Sanders’ tax returns: A bit more than $200,000 in 2014

It’s not peanuts, but not solid gold, either.

The senator from Vermont reported income of just more than $200,000 on his 2014 returns, according to the first few pages of his federal and Vermont filings, which were shared with The Washington Post back in June. On Friday, the couple is planning to release the rest of the returns, including attached schedules.

The vast majority of the couple’s income came from Sanders’s $174,000 Senate salary and Social Security benefits that both he and his wife, Jane, a former college president, receive.

Bernie must be the poorest US Senator.
    Just over $200,000?
That’s just one speech to Wall St by Hill.
No wonder why everyone wants to see her speech transcripts… must be great speeches.
Bill and Hill Co… greatest, most valuable speakers in history, show us your transcripts so we all can learn from them.

Has probably been asked and answered, but why, with a salary of $174,000, is he receiving Social Security benefits? His wife, a former college president, surely has a substantial pension and/or retirement benefit. Why is she also receiving Social Security benefits?

Social Security is not welfare. It’s something that people pay into & receive payments based on what they paid into it. If we turn it into another kind of welfare, cons (like you?) would then have an easier time taking it away from people (just like they have done with welfare).

Thank you for your kind and well thought out explanation. In the future, however, you might not to be so quick to cast aspersions. I am a life-long Democrat (since the days of JFK).

        • Um Cara April 16th, 2016 at 11:48

What does being a life long Democrat have to do with anything? And how was my comment anything but polite? What aspersions did I supposedly cast?

          • LenH April 16th, 2016 at 11:53

quote “cons (like you?) would then have an easier time taking it away from people” unquote.

I am not, nor have I ever been, a “con.” (Which, I am guessing, is shorthand for Conservative.)

            • Um Cara April 16th, 2016 at 12:29

Ah, I don’t use the word ‘conservative’ as an insult the way cons use the word ‘socialist’ as an insult. And the question mark was intended to show that it was, you know, a question.

You seemed to be suggesting means testing has a place in the discussion of social security, which of course is a con wet-dream, as a first step to killing it entirely.

So no aspersions cast, and you don’t consider yourself a con – question answered. Thank you.

Do either Bernie or Jane need to be receiving Social Security while Bernie is still working ?
Probably not but that money is theirs because they both paid into it. Is it fair that wealthy folks get SS benefits when clearly they don’t need them ? not really but they paid into it.
Bernie wants to expand SS for folks like me because he understands the dilemma that this reality is causing.
…Maybe because he knows and remembers what its like to be poor(er).

It could be fair for rich people to get SS benefits, but they don’t pay into them the same way others do.
As long as their SS payments are in line with how much they put into it, I don’t really see it being unfair.
It’s like putting money into a savings account then coming back for it later… it doesn’t really matter how much you have in checking, the money in savings is still yours.

Now, I’m not exactly sure how SS works, so it may be that the rich are getting more than they should when they collect it.
All I know is that the cap needs to be raised to more than $118,5k.
      Like… double it.
