Immigrants seeking citizenship for fear of Trump

Fear is the key word, as that is what Donald Trump is running on.

On a recent Saturday morning in South Florida, 50-year-old Edgar Ospina stood in a long line of immigrants to take the first step to become an American.
Ospina has spent almost half his life in the U.S. after emigrating from his native Colombia, becoming eligible for citizenship in 1990. But with Donald Trump becoming a more likely presidential nominee by the day, Ospina decided to wait no more, rushing the paperwork required to become a citizen.

“Trump is dividing us as a country,” said Ospina, owner of a small flooring and kitchen remodeling company. “He’s so negative about immigrants. We’ve got to speak up.”

Nationwide, immigrants like Ospina are among tens of thousands applying for naturalization in a year when immigration has taken center stage in the presidential campaign, especially in the race for the Republican nomination.

Legal permanent residents are always welcome to become full citizens. These are not the ones that conservatives suggest need to be deported. Almost every conservative I know is in favor of legal immigration. In fact, if I were a legal immigrant or someone waiting to legally immigrate to the US I would be pissed at those that enter illegally. The illegals are taking time and resources away from those that wish to join us legally. I know this firsthand from watching my father-in-law have to fill out paperwork and follow up with phone calls for over 10 years to get his niece, nephew, brother and sister-in-law the right to come as legal immigrants.

I am curious for those that favor allowing the illegal immigrants the right to remain and become citizens – should we have any immigration laws at all? If you are ok with the people that sneak into the country are you in favor of just doing away with border security all together?
