The justices on Friday are effectively reversing an order by the federal appeals court in New Orleans that allowed Louisiana to begin enforcing its 2014 clinic regulation law even as it is being challenged in the courts.

The law requires doctors who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

The legal group representing the clinics says facilities in Baton Rouge and Bossier City already have had to stop providing abortions and a clinic in Shreveport would have to stop providing abortionssoon.

I have never been able to read legalese. I find that none of the breaking stories provided any indication as to how the justices voted.

A copy of the one page order is at the link below. If I am reading it correctly, only Justice Thomas disagreed. So, if that is correct, then at least the forced birth advocates can’t whine that this would never have happened if Justice Scalia was still alive.

If Thomas is the only one that dissented, then it may be a good sign – perhaps Scalia was swaying opinions within the Supreme Court, and without him, the other “right-leaning” justices are more likely to consider both sides, and more likely to actually support reason.
