more commitments from the Hillary camp. it will be very public and if she backs out of it in the future she will lose even more progressives next time around.assuming assuming there is a next time around for her.

The More Bernie Votes The Better For America

    • Kick Frenzy May 7th, 2016 at 15:12

Heck… assuming there’s even a first time for her.
But without the majority of the Independent vote, it’s dangerously uncertain.

    • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 17:21

      >> The More Bernie Votes The Better For America

      Are you new to politics?

Remember Ralph Nader’s uncompromising insistence that he stay in the race? Thanks to him, we got GW Bush.

      • DogsRgoodpeople May 7th, 2016 at 17:42

rader was a third party candidate.
cmon , has mensa lowered the bar that much ?

        • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 17:50

c’mon, are you intentionally missing my point?

The uncompromising politics of Ralph Nader gave us President GW Bush.

Will the uncompromising politics of Bernie Sanders give us President Donald Trump?

          It might.

          • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 17:52

The republican loaded “SCROTUS” gave us GWB.

            • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 18:13

SCROTUS couldn’t have stolen the election if Nader had not divided the liberal vote.

          • mea_mark May 7th, 2016 at 20:35

Sometimes I wonder if the dems purposefully failed that election to put the liberals in line with the party. Gore vs Nader was a really bad decision, they were both fairly green. Establishment came out ahead, lost, and now they can forever say the green party is why they lost. Message; don’t ever vote green.

Today’s candidates in the dem party are far apart, different scenario and does not compare to yesterday’s Gore vs Nader.

It won’t be Sanders who gives us tRump, it will be uniteblue at whatever cost vs what is actually best for the people that gives us tRump. Uniteblue is dividing the dems and demanding the party get in line with the oligarchy that is pulling the strings in the democratic party.

            • robert May 7th, 2016 at 21:02

lol i can remember gore campaigning for the NAFTA bill

we all know how that worked out, i haven’t heard from the vp who couldn’t win his own state. I wonder why ?

          • Um Cara May 7th, 2016 at 20:36

c’mon, are you intentionally missing my point?

The uncompromising politics of Ralph Nader gave us President GW Bush.

You specifically brought up insistence in staying in the race, which, as was pointed out – was a third party move in Nader’s case, not a particularly fair comparison. It’s pretty easy to see why someone might think that was your point, lol. Certainly understandable enough not to act like he was intentionally missing your point.

Bernie isn’t going to run as a third party, Hillary gets stronger the further he pulls her to the left – why wouldn’t future president Hillary like to understand how much support for liberalism there is in these United States? She’ll be better for it.

If Hillary can’t beat Trump, it won’t be Bernie’s fault.

            • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 22:55

              >> If Hillary can’t beat Trump, it won’t be Bernie’s fault.

Nader says the same thing, to this day. But, if Bernie significantly damages Hillary, it will be at least partly his fault that we have Trump.

              • Um Cara May 7th, 2016 at 23:19

If Bernie runs third party and Hillary loses, I’ll join you in suggesting Nader is a valid comparison.

Otherwise – If Hillary loses to a clown like trump, it won’t be because of anything that happened in the primaries, it will be because she can’t convince enough voters that she would be a better president than Trump.

                That’s a hill I think she’s prepared to climb.

      • robert May 7th, 2016 at 21:00

        comparing nader to sanders

        who’s the one uninformed ?

    • robert May 7th, 2016 at 20:57

im not too sure bernie wants all her super delegates Just the ones that are not politically corrupt

  9. TKList May 7th, 2016 at 15:26

Trump wants Bernie as his VP.

    • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 17:24

      >> Trump wants Bernie as his VP.

Trump is already quoting Bernie in his attacks on Hillary.

So, in the most literal sense, Bernie is helping Trump. Hopefully it won’t be enough to give us a President Trump. (my skin crawled a little when I wrote that.)

      • oldfart May 7th, 2016 at 17:55

If Hillary is a tough as you say she is why are you so worried ?
        tRump is a flaming idiot.

        • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 22:54

I’m worried because the best candidate doesn’t always win.

          • oldfart May 8th, 2016 at 08:45

Been there done that, Carter VS Reagan
            Things would be much different.

      • robert May 7th, 2016 at 20:40

lets hear trump quote what bernie is saying about the gop.

    • robert May 7th, 2016 at 20:32

trump would be lucky to make it to VP

  10. Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 17:18

    I like Bernie less now.

I listened to him every Friday on Thom Hartmann’s show for years and was a huge fan.

But, the campaign has revealed an ugly side to him.

And it has confirmed my main concern about him — he doesn’t play well with others.

To be a successful president, you absolutely must be a pragmatist who knows how to compromise. I have not seen that in Bernie.

    • DogsRgoodpeople May 7th, 2016 at 17:48

on the contrary, the campaign has revealed his toughness , determination and loyalty to his supporters .

      • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 22:53

        >> on the contrary, the campaign has revealed his toughness , determination and loyalty to his supporters .

I was so happy when he pledged to run a positive campaign and then was very disappointed when he didn’t.

    • Obewon May 7th, 2016 at 18:09

12 M Dem voters agree, as do Registered Voter majorities. And that’s why HRC Landslide 54% defeats Donnie 41% -with 51% of Indys already onboard. http://www.pollingreport.com/wh16gen.htm

    • Comicus May 7th, 2016 at 21:32

We’ve had a “pragmatist who knows how to compromise” for eight years and it hasn’t worked out nearly as well as I initially hoped. Compromise with those who accept no compromise is an ineffective strategy.

      • Mensa Member May 7th, 2016 at 22:50

        >> We’ve had a “pragmatist who knows how to compromise” for eight years and it hasn’t worked out nearly as well as I initially hoped.

What were you hoping for that you didn’t get?

By almost every metric, Obama has been a very good president.

        • Comicus May 8th, 2016 at 11:04

REAL healthcare reform. We got a crappy recycled GOP designed healthcare plan instead.

          • OldLefty May 8th, 2016 at 11:32

We got the best that was possible, but the said the same thing about Social Security in it’s day.
What did you do when Pelosi’s House passed the public option?

          • Mensa Member May 8th, 2016 at 14:09

            >> REAL healthcare reform. We got a crappy recycled GOP designed healthcare plan instead.

Republicans would rather have burned the country down than give us single payer.

But, what Obama gave us, saved my life.

I’m serious. It’s not crappy for me.

Soon after Obamacare prohibited lifetime caps, I got a very expensive illness.

I’m recovered, now, but I’d be dead if Democrats had insisted on single payer and failed.

    • Kick Frenzy May 8th, 2016 at 02:54

Wait.. so, you’re saying you haven’t looked into his history as a Senator?

  11. bti May 7th, 2016 at 18:58

All I have to say is that these sites used to be where we could discus issues, it’s become hate filled, flagged, banned spewing. See ya, I don’t need this spew. I want rational discussions.

  12. oldfart May 8th, 2016 at 11:25

I’ll take Bernie’s word on this.
By golly, it sure would be nice to hear him beat up on the tRumpster for a while
instead of him having to defend his vote on guns…again…
