Recreational marijuana generates $3.5m in tax revenue in first month

It’s good for the economy and, some would say, good for you.

Oregon’s marijuana tax receipts from January also surpassed the first-month tallies from recreational cannabis sales in Colorado and Washington state, the first two states to legalize general commercial distribution of pot for adults.

Colorado collected $2.9 million in taxes when recreational sales launched there in January 2014, a sum that included revenue from both recreational and medical cannabis purchases.

Washington’s recreational industry, which started slow with just 18 stores licensed to sell pot, yielded $1 million in tax revenue when it debuted in August 2014.

By comparison, Oregon’s 300 licensed cannabis retailers sold $13.9 million worth of marijuana in January, generating $3.48 million in taxes, according to a revenue report issued on Thursday.

Can we add the savings from no arrests, incarcerations, raids, or trials…???

But we must also subtract the societal and health costs of marijuana use.

And have a feeling that we are going give the marijuana industry the decades-long free ride America gave the tobacco industry.

We should be taxing them now for future health costs. Don’t force the victims to sue.

Exactly which societal and health costs would those be..??? And aren’t we already bearing those costs …??? The taxes collected in the legal venues only go to decreasing those costs, not adding to them.
Furthermore, comparing marijuana to tobacco in most contexts is a false equivalence, in the context you’ve chosen, it’s an argument from ignorance. (it’s pure conjecture)
The tobacco industry is directly responsible for 200k deaths a year, your improbable hypothesis imagines we will all of a sudden see hundreds of thousands dying because of pot use that aren’t dying now…unlikely.
The tobacco industry was sued because it sold a highly addictive carcinogen to an unknowing consumer…it engaged in malice when they conspired and worked to negate any science or data which confirmed those facts. The marijuana industry is the absolute antithesis of what big tobaccois

If it wasn’t for losing their own personal income on it, most Republicans would jump on this Money train.

Thanks to one of my friends who showed me a way where I was able to gather myself and making average of 56 d/h. So it can change your life as it has changed mine. Why not try this.
