If the GOP tries to block him, Obama can have at him at his side every day at the bully pulpit to beat up on the GOP. He is already in DC and it would just be so convenient. Strategically, if you want to shame the GOP, Garland is the best choice.
By avoiding the only downside (NOT putting up a nominee) all President Obama has to do now do exactly what you said. Mentioning all those approving things the Republicans have said about Judge Garland in the past wouldn’t hurt either..

this one is a great choice politically, and judicially…PBO outsmarted the gop once again…apparently it isn’t really that difficult to do…it is just that PBO has been taking advantage of the lack of quality of the people in the gop, and lack of ethics to hammer the gop…We will see what kind of operation the Koch boys have in store for this nation…they have threatened our democracy once too often…
He seems like a very nice, humble family man and good person. Although he would not have been my choice, he is well qualified and moderate. To think that he is going to be treated to the same obstruction that our President has is very disappointing and it will be another black eye received for no good reason.

President Obama was elected twice by the American people and has the constitutional duty to nominate and to which the Senate has also the constitutional duty to confirm.
Why does America have to suffer stupid fools like the Repukes?
I would like to see the presidential election be influenced by this display of stupidity by the Repukes.
His second amendment stance is what will give him trouble if the confirmation process continues.
Specifically his stance on the D.C. handgun ban, and requirements on home storage.
