Jeb! Can’t Explain How Refugees Would Prove They’re Christian

Posted by | November 18, 2015 14:03 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Jeb Bush has given inconsistent answers to how he’d handle the refugee crisis. After saying only Christian refugees should be admitted, he he couldn’t explain how he’d vet them.

“At a minimum we ought to be bringing in people that have — orphans or people that clearly aren’t going to be terrorists. Or Christians,” Bush told reporters in South Carolina, according toABC News. “There are no Christian terrorists in the Middle East, they’re persecuted.”

One reporter questioned what his focus on Christian refugees would “actually look like.”

“Well, you’re a Christian, I mean, you can prove you’re a Christian,” Bush responded.

“How?” a reporter interjected.

“I think you can prove it,” Bush shrugged. “If you can’t prove it, you know, you err on the side of caution.”

It’s not only morally reprehensible, it’s constitutionally illegal. He spoke off the cuff, and it was very telling.

    • tracey marie November 18th, 2015 at 15:13

All those on the right say the same thing.

    • rg9rts November 18th, 2015 at 16:22

      • Suzanne McFly November 18th, 2015 at 16:29

Yeah, he loved shredding the Constitution when he deemed appropriate.

    • granpa.usthai November 18th, 2015 at 18:00

-and now I’m beginning to understand the GOP TRUMP strategy:

makes most of US look upon and speak kinder of the other GOP candidates.

    • Larry Schmitt November 18th, 2015 at 21:27

His cuffs are getting a little frayed lately.

    • BrooklynNow November 19th, 2015 at 00:39

Wrong. US Constitution is not the basis of international refugee policy; it is Obama who was reprehensible here. 1951 UN Convention in fact does give priority to groups fleeing religious persecution over people simply fleeing war violence, which is what the majority of Muslim so-called “refugees are doing. Muslims once they reach Turkey or other MidEast country can be out of harm’s way. Christians cannot because they are frequently targeted for violence there too including in Turkey simply because of their religion. In the past the government prioritze Jews over non-Jews leaving ex- Soviet countries, or non-Muslims from South Sudan, Muslims from Bosnia over other Yugoslavs for refugee status because they believed they were targeted. To not give MidEast Christians priority to go to the West is immoral since whole Christian communities face extinction i.e. cultural genocide. Muslims as a group do not face extinction in any part of the Middle East.

      • fahvel November 19th, 2015 at 03:31

you must be from the new sanitized Brooklyn ’cause no brooklyn kid would ever say moronic things like you have just said.

      • Carla Akins November 19th, 2015 at 03:56

Huh, I hadn’t realized any adopted UN policy trumped any actual US law. But technically the Constitution doesn’t directly address the immigration issue but it’s clear from it’s intent that it was never intended to require the practice of a specific religion in order to be an American.

The Convention is 1951 does give priority to those seeking asylum (although, different from refugee) if they’re seeking harbor for religious persecution status – however we’re not talking abut offering a priority status but a requirement of practicing a specific religion in order to be accepted.

It’s not the same thing, and current refugees are escaping a war-torn country their religious status is only a part of a much larger consideration and far more important to the talking heads on Fox news than with the State dept. Petitioning refugees are considered regardless of their religious practices. Obama does not pick through applications and accept only Muslims, in fact, religion is not even addressed in the initial paperwork.

And just a point in fact, the 1951 convention was amended in 1967, 1984, and 2002 but is still a UN guideline not US law.

  2. Robert Smithson November 18th, 2015 at 14:07

How does one prove they are a Christian? It’s simple, you go to the Christian Church’s in the area and have their religious leaders verify that they are indeed members of their Church. The one thing you don’t do is to rely on the UN for any type of verification.

    • majii November 18th, 2015 at 14:17

When refugees apply for asylum in the U.S., the UN is not involved. The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security handle the verification process. The UN is an international organization and would have nothing to do with the decision as to whether a country does/does not accept a refugee. It does not have jurisdiction in this matter. It can urge countries to accept refugees, but it cannot order them to.

      • lynchie November 18th, 2015 at 15:51

Wrong. Potential refugees first apply for refugee status through the United
Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the international body in
charge of protecting and assisting refugees.
The UNHCR essentially decides who merits refugee status based on the
parameters laid out in the 1951 Refugee Convention, which states that a
refugee is someone who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted
for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular
social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his
nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to
avail himself of the protection of that country.”

