Coming: Self-cleaning laundry

You’ll just have to hang your clothes outside or stand under a light.

Researchers in Australia say they have found a way to alter fabric so that stains disappear after a few minutes of sun exposure.

They dip the fabric into a special solution that coats it with microscopic copper and silver particles. When hit with light, these particles jump to life and act a bit like bleach.

“They get excited, then they degrade organic matter,” one of the researchers, Rajesh Ramanathan, told CNNMoney on Wednesday. The tiny materials don’t eat into the cotton “because cotton is cellulose — is very tough.”

In the Navy, we had uniforms that were flame retardant. They were smelly and the coating was uncomfortable on my skin. I picture this being similar, I hope I am wrong.

We bought my husband a Carhart jacket for Christmas and it smelled so bad like chemicals it was awful. Our son tried it on to show me and then he stunk. I had to wash my hands after touching it! We wrapped in it a plastic bag inside the box so it didn’t stink up the house under the Christmas tree! I had to wash it before he wore it. It was pretty good and then he went out in the rain and now it smells the same way again, only much milder. That is just not good. I think you are right on what this idea would be like.

Exactly, but I never wore the uniforms more than once. They were stinky and uncomfortable, I figured I will burn in a fire before I wear flame retardant clothing again….as if it would really save me if I am on a ship that is on fire lol.

I think jumping in the water just might be your best bet.

That makes the most sense to me as well.

What if you live in a climate where sunshine is limited for a large portion of the year? I can put laundry in the wash machine at any time of day I like all year round and I don’t mind doing laundry anyway.
