Site update and open thread

Posted by | January 18, 2016 15:33 | Filed under: Forum

You’ll notice that now that when you go to a story you can see the original source in what is called an iframe.  It gives me a chance to get content up quickly without cutting and pasting from the original story, and you get to see it in its original form. It’s not working so well on mobile, although you can see the headlines. I’m working on a mobile solution, possibly by re-engineering the site to be responsive, so it looks the same on mobile as it does on desktop.

Once we’ve figured it all out, I want to move this to liberaland.com with alan.com on the homepage, but I want to make sure you’re with me on this, as I don’t want to keep making changes that aren’t accpetable to the community.

Thank you again for your feedback, being part of our community, and helping me focus on what we need to do to keep improving.

I liked this feature on ColmesFeed, and I like it here.
I only had one problem with it, autoplay videos, and I fixed that by changing the Shockwave settings in my browser.(Here’s how for Firefox and Chrome.)
    So I’m loving it.

    • Alan January 18th, 2016 at 16:38

Thanks. Autoplay is a function of the other sites. Thanks for letting other users know how to turn it off. I can’t stand it.

Yeah I love that, been using it for awhile.

Another loss to music: Glenn Frey of The Eagles is dead at 67.

I’m going to miss some news stories like the one about NBC linked from Breitbart. I just will not go there and give that crap clicks. Hope you won’t link to it very often. I’m looking somewhere else for the NBC story now.

    • Alan January 18th, 2016 at 17:53

I try to link to compatible sites unless it’s a story that I can’t get elsewhere or it’s the site that broke the story.

      • mistlesuede January 18th, 2016 at 18:13

I understand. But wasn’t this a story months ago anyway?

        • Alan January 18th, 2016 at 18:47

No, the NBC story broke today

          • Hirightnow January 18th, 2016 at 18:52

Do they get a click count when we open an article here with their site in the iframe?
Also, cookies.,,does my pc store them from their site when I read their site in a frame here?

            • mistlesuede January 18th, 2016 at 19:01

That is what I want to avoid.

              • Alan January 18th, 2016 at 20:01

If you stay within the iFrames you’re not leaving this site.

                • mistlesuede January 18th, 2016 at 21:05

I am no computer geek. That seems impossible to me. :)

                  • Alan January 19th, 2016 at 07:31

my error…I didn’t add the link. added now. If you read within the iFrames you’re on this site and not giving clicks to another site.

                    • mistlesuede January 19th, 2016 at 10:54

Okay. I’ll take your word for it on the clicks. ;)
                      Thank you.

                      That reminds me…
Was the chocolate french fry story supposed to have a link or an iframe or… was it supposed to just be that picture?

                    • Alan January 20th, 2016 at 11:21

link was missing, and I’ve just added it

                    • Kick Frenzy January 20th, 2016 at 12:00

                      Thanks!

            • Alan January 18th, 2016 at 20:01

No, they don’t get the clicks, we do. Only if you go to those sites to they get clicks. You’re safe!

          • mistlesuede January 18th, 2016 at 19:00

It is strange that no one else is covering it then, don’t you think? I can’t seem to find it either.

Oh yeah… I wanted to share a song with you guys!
(This would be the “open thread” portion of the show.)

Just a prime example of the musical abilities of humans:

Alan, the story on Palin’s son’s PTSD is hijacked by Time. You don’t get the frame, with comments at the bottom, it switches completely to the Time site.

Why do I have to verify my email almost every GDMF time I want to post!? It’s pissing me off!

Alan….I love the way you snuck in the new stuff…my old slippers are still comfortable…thanks…

    • Alan January 21st, 2016 at 13:36

What new stuff do you mean?

      • Buford2k11 January 21st, 2016 at 13:59

the block scrolling down of the articles…or was I thinking of something else? but I love the site, and I really am not adverse to new stuff either…

      • Hirightnow January 21st, 2016 at 17:28

This story has no link, and nothing in an iframe, Alan.

        • mistlesuede January 21st, 2016 at 17:39

I would say I’ve had this experience at least six times in the past week. Maybe more than that.

          • Hirightnow January 21st, 2016 at 17:49

            I blame Obama…

            • mistlesuede January 21st, 2016 at 18:06

              Oh, absolutely! LOL

          • Lara February 5th, 2016 at 11:11

Every link I’ve clicked on recently from your Twitter only loads a headline still.

            • mistlesuede February 5th, 2016 at 11:17

              Hi!
              I’m not on Twitter. :)

        • Alan January 21st, 2016 at 19:18

          Fixed.

      • mistlesuede January 21st, 2016 at 17:39

        Alan:
We’ve been experiencing a number of missing links to stories of late. Help?
        -mistlesuede

        • Alan January 21st, 2016 at 19:18

I’m aware and addressing the issue.

          • mistlesuede January 21st, 2016 at 22:22

Oh good. I’m glad to see my message got to you.
            Have a good evening.

Had no ideal that this song was 25 years old.
    Enjoy some Rockabilly bluegrass.
