Reagan Daughter: Dad Would Be ‘Appalled’ At Today’s GOP

Posted by | December 22, 2015 12:44 | Filed under: Politics

Patti Davis says her father would be “appalled” by today’s Republican candidates. She spoke with Michelangelo Signorile.

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)

In an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress, Davis said her father, who was shot in an attempted assassination by John Hinckley Jr. in 1981, would not be able to imagine today’s gun violence. Davis also noted that in stark contrast to current GOP presidential candidates and most Republican leaders, her mother, Nancy Reagan, was “very happy” about the Supreme Court’s historic decision on marriage equality…

Responding to a question about Sen. Ted Cruz often positively invoking her father’s name on the campaign trail and during debates, Davis said, “It may be this week he’s doing it more than the others. But they all kind of do it. But yet, they are so not like him. My father would be so appalled at what’s going on. He would be so appalled at these candidates. I don’t think he would be a Republican. And if another Ronald Reagan came along right now, I don’t think the Republican Party would accept him.”

      That sounds right!

Most decent people are appalled by what passes for the gopee

Another Ronald Reagan. You mean another B movie actor who confuses his roles with real life?

      Well, I…. (zzzzz!)

    63 years old…damn!

  6. Bunya December 22nd, 2015 at 14:38

Actually, I think the GOP would approve. After all, Reagan did more to destroy this country than anybody else (well, it’s a tie between him and Dubya).

    • terfull December 23rd, 2015 at 00:49

Yeah, ending Carter’s stagflation, winning the Cold War, gaining world-wide respect…terrible for people like you.

      • Bunya December 23rd, 2015 at 10:45

…tanking the economy, giving huge tax breaks to the uber-rich under the guise of “trickle down economics”, the Iran-Contra scandal, destroying the middle class. Yep, Reagan bequeathed nothing to the country but debt and crime without consequence … great for people like you.

        • Red Mann December 23rd, 2015 at 11:49

Not to mention his union busting.

          • Bunya December 23rd, 2015 at 12:18

Thanks. I forgot about that one.

Most moderate GOP members are appalled at todays Republican Party

  8. AuntySocial December 22nd, 2015 at 17:05

Since he is the one who enabled them, I seriously doubt it. He is the one who started the demise of the middle class. All of the replublican party’s evil doings can be traced back to Reagan.

    • Bodeanicus December 22nd, 2015 at 21:20

Today’s Republican party are fascists. Not the imaginary Nazi/Russian “fascists” Beck and his ilk constantly invoke, but true textbook fascists. They literally believe in government owned and run by corporations and ultra rich cabals.

    • Richard Banville December 23rd, 2015 at 00:05

True, but I think even HE might be shocked at how nasty and stupid the RepubliKKKans have become.

  10. Tim Coolio December 22nd, 2015 at 20:56

Reagan raised taxes 16 times, sold arms to the Contras
and the Taliban, and had 136 administration officials
accused, indicted or convicted, had 200+ Marines killed
on his watch in a terrorist attack, and 20,000 Americans
died of Aids before he even mentioned it, but the Cons
still want to put him on Mt. Rushmore, also
the reagan campaign cheated, they made a deal to
trade weapons to Iran in return for Iran KEEPING
the hostages until after the election! and Nixon
did the same thing to LBJ with the Vietnam peace
    talks.

    • The Original Just Me December 22nd, 2015 at 21:59

Truth, Facts, and Honesty, Do you think ANY of the Republicans care about any of those ?

      • maggie December 22nd, 2015 at 23:11

this is the easiest test I have ever taken …answer; NO. I aced it. ;)

        • The Original Just Me December 22nd, 2015 at 23:22

Now don’t go getting too handy with that answer No. Some day I might want to ask you out on a date. Smiles :+)

    • Gregory Spencer Hill January 14th, 2016 at 10:34

That is a bit overboard, Tim. Every president has had rogues within his administration. The tax increases were supported by Democrats in Congress, and were the right thing to do at the time. They show that Reagan was not an anti-government ideologue and has little in common with Ted Cruz and other modern Teapublicans.

Reagan also persuaded Mikhail Gorbachev to lower the iron curtain, presided over a major economic recovery, worked quite well with Democrats in Congress (especially Tip O’Neill), did a lot to shore up the financing of Social Security, and generally helped Americans to retain their confidence in the American dream.

  11. The Original Just Me December 22nd, 2015 at 21:56

I never much cared for Ronny the Actor, but I DO agree with his daughter.

