Utah now requires anesthesia for abortions to protect fetus from pain
Whether a fetus feels pain is a subject of dispute.
The governor signed a bill Monday that makes Utah the first state to require doctors to give anesthesia to women having an abortion at 20 weeks of pregnancy or later.
The bill signed by Republican Gov. Gary Herbert is based on the disputed premise that a fetus can feel pain at that point.“The governor is adamantly pro-life. He believes in not only erring on the side of life, but also minimizing any pain that may be caused to an unborn child,” Herbert spokesman Jon Cox said.
Many doctors in Utah and across the country are concerned that the requirement could increase the health risks to women by giving them unnecessary heavy sedation in order to protect a fetus from pain that it may or may not feel.

It is a control and chipping away law, by forcing a women to have strong drugs you make it mandatory for someone qualified to moniter the womens breathing….this makes the procedure hundreds of dollars more expensive and may force clinics to have an attending doctor be at the clinic.

And it opens the door to requiring even more restrictive measures. Clinics would now have to meet ‘surgical center’ specs. etc.

Herbert attended Brigham Young University but did not graduate, he has a high school diploma. His is the owner of a real estate firm, Herbert and Associates Realtors. – Yet another completely unqualified GOP extremist trying to dictate the practice of medicine.
This fraudulent state law does not even consider the individual medical circumstances of pregnant women who may be adversely affected by the use of anesthesia. – To deliberately ignore valid medical and scientific evidence is both irresponsible and indefensible.
This idiotic piece of so-called legislation needs to be rescinded in the courts.

Unfortunately, it will take time to undo the damage done by the GOP gerrymandering and GOP voter restriction laws that put these religious extremists in a position to abuse legislative power. – Challenges in courts have worked to stop some of the TRAP laws yet it is a long process.
And these scumbags are willing to pursue enforcement of these absurd laws even to SCOTUS as with the Texas HB 2. – Just VOTE the GOP the he!! out of office!! – Good to see you as well. :)
