Poll: Percentage Of Christians In U.S. Declining

Posted by | December 24, 2015 12:00 | Filed under: Religion

The percentage of Americans who define themselves as Christian is down 5% since 2008.

The Gallup poll also found that roughly 20 percent of Americans have no formal religion, which is up 5 percent from 2008.“The general trends in the data over this eight-year period are clear: As the percentage of American identifying with a Christian religion has decreased, the percentage with no formal religious identification has increased,” Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport wrote.

Five percent of American adults identify as a non-Christian religion, which has been constant since 2008.

It is about time President Obama started his conversion therapy, I was beginning to believe it was never going to happen.

  2. Buford2k11 December 24th, 2015 at 12:15

why is anyone surprised? just listen to the “christian leaders”…they only are preaching hate and fear…they are not what Christ was talking about…not a one of them…Mammon is their leader now…

I’d like to think it’s due to a triumph of rational thought but you’re probably closer to the truth. Trouble is they’ll probably just abandon one myth for another. Man creates god on an as-needed basis.

      • mea_mark December 24th, 2015 at 18:09

as-needed basis — like when man/woman wants/needs to control the masses with BS?

        • Roctuna December 24th, 2015 at 18:48

That’s certainly the most common need these days. Shows you how easily gods and organized religion can be corrupted. I think in ancient times there were other reasons as well.

  3. rg9rts December 24th, 2015 at 12:26

Who wants to be beholden to a vengeful god?? This is the price of selling hate

  4. David Ish December 24th, 2015 at 12:35

I live in Pittsburgh Pa. I have been to estimated 30 congregations. They they only see people as people as $$$. They are only right-wing. NO view different view than the part-time. Among them is Bellefeild Presbyterian Church and WORD-FM. Is it any wonder that people are “walking away” from Xtianity. Especially millennials.

    • David Ish December 24th, 2015 at 15:19

To extend my message: I hand delivered to Internet WORD-FM and twice to the church, I was arrest for stalking (items described by the cop as “Liberal propaganda”)

  5. fahvel December 24th, 2015 at 12:41

what an incredible piece of meaningless info.

  6. Dwendt44 December 24th, 2015 at 12:58

It happened to the followers of Odin, it happened to the followers of Zeus, and hundreds if not thousands of other gods and deities. Why is this no surprise? The imaginary gods fad over time, it’s a natural occurrence.

    • Larry Schmitt December 24th, 2015 at 13:24

But at least Odin got a day out of it, Wednesday (Woden/Odin’s Day).

      • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 24th, 2015 at 18:59

All of our English days of the week are named after ancient gods and goddesses.

        • Dwendt44 December 24th, 2015 at 21:19

And some of the months are named for several of the Roman emperors.

          • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 24th, 2015 at 21:33

Well, really only two of them.

            • Dwendt44 December 24th, 2015 at 22:27

              Two gods
              Two goddesses
              Two emperors.

January Named after Janus the god of beginnings and transitions.

February Named after the Latin Februum (purification ritual – Februa)

March Named for the Roman god Mars, the god of war.

April “opening” due to the flowers and trees blooming. Also the sacred month of Venus,Goddess of Love.

May Named for the Greek goddess Maia, goddess of fertitity

June Named for the Roman goddess Juno wife of Jupiter.

              July Named for Julius Caesar.

August Originally the sixth month, it was named Sextilis. Julius Ceasar renamed it for
              Augustus the first Roman emperor.

September the Latin seventh month ‘Septem’ Latin for seven.

October Originally the seventh month from the Latin ‘Octo’ for seven.

November Originally the ninth month from the Latin ‘novem’, meaning ‘nine’.

December Originally the tenth month from the Latin ‘decem’ for ‘ten’.

              • bpollen December 25th, 2015 at 01:42

I have one minor quibble – octo is Latin for 8, Septem is 7 as you pointed out just prior. Other than that, you were spot on.

  7. Larry Schmitt December 24th, 2015 at 13:20

That’s due to all the persecution of Christians and Obama recruiting Muslims from Syria.

  8. Red Eye Robot December 24th, 2015 at 16:58

If this keeps up in 100 years there will be no Christians in America. I wouldn’t count on it though.

    • tracey marie December 24th, 2015 at 17:47

even on christ mas eve you show yourself to be a faux xtian

    • Roctuna December 24th, 2015 at 17:57

Shows how little you know about atheism, the big bang, cosmology and dinosaurs. This post is nonsense like all your others. Merry Christmas BTW.

      • mea_mark December 24th, 2015 at 18:07

Statistical trends is not nonsense. It is info. What you take from it, may or not be non-sense, but info is info.

        • Roctuna December 24th, 2015 at 18:15

I was replying to RER. He never makes sense. I guess I mixed “post” and “comment” in my reply

          • mea_mark December 24th, 2015 at 18:17

That is what I thought after I wrote my comment and posted it. I had to edit it. Sometimes things aren’t so apparent on first reading.

          • allison1050 December 24th, 2015 at 20:16

Don’t worry I gottcha or should you and I both worry?? ;o)

        • Dwendt44 December 24th, 2015 at 18:37

And you can bet dead eye will take the nonsense from his posts.

    • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 24th, 2015 at 18:48

Atheism is the simple lack of belief in gods. It is none of that crap you posted.

    • William December 24th, 2015 at 18:50

      Poor Christians.

    • allison1050 December 24th, 2015 at 20:19

      Change that dial Red Eye.

    • Red Mann December 24th, 2015 at 21:25

Merry Christmas, Red-eye. Maybe Santa will leave some reality and rationality in your stocking, you really could use some.

    • bpollen December 25th, 2015 at 01:44

      Math is hard… So’s logic.

      That’s why you ignore both.

    • Mike December 25th, 2015 at 11:39

OK, so you have no idea what atheism is…and know even less about science…
      What else ya got…???

    • Obewon December 26th, 2015 at 20:04

The Pope say’s you’ll burn in Hell. But ‘Atheists Welcome In Heaven’-Pope Francis. http://www.alan.com/2015/12/26/pope-atheists-welcome-in-heaven/

CERN and ESA are proving 2+ universes collided spawning our infant universe 13.85 B years ago. Happy holidays scientists, scholars and all beings of the known ‘verses.

  10. Roctuna December 25th, 2015 at 14:08

If anything’s driving people away from the church, besides logic and reason, it’s the non-stop preaching from persecuted christians like this ass. They just can’t stop their self-righteous selves no matter how hard the rest of us tell ’em we don’t want to hear it.

RawStory is the most racist site on the net. The included a pic of a white person in handcuffs to mislead the readers about a cop who was arrested, who was nëgro.

      • arc99 December 25th, 2015 at 15:18

RawStory is not a racist site at all. That would be Breitbart.com

and what exactly is a negro?

It’s repub Christians that are driving folks away. They are not true Christians at all. They don’t follow the Prince of Peace. They don’t follow the Sermon on the Mount. They worship at the altar of hate, greed and money. Many Christian leaders sold their souls for repub votes going back 35+ years. It’s been downhill ever since. RWNJ repub Christians make a mockery out of the teachings of Jesus Christ. Disgusting.
