The teacher was taken into custody after a video surfaced of her beating a black student.

According to KHOU, Mary Hastings,63, a teacher at Ozen High School near Beaumont was arrested for assault.

In the video — shot by another student, — Hastings can be seen repeatedly hitting the student as he sits at his desk, calling him an “idiot ass,” then mocking him afterwards when he asks, “Why’d you do that?”

I don’t understand the point a teacher goes to where she decides to hit a child. It seems to contradict everything we are when we decide to become teachers.

There is no excuse for hitting a child short of protecting your personal safety…and even then I’d question how you allowed a child to get you that angry.

I have worked with kids with behavior issues as well as kids in Special Ed who had taken a swipe at me, the only thing I needed to so was block the hit from reaching me. It does not seem that her safety was at risk in anyway. I am with you, I would question how you could ever become that angry where your anger takes control over you especially when this person is working in a classroom.

I have seen special ed teachers do some physical restraint on out-of-control kids. It was a bear hug thing with no pain and certainly no injury.

I don’t know what to think about it. Does it help the child? It seems like it escalates the situation.

No, restraint training does not escalate the situation. It calms the child down and gives them time to reflect on the situation and rethink their actions as well as reactions. The hug method is one tool, there are also chairs that have arm and leg restraints attached. Some of these kids have deep anger issues and need to be either medicated or put in a room alone until they calm down. It goes a lot deeper than this, but our main focus when a situation escalates and to make sure no other student is hurt.

Kids love to challenge authority, it’s how they grow and learn…we all did it.
I’ve never had a physical altercation with a student, probably because I’m a fairly large man. But I’ve have my share of challenges…it’s part of the job. If the kids are getting to you, it’s time to retire.

Well I am an average size female and they believe I am weaker than some I guess. If tried, I defend myself easily. The one major tool I have in my tool box is I know they underestimate me and I don’t have the need to prove myself until I need to.

I hope the main point is not lost in this, that no teacher should ever hit any student, regardless of the race of either. But this will probably turn into a racial incident. It may turn out that the teacher is a racist, but that would obscure the major issue.

Remember when conservatives made a push for fast-tracking war veterans into teaching?

PTSD and defiant kids. It’s hard to imagine a worse scenario. Classrooms for pedophiles on work-release, maybe?

It confirmed my belief that conservatives know nothing about schools.

I’m a teacher and I try to never touch a student in negative situation. I’m in a grade school, so incidental touching is common, especially with the little kids.

But, in upper grades, I just never touch students at all.

If a student absolutely won’t let me teach, I bring in support from administrative staff and we talk the student out of the room. (It rarely comes to that.) I don’t ever hit or restrain! That’s crazy.

She’s got issues that go beyond this kid. Time for her to get out of the classroom.

I used to get very irritated with some of my students, but it never entered my mind to hit them or use profanity because I knew that although they were teens, they were still children and that children can get on an adult’s nerves from time to time.