After the UNHCR refers a refugee applicant to the United States, the
application is processed by a federally funded Resettlement Support
Center, which gathers information about the candidate to prepare for an
intensive screening process, which includes an interview, a medical
evaluation and an interagency security screening process aimed at
ensuring the refugee does not pose a threat to the United States.
The average processing time for refugee applications is 18 to 24 months,
but Syrian applications can take significantly longer because of
security concerns and difficulties in verifying their information.

        http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/16/politics/syrian-refugees-u-s-applicants-explainer/index.html

The U.S. and its various screening groups FBI, Homeland Security then do their own vetting. Keep in mind those refugees now being considered have been in the process for approximately 2 years.
You are right they can’t force anyone to take any of the refugees

        • granpa.usthai November 18th, 2015 at 17:57

then why not just narrow it down to my solution?

          show the little fishie?

no reason for those of other religious faiths to wear them – unless maybe they’re a terrorist attempting to enter in the US with republican supplied US firearms – then all you gotta do is ask them what the little fishie means

(ALLAH forbids them to claim another religious faith)

    • tracey marie November 18th, 2015 at 15:13

      Uh huh.

    • rg9rts November 18th, 2015 at 16:22

And your city is bombed to shait..now what Einstein

      • granpa.usthai November 18th, 2015 at 18:13

just because someone blows up a city doesn’t necessarily mean they are terrorist.

It could be something as simple as a ‘bad DU’ day – or someone who gets a Russian made Czar bomb (clearly within their 2nd Amendment Rights -that shall not be infringed) but doesn’t understand the instructions ’cause they can’t read Russian – but take a ‘WAG’ (thanks to burqa) only to find out they’re more stupid than the Russians who built the damn thing?

        POOF!

        -oopsie.

    • granpa.usthai November 18th, 2015 at 18:06

      but-but-but-

why couldn’t you go to a Muslim Center in the area and have their religious leaders verify that they are indeed members in good standing with the Muslims in the community?

It’s just as EASIER (most times they’ll offer you food and drink) – AND –
you wouldn’t need any UN verification.

      ?

Your ‘Dumbest post ever’ burned your pants right off!!!
      1) Is Barack Hussein Obama a practicing Christian?
      A) BHO44 Proved it! But did you (R)acists believe it? Nope!

Furthermore 2/3 of today’s GOP still don’t even think 1961 born POTUS BHO44 is an American Citizen, or know Hawaii has been a state since 1959!

    • fahvel November 19th, 2015 at 03:29

I know Obe said it below but he’s right. Stupidest comment you’ve made in a while but not as sick as many others.

    • Larry Schmitt November 19th, 2015 at 04:15

I didn’t realize official, written, recorded membership in a church was required for someone to consider himself a christian. Do they ask for your membership card before you can attend services? Do you have to get your hand stamped so you can get back in?

Christians in the middle east were head scarves as well as the muslim and jewish women…is there a blood test or certain look that he is hinting at that tells us what religion they worship?

oh heck, trace, everybody but EVERYBODY knows the ‘secret symbol’ for christians is a little fishie.

WTH would a Muslim or Jew be wearing a little fishie icon?

simple: show the little fishie -or- in my case, a bit more cleavage will be just as good!

      • Dwendt44 November 19th, 2015 at 00:25

Especially since tattoos are forbidden by the bible.

  6. granpa.usthai November 18th, 2015 at 17:41

    • Dwendt44 November 19th, 2015 at 00:24

      Christian terrorists are OK, right?

  7. Chris November 18th, 2015 at 19:48

All three Democratic candidates can give reasoned arguments about how it is incumbent on a moral America to offer help to the refugees.

And then the Republicans offer up crap like Jeb! just did? I just cannot picture how any intelligent American is attracted to this man as a candidate.

  8. amersham46 November 18th, 2015 at 19:51

But Jeb can’t explain a lot of things

  9. bpollen November 18th, 2015 at 20:04

I got pulled over once for speeding. The car I was driving had the Ichthys on it when I bought it. The cop asks me if I am a Christian because he hates to give tickets to Christians. I said, not too surprisingly “Why, yes I am, officer. Thanks for asking.”

    • Bunya November 18th, 2015 at 20:21

“…and coincidentally I was on my way to church when you stopped me!”

Once again constitutionally illiterate Jeb! proves why Babs said of Jeb’16’s potential run in 2013 “I think we’ve had enough Bush’s”-Mother Bush knows GWB43 is the smarter arbusto (shrub.)

  13. William November 18th, 2015 at 21:42

“Well, you’re a Christian, I mean, you can prove you’re a Christian,” Bush responded.
    Whew.
    I’m glad that’s settled.

    • granpa.usthai November 19th, 2015 at 01:14

at least we can take some comfort in knowing that Timothy is way up in heaven – high above where the boiling clouds of debris soot and flecks of human baby flesh ended – otherwise, he’s in a place where most not-a-christian winds up!

      • William November 19th, 2015 at 01:21

On another interesting note. CNN (I believe) just took a giant dump on Raphael Cruz.
They pointed out to him that his own father was a refugee.
Not only a refugee, but one who fought alongside a commie.
        cool eh?

  14. fahvel November 19th, 2015 at 03:25
