…and the gene pool filter catches another one.

If these were the only type of gun accidents that happened, I would be a lifetime member of the NRA and I don’t even own a gun.

    • Larry Schmitt March 3rd, 2016 at 10:01

Unfortunately, most of this type of “accident” wound or kill kids whose only crime was being related to these idiots.

“Taking a selfie with his gun.” I’ve heard of a camera phone, but never a camera gun. Is that the new iGun 6s?

  4. Larry Schmitt March 3rd, 2016 at 10:02

Evidently this gun had no way of checking that there was no round in the chamber, or surely he would have done that. Right?

    • William March 4th, 2016 at 08:56

Many weapons have a “loaded chamber indicator”. The extractor might have a little line of red painted on it, so that if it’s positioned over a casing, it might give you an indication. Most weapons do not. This has been a problem since the transition from revolvers.

      • Larry Schmitt March 4th, 2016 at 09:06

I was just speaking generally. As a former cop, you would know a lot more about that than I would. But the lack of basic safety procedures is common with these gun fetishists. That’s what I was referring to.

        • William March 4th, 2016 at 09:21

Actually you were spot on. With revolvers it’s a lot easier to see if it’s loaded. With semi auto’s there is no glaring indicator that the weapon is ready to fire. Not really a problem for those who practice gun safety, but consider this. The cheapest car sold in this country gives you a visual and audible warning that your seatbelt isn’t fastened. I think we have a choice. Restricting weapons to those who have demonstrated their expertise in their use is unrealistic in this country. We have the technology to deploy a bag from a steering wheel in a microsecond to cushion your body in a collision, but we resist any and all efforts to upgrade gun safety beyond century old technology.

          • Larry Schmitt March 4th, 2016 at 09:26

And imagine what would have happened if any of the car makers had pushed back against any of the safety measures the way the NRA has done.

if he pointed the gun at his own head and pulled the trigger, it shirely was not an accident.

    • William March 3rd, 2016 at 12:09

It’s a very common accident with semi auto pistols. The shooter takes the magazine out of the gun and his senses (or lack of therein) and everything he has seen in movies and on TV tells him the weapon is unloaded. There is still one in the chamber. There is a safety device that disconnects the trigger from the firing mechanism when the magazine is removed. It was simple and inexpensive. It was popular with law enforcement. Many pistols were equipped with it. The NRA fought tooth and nail to keep it from being mandatory.

“The NRA fought tooth and nail to keep it from being mandatory.” why on earth would they want to fight that? that makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever.

        • Larry Schmitt March 3rd, 2016 at 14:54

Because that way, as their current members kill themselves off, they get to sell new guns to the new members. That doesn’t make any sense either, but we are talking about the NRA here.

        • Mike March 3rd, 2016 at 19:35

They claimed it would raise the cost of a weapon making it more expensive to exercise your god given 2nd amendment rights

        • William March 4th, 2016 at 01:36

Believe it or not, their members with their paranoid end times mentality argue that if you lose the magazine the weapon is useless.

          • whatthe46 March 4th, 2016 at 03:33

            seriously?

            • William March 4th, 2016 at 08:52

seriously. Year ago I got into a discussion with a gentleman on the subject. I told him I liked magazine disconnects because when entering the jail I could lock my weapon in the safe and not have to clear the chamber. I could simply drop the magazine. His reply was “yeah but in a combat situation I can still use my weapon if I lose my magazine”. That gentleman is a payroll clerk at a box factory.

              • Larry Schmitt March 4th, 2016 at 09:29

So he would have one round left, against how many for the boxes?

                • William March 4th, 2016 at 09:37

He was convinced that someday he would have to defend “Murica” from the commies streaming in from across the “pond”.

              • whatthe46 March 4th, 2016 at 09:32

                LOL

    • Mike March 3rd, 2016 at 19:32

I agree…while William’s explanation is certainly true, no one who owns, shoots, or handles, a semi automatic pistol or any other weapon, should ever point the muzzle at anything you don’t want to destroy.
Virtually all of these so-called accidents are avoidable and should instead be labeled misuse or having a wanton disregard for safety.

  6. Bunya March 3rd, 2016 at 13:42

I don’t own a firearm, but from everything I’ve seen on the news, I would know better than to point a gun at my head, even if I thought I was absolutely, positively KNEW there was no round in the chamber. It’s just common sense, no? Or am I being overly paranoid?

    • anothertoothpick March 3rd, 2016 at 13:49

      Gun “accidents” happen every day.

The cemetery is full of people that “KNOW” the limits of gun safety.

    • Larry Schmitt March 3rd, 2016 at 14:55

      Doesn’t seem paranoid to me.

    • Gina Bousquet March 3rd, 2016 at 16:34

      It’s a simple safety rule…

    • Mike March 3rd, 2016 at 19:23

That’s actually a “golden rule” thingy

  7. M.C.A. March 8th, 2016 at 00:55

People fall off balconies, cliff’s and break their necks falling backwards on chairs, so it’s not a gun story it’s a sad story for those that will miss him.
