Google: Computers to be a thing of the past

Google believes computers will eventually no longer exist as physical devices.

“Looking to the future, the next big step will be for the very concept of the ‘device’ to fade away,” Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai wrote Thursday in a letter to shareholders of parent Alphabet Inc. “Over time, the computer itself — whatever its form factor — will be an intelligent assistant helping you through your day.”

Instead of online information and activity happening mostly on the rectangular touch screens of smartphones, Pichai sees artificial intelligence powering increasingly formless computers. “We will move from mobile first to an AI first world,” he said.

    I agree.

    For example, consider the motor.

Long ago, you would buy a motor and hook things to it.

These days, motors are in all kinds of things and you never think about it.

It will be that way with computers. It kind of already is.

A smart phone is a computer. But who thinks of it as one?

Come back and talk after you try to create an extensive spreadsheet on your phone. Or created a Masterpiece of Art on your average 5″ screen. Or write that Great American Novel on your iPhone.

They also predicted that the desktop computer would eliminate big iron computers. Cray begs to differ.

That’s just a display problem. Think “Google glass” or “Minority Report“…
Regardless, even if it’s a virtual machine, the processors have to exist somewhere, so we’ll always be hitting the WalMart or Best Buy for whatever form it takes, even if it’s just a wristwatch-sized object with more computing power than 20 Alienware Area 51s.
I just hope they have it in black.

The advent of the horseless carriage didn’t eliminate horses. Nor will the need for more massive computing power than the average phone is apt to offer. Will the base of desktop computers decrease? Yes. Will the NSA do their surveillance on the world with the newest Razor Edge? Science employs Crays and their like to research folding of proteins, modelling the Big Bang, forecasting earthquakes, testing nuclear weapons. It’s going to be quite some time before phones have that kind of computing power. And chances are, the development of super-computers will continue too. Even now, some substitutes for super-computers are massive parallel arrays of current gen processors.