  12. maggie December 22nd, 2015 at 23:07

I agree with patty’s statement about her dad….her dad was considered to the right of center for his time…but not tea party extreme….he would be considered a moderate today….part of the “establishment”.

  13. William December 22nd, 2015 at 23:43

Todays GOP would label Dutch as a left wing radical.

    • Peter J Shepherd December 23rd, 2015 at 07:21

The law enforcement officers I know encourage law abiding citizens to carry.. concealed carry and open carry.

      • William December 23rd, 2015 at 08:38

The law enforcement personnel that I know (Me being one of them). Do not tell citizens to carry weapons. In fact cops are taught to insulate themselves from civil liability. Telling someone to carry a gun is exactly the type of activity that can result in the “The cop told me to” nightmare we steer clear of.
You pulled your statement right out of your ass.

        • Alisi December 23rd, 2015 at 09:39

          Yeah he did.

          250 comment troll. Ignore.

        • Peter J Shepherd December 24th, 2015 at 04:19

You obviously have not talked to any of the law enforcement officers I know here in Texas, sir. They know that they can’t be everyplace at the same time, and all too often arrive AFTER the crime occurs, too late to prevent the robbery, burglary… or murder, and, therefore encourage people to defend themselves – which is one of the purposes of the Second Amendment.

          • bpollen December 24th, 2015 at 04:48

And where is robbery, burglary, or murder mentioned in the one sentence of the 2nd Amendment?

            • Peter J Shepherd December 26th, 2015 at 03:29

The 2nd Amendment gives good law-abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms to stop bad people from doing bad things. You may have heard the saying, “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.”

              • bpollen December 26th, 2015 at 04:08

In other words, you can’t show where robbery, burglary, or murder are listed in the 2nd Amendment. Or, to put it another way, you are basing your opinion of the 2nd Amendment solely on YOUR interpretation of it, and not the actual text of the Amendment. You are free, thanks to the preceding Amendment, to present your opinion, but that is all it is.

And aphorisms are nice, but they don’t really influence the Constitution.

              • Robert Kennedy December 26th, 2015 at 14:06

And that’s because those good people have allowed the bad guys to get guns by fighting common sense laws.

          • William December 24th, 2015 at 08:55

Texas? Hey I thought you guys were all being held in Wal-Marts after the Jade Helm invasion.
I’m going to go ahead and stand by my statement because of my actual 16 years of law enforcement, and dismiss your “statement” (AKA .NRA armed citizen bumper stickers) because,
            You’re from Texas. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/62884780e525a4ed36ad7c5634c979101339dfb3f394e9ec26d870b41858ef92.jpg

            • Peter J Shepherd December 24th, 2015 at 11:37

Yes.. I live in Texas, where we still believe in such old-fashioned concepts as God, the Bible, The Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States of America, and Apple Pie, including, but not limited to the 2nd Amendment.

              • William December 24th, 2015 at 18:45

              • bpollen December 26th, 2015 at 04:13

People in every state believe in such old-fashioned concepts as Gawd, Allah, the Bible, the Qur’an, the Declaration, and the Constitution. That proves nothing. Especially since we are a secular nation, and not an outpost of Christendom. As is evidenced by that Constitution you claim to believe in. Gawd is not mentioned in the Constitution, nor is Jebus.

              • Robert Kennedy December 26th, 2015 at 14:04

You do realize that unless you are a member of the National Guard you have no constitutional right to have a gun, right? And if you people believe in God why do you pass so many anti Godly laws? And how does the bible, which contradicts itself thousands of times apply to the law? Just admit it, Texas is a hell hole.

          • Robert Kennedy December 26th, 2015 at 14:13

The only purpose of the second amendment was to protect the government from insurrection without the expense of a standing army and had absolutely nothing to do with your “right to defend yourself.” And considering the sorry state of the justice system in Texas, I’d say your police are well below average.

      • Robert Kennedy December 26th, 2015 at 00:31

The LEOs I know think you’re stupid. Guns held by private citizens are not a friend to police and are a constant danger they must be aware of and constantly be on guard against. You ammosexuals are a large part of the stress they have to deal with, which makes us all less safe.

        • Peter J Shepherd December 26th, 2015 at 03:34

You must not live in Texas. The LEO’s you know must not give a rip out the Constitution, which they are sworn to uphold. I have been robbed twice where I work. The LEO’s that came in response assured me that if I had been armed, and if I had stopped the robbers, the law would have been 100% on my side. The police cannot be everywhere at once.

  14. Boltorama December 22nd, 2015 at 23:57

He would? It doesn’t look like the GOP has drifted too far from what Reagan did when he was President.

I laugh thinking of the look on your face when Fox “News” called Ohio for Obama in 2012, as he cruised to another easy win. The fact is your clown candidates have won exactly one presidential popular vote since 1988. Face the facts – America just ain’t that into you.

Rick Perry is closest to Ronald Reagan, and the national Republican Party did not accept him.

    • Foster Mac December 24th, 2015 at 03:52

Rick Perry? Realy? You’re trotting out Rick Perry as a viable candidate? Wow. I’m from crazy=assed Texas. Trust me, Rick Perry was NOT qualified to be president. Did ya’ll see this? This guy invoked the name of Rick Perry . . . .(must of been on thet good ‘medical’ marijuana) . . .

      • allison1050 December 24th, 2015 at 06:00

Nor was St. Ronnie Foster for that matter, how old are you?

        • Foster Mac January 14th, 2016 at 00:13

          59.

          • allison1050 January 14th, 2016 at 05:56

59..I have some memories of being that age. Peter J Shepherd wasn’t saying that Rick Perry was viable as a candidate but was suggesting that he was as viable as St. Ronnie was…which indeed he was not. I was in high school (in Calfornia as a matter of fact) when Ronnie was gov so as you can see I go back quite a way. He wasn’t viable to be effin gov. either. To then later become the prez Foster the guy had dementia for crying out loud! He was constantly confusing characters from his grade XYZ movies and talking about them as if they were living people. He would refer to them sending him letters.
Being 59 today would explain why you don’t know about St. Ronnie’s mental illness but in better times as gov. he wasn’t qualified for that either and R. Perry is in the same line almost to the point of being St. Ronnie’s cosmic twin…except Perry is an idiot minus the dementia.

            • Foster Mac January 28th, 2016 at 04:44

Huh? I was 18 when he left office in California. 24 when he became President. 10 when he started the governorship in Cali (and when he embraced that crazy-assed Barry Goldwater. What did I miss? Not so sure why you didnt think I was aware of his illnesses (or shortcomings) but, whatever. The reality is that the only Republican of the last 40 years that had qualifications was Richard Nixon, and he wasnt sharp enough to pull off what should have been a third rate burglary. Of course, like ALL Republican candidates, they feel a need to be ‘paper’ son-of-a-bitches. Meaning of course, that they can never physically carry out what they continually threaten (you know, “kick ass”, “carpet bomb”, etc). Nixon ‘talked’ like an ass kicker, Reagan ‘talked’ like an ass kicker, Bush, Trump, Christie and so on, and so on. As a consequence, I have NO respect or confidence in ANY Republican, Reagan included. In one of the great cruel ironies of our (his) lifetime, he was President for 2 terms and before he left this world he didn’t even know it. So not only was he wasted on us, his time was wasted on himself.

              • allison1050 January 28th, 2016 at 08:24

That’s what I’m talking about Foster, you’re a million years younger than I am. So yes, I remember Ronnie as the gov of my home state and so therefore was in my 30’s when he became the confused pres. None of those “ass kickers” ever kicked anything other than a football, maybe. I kicked more ass than any of them dreamed if doing. He didn’t know the world when he was in it as a matter of fact.
Your still a younin’ to me. Hope to see you on these threads again Foster. I come and go on this thread so maybe we’ll bump into each other again.

How many right-wingeres would love to have Reagan and his policies back in office?

How many left-wingers want Bill Clinton and his policies (DOMA, Don;t ask don’t tell, deregulations, welfare reform, tough on crime, etc.) back in office.

Reagan’s policies are closer to Obama’s than to the modern right-wing extremists of today’s GOP.

As for Clinton, we understand the historical and political context that he had to deal with. This is a new century. Unlike conservatives, liberals are capable of adapting to changing times.

I would like to hear what reagan polices you believe the right wouldn’t embrace today?

To be fair, I listed Clinton policies that after 16 years the left no longer believes in.

Several Reagan policies no longer embraced by 21st century GOP include Reagan’s Executive amnesty for undocumented immigrants, raising taxes 14 times, gun control, tripling the deficit, growing the public debt +189% 1981-1988, selling weapons to Iran, the Contra’s in violation of congress and U.S. Law, etc.

Just for one, amnesty. But for sure his asinine economic policies are at the base of everything wrong with the country, economically. He was a terrible president, but he was capable of SOMETIMES correcting his errors.
